Book excerpt: St Oswald was the youngest of the three great monastic reformers of tenth-century England whose work transformed English religious, intellectual and political life. Certainly a more attractive, and perhaps a more effective, figure than either St Dunstan or St AEthelwold, Oswald's impact upon his cathedrals at Worcester and York and upon his West Midland and East Anglian monasteries was radical and lasting. In this volume the researches of a team of leading scholars throw new light on St Oswald's background, career, influence and cult and on the society that he helped to shape. His cathedral at Worcester and his monastery at Ramsey were among the richest and best documented Anglo-Saxon churches. The volume therefore provides a window on to the realities of tenth-century English politics, religion and economics in the light of contemporary developments on the continent.

Book excerpt: This definitive study takes as its subject a group of melodies copied many times, even within single manuscripts. Professor Randel is therefore able to base his conclusions about the relationship of the manuscript sources to one another on twenty-six separate Spanish manuscripts. He shows that there were actually four distinct traditions associated with these manuscripts instead of two as formerly assumed. By comparing the four traditions, he draws new conclusions about the relative antiquity of the written tradition for these psalm tones, the presence or absence of a modal system in the Mozarabic chant, and the development of the two general types of notation. Originally published in 1969. Book excerpt: An Open Access edition of this book is available on the Liverpool University Press website and the OAPEN library. Fictional reconstructions of the Gospels continue to find a place in contemporary literature and in the popular imagination. Present day writers of New Testament fiction and drama are usually considered as part of a tradition formed by mid-to-late-twentieth-century authors such as Robert Graves, Nikos Kazantzakis and Anthony Burgess. This book looks back further to the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, when the templates of the majority of today’s Gospel fictions and dramas were set down. In doing so, it examines the extent to which significant works of biblical scholarship both influenced and inspired literary works. Focusing on writers such as Oscar Wilde, George Moore and Marie Corelli, this timely new addition to the English Association Monographs series will be essential reading for scholars working at the intersection of literature and theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The area whose capital was the southern Lombard city of Benevento developed a culture identified with the characteristic form of writing known as the Beneventan script, which was used throughout the area and was brought to perfection at the abbey of Montecassino in the late eleventh century. This repertory, along with other now-vanished or suppressed local varieties of music, give a far richer picture of the variety of musical practice in early medieval Europe than was formerly available. Thomas Forrest Kelly has identified and collected the surviving sources of an important repertory of early medieval music; this is the so-called Beneventan Chant, used in southern Italy in the early middle ages, before the adoption there of the now-universal music known as Gregorian chant. Because it was deliberately suppressed in the course of the eleventh century, this music survives mostly in fragments and palimpsests, and the fascinating process of restoring the repertory piece by piece is told in the studies in this book. A companion volume to this collection also by Professor Kelly details the practice of Medieval music.

The text focuses on its movement away from the concept of chants as products and towards the idea of chants as processes. The essays are loosely connected through their bearing on one or more of three themes: the role of orality in the transmission of chants circa 700-1400; varying degrees of stability or instability in the transmission of chant; and the role of the formula in the construction of chant.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saint Gregory the Great was Pope from 590 to 604, launching the famous Gregorian Mission, the first recorded large-scale mission from Rome, to convert the pagan Anglo-Saxons of England to Christianity. The epithet “the Great” reflects Gregory’s status as a celebrated writer as well as a ruler. The fourth and final of the traditional Latin Fathers of the Church, Gregory is now regarded as the first exponent of a truly medieval, sacramental spirituality. His Commentary on Job and his handbook for rulers, Pastoral Rule, were extremely popular treatises throughout the middle ages, while the Dialogues feature a compelling life of Saint Benedict and his many miracles. Gregory’s works provided practical wisdom and enlightenment for the people of the Dark Ages. Delphi’s Ancient Classics series provides eReaders with the wisdom of the Classical world, with both English translations and the original Latin texts. This comprehensive eBook presents Gregory the Great’s collected works, with illustrations, informative introductions and the usual Delphi bonus material. (Version 1) * Beautifully illustrated with images relating to Gregory’s life and works * Features the major works of Gregory I, in both English translation and the original Latin * Concise introductions to the major texts * Excellent formatting of the texts * Includes rare sermons by Gregory, first time in digital print * Features three bonus biographies, including the Venerable Bede’s account of Gregory’s life — immerse yourself in the Saint’s ancient world * Scholarly ordering of texts into chronological order and literary genres Please visit www.delphiclassics.com to explore our range of Ancient Classics titles or buy the entire series as a Super Set CONTENTS: The Translations Commentary on Job (Translated by J. Book excerpt: The Christian discovery of the Babylonian Talmud is a significant landmark in the long and complex history of anti-Jewish polemic. While the Talmudic corpus developed in the same period as early Christianity, this post-biblical text was largely unknown to the Christians. Full awareness of the Talmud among Christian authors did not arise until the late 1230s, when the Jewish convert Nicholas Donin presented a Latin translation of Talmudic fragments to Pope Gregory IX. Though the Talmud was subsequently put on trial (1240) and burnt (1241/2) in Paris, the controversy surrounding it continued over the following years, as Pope Innocent IV called for a revision of its condemnation. The textual basis for this revision is the Extractiones de Talmud, that is, a Latin translation of 1.922 Talmudic fragments. The articles in this volume shed new light on this monumental translation and its historical context. They also offer critical editions of related texts, such as Donin’s anti-Talmudic polemic. Authors of the contributions are: Wout van Bekkum, Piero Capelli, Ulisse Cecini, Enric Cortès, Óscar de la Cruz Palma, Federico Dal Bo, Alexander Fidora, Görge K. Hasselhoff, Moisés Orfali, Ursula Ragacs and Eulàlia Vernet i Pons.
