Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Echo of the Lake: And Other Poems It is not my desire, in publishing these productions, to seek recognition as a poet, but to portray, to the best of my ability, for the perusal of a few personal friends, some of the sentiments and emotions that have agitated the mind of one in whom they have kindly expressed interest. I lay no claim to startling originality, but have endeavored to avoid being stilted or prosaic. I publish my verses, such as they are, trusting, through the indulgence of my friends and the indifference of the public, they may be accepted as they are intended. Book excerpt: "Echoes on the Lake: The Common Loon in Poetry" invites readers on a captivating journey into the heart of nature's symphony as it unfolds on serene lakeshores. This exquisite collection of poetry is a celebration of the haunting and evocative presence of the Common Loon, a bird that graces the tranquil waters with its distinctive calls and graceful movements. In this anthology, poets skillfully weave words to capture the essence of the Common Loon's mystique, exploring themes of solitude, reflection, and the interconnectedness of life within the peaceful realm of lakeside landscapes. The loon's haunting calls resonate through the verses, echoing across the water like a poetic sonnet to the wilderness. Through the lens of these poems, readers will embark on a sensory voyage, immersing themselves in the sights and sounds of lakeside environments. The poems paint vivid portraits of the loon's elegant dives, its sleek silhouette gliding across mirrored waters, and the ethereal echoes that linger in the stillness of dawn. "Echoes on the Lake" not only pays homage to the Common Loon but also serves as a testament to the enduring power of poetry to capture the beauty and significance of the natural world. Whether one is an avid nature enthusiast or a poetry lover, this collection invites all to experience the magic of the lakeside, where the Common Loon takes center stage, enchanting hearts and inspiring verses that ripple like echoes across the water.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long-established association of Romanticism with youth has resulted in the early poems of the Lake Poets being considered the most significant. Tim Fulford challenges the tendency to overlook the later poetry of no longer youthful poets, which has had the result of neglecting the Wordsworth, Coleridge and Southey of the 1820s and leaving unexamined the three poets' rise to popularity in the 1830s and 1840s. He offers a fresh perspective on the Lake Poets as professional writers shaping long careers through new work, as well as the republication of their early successes. The theme of lateness, incorporating revision, recollection, age and loss, is examined within contexts including gender, visual art, and the commercial book market. Fulford investigates the Lake Poets' later poems for their impact now, while also exploring their historical effects in their own time and counting the costs of their omission from Romanticism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822) was one of the major Romantic poets, and wrote what is critically recognised as some of the finest lyric poetry in the English language. This is the third volume of the five-volume The Poems of Shelley, which presents all of Shelley’s poems in chronological order and with full annotation. Date and circumstances of composition are provided for each poem and all manuscript and printed sources relevant to establishing an authoritative text are freshly examined and assessed. Headnotes and footnotes furnish the personal, literary, historical and scientific information necessary to an informed reading of Shelley’s varied and allusive verse. Most of the poems in the present volume were composed between autumn 1819 and autumn 1820. The poems written in response to the political crisis in England following the ‘Peterloo’ massacre in August 1819 feature largely, among them The Mask of Anarchy and 'An Ode (Arise, arise, arise!)'. The popular songs, which Shelley intended to gather into a volume to inspire reformers from the labouring classes, several accompanied by significantly new textual material recovered from draft manuscripts, are included, as are the important political works 'Ode to Liberty', 'Ode to Naples' and Oedipus Tyrannus, Shelley's burlesque Greek tragedy on the Queen Caroline affair. Other major poems featured include 'The Sensitive-Plant', 'Ode to the West Wind', 'Letter to Maria Gisborne', an exuberant translation from the ancient Greek of the Homeric 'Hymn to Mercury', and the brilliantly inventive 'The Witch of Atlas'. In addition to accompanying commentaries, there are extensive bibliographies, a chronology of Shelley’s life, and indexes to titles and first lines. Leigh Hunt's informative Preface of 1832 to The Mask of Anarchy is also included as an Appendix. The volumes of The Poems of Shelley form the most comprehensive edition of Shelley's poetry available to students and scholars.
