In Canada, issues concerning repatriation and trade of material culture, heritage site protection, treatment of ancestral remains, and control over intangible heritage are governed by a complex legal and policy environment. This volume looks at the key features of Canadian, US, and international law influencing indigenous cultural heritage in Canada. Legal and extralegal avenues for reform are examined and opportunities and limits of existing frameworks are discussed. Is a radical shift in legal and political relations necessary for First Nations concerns to be meaningfully addressed?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jack Shadbolt was inspired in his formative years by his contact with Emily Carr and with her brooding works portraying the remnants of Indian villages against the overwhelming wilderness. He made sketches of Indian artefacts and the Cowichan Reserve in the 1930s, but it was only after World War II that elements of Indian art began to show up in his style. Marjorie Halpin finds in the changes in the way Indian forms occur in Shadbolt's paintings an appropriate expression of the changing attitudes of British Columbians to Native society and the political will the Native people now manifest. The place of Indian motifs in Shadbolt's painting can be broadly correlated with the cultural quickening of Indian society in recent years. They reveal his emotional sympathy with Kwagiutl, Haida, and Tlingit forms and his deep response to the Indians' spiritual and historic presence in the British Columbia environment.

Book excerpt: This book examines the relationship between art and tourism through the study of the material culture of tourism: tourist art and souvenirs. It thoroughly examines how to categorise the material culture of tourism within the discourses of contemporary art and cultural anthropology, and demonstrates that tourist art is a unique expression of place and genuine artistic style. The first investigation to consider the activity of souvenirs from both indigenous and settler tourist sites, it brings a unique addition to the existing, dated, research in the area. Working initially from Graburn’s definition of tourist art, as the art of one culture made specifically for the consumption of another, Tourism Art and Souvenirs sheds light on important aspects of the souvenir that have not been widely discussed. The most recent research is used to consider how the souvenir is designed and consumed, consumer expectations and influence on the character of the souvenir, how the souvenir maker is consumed by the tradition of heritage and how products become successful as souvenirs. The title also investigates the language involved in the representation of place and the recording of experience through the souvenir, developing a method that expresses the descriptive data of individual souvenir artefacts graphically so the patterns of language may be analysed. Enhancing the understanding of material culture in tourism and therefore adding to future tourism development this volume will be of interest to upper level students, researchers and academics in tourism, culture, heritage and sustainability.

Book excerpt: Native American Mythology began long before the European settlers arrived on North American soil. Contrary to popular beliefs, there is more to Native American Folklore than stories of buffalo hunts, teepee living and animal stories. Hundreds of tribes throughout North American created a huge mythological system that has rivaled that of the Greeks. Since the beginning of time every civilization has presented its own collection of strange tales and folklore. The Native American Indians are no different. Many of their stories included giants, hideous creatures, ghosts, beings from the spirit world, witches and many others. These creatures have haunted various corners of North America for thousands of years. The stories have been handed down from generation to generation. Some stories are amusing, while others are meant to be a terrifying lesson in life and contain eerie details and gruesome facts that will make your skin crawl. The stories collected in this book represent some of the best to be found. Many are about ghosts and their interaction with the living, some evil in nature while others appear quite normal. They teach a lesson that the dead don't automatically become ghosts. Many of the stories give a brief hint to an afterlife. While some ghosts go about their everyday lives in spirit form, and others attempt to come back from the other side. Some come back for revenge on the living.

This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuing the series The Best Native American Myths, Legends, and Folklore, Volume 3 offers an enjoyable look into the history of the Native American Indian. Before the time of books, computers, tablets and recording devices, the history of many cultures was passed down, from person to person, by word of mouth. The rich histories of so many people were told in songs, chants, poems and stories. This was and still is the way of Native American tribes. Each in its own way enriching their stories with their own experiences. By reliving these stories and songs, we have the opportunity to bring life back to the ancient spirits that created them. We have a chance to walk with the spirits of the past. Being there were so many different tribes with countless beliefs and customs, the only way to understand their ways is through understanding their stories. In this book I have endeavored to show a wide landscape of different tribes and hopefully present a true look at their beliefs. Among the stories included in this collection are: The Alligator and The Hunter, Mistakes of Old Man, The Badger and the Bear, The Bird Tribes, The Spider Woman and the Twins, The Woman and Her Bear, Creation Story, Yaponcha - The Wind God, How Fire Came To the Six Nations, The Origin of the Prairie Rose, The Bird Whose Wings Made the Wind, A Widow's Revenge, The Story of a Poor Man, Heavy Collar and the Ghost Woman, Bluejay Finds a Wife, The Medicine Grizzly Bear, A Little Brave and the Medicine Woman, The Man Who Was Afraid of Nothing, The Simpleton's Wisdom, Crossing the Red Sea, Wakiash and the First Totem Pole, and many more.

Book excerpt: This introduction to the art of tribal peoples of North America, Africa, and the South Pacific does not briefly cover the hundreds of artistic traditions in these three vast areas but rather studies in depth thirty-six art styles within all three areas using the methods of art history, including stylistic analysis and iconographic interpretation. Emphasis is on the art in cultural context and as a system of visual communication within each tribal area. Where appropriate for a more complete understanding of the art, data from archaeology, ethnology, linguistics, religion, and other humanistic disciplines are included.Among the peoples and cultures whose art is studied are the Haida, Kwakiutl, and Tlingit; the Hohokam and Mongollon, the Anasazi and Hopi; the Dogon and Bamana of Mali; the Asante of Ghana; the Benin, Yoruba, and Ibo of Nigeria; the Fan, the Bamum, and the Kuba of Central Africa; Australian aboriginal and Island New Guinea art; Island Melanesia art; central and eastern Polynesia; Hawaii and the Maori in Marginal Polynesia. The format of the text and selected illustrations is based on seventeen years of teaching African, North American Indian, and South Pacific art to undergraduate and graduate students at Herbert H. Lehman College (CUNY), New York University, and Columbia University. The book is intended for art history and anthropology students and the interested lay reader or collector. The detailed notes at the end of the book are for further study, research, and understanding of the tribal art style under discussion.
