Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has long been accepted that the social and cultural meanings of the car far exceed the practical need for mobility. This book marks the first attempt to contribute to road safety, considering, in depth, these meanings and the cultures of driving that are shaped by them. In the Company of Cars examines the perspectives that young people have on cars, and explores the broader social and cultural meanings of the car, the potential it is supposed to fulfil, and the anticipated benefits it offers to young drivers. From focus-group research conducted in Australia, the book takes up the views of young people on a range of topics, from media to car use to gender performance. The author looks at the ways in which driving has been defined by articulations of the car that emphasize valued features of the car-driver, such as gender, youthfulness, status, age, power, raciness, sexiness, ruggedness and competitiveness. The book takes a global perspective on mobility, considering the impact of cars and road safety policy on quality of life, and the value and significance of other modes of travel, in a range of countries.

Sure, you need to be able to drive a car fast - and Jenson is on hand to pass on a few tricks of the trade here - but you also need to know the real rules for making it to the top. Like, how to tell a multiple F1 champion they need to check their blind-spot. What the difference is between a helmet and a hat, and indeed a 'helmet-hat'. How to practise your champagne spray ahead of the big day. Why it is never, ever, under any circumstances a good idea to buy a yacht. And how to face down your team when you've just stacked their multi-million-pound car into a wall during practice. But 'JB' (nicknames in F1 run the full range from initials to, well, just using first names) doesn't stop there. HTBAF1D (catchy) lifts the lid on the people, the places, the weird rituals, the motorhomes, the media, the cars, the perks and the disasters. Join Jenson as he reveals how not to race a stupid big truck, why driving Le Mans is like having five shots of tequila before lunch, and what to do when you finally hang up your helmet-hat.
Download or read book Return to Glory written by Matthew DeBord and published by Open Road + Grove/Atlantic. This book was released on 2017-06-06 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This page-turning combination of business book and adventure saga tells the tale of the Ford Motor Company’s” 2016 triumph at Le Mans (The New York Times, “10 New Books We Recommend This Week”). At the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, Ford unveiled a new car—and the automotive world lost its collective mind. This wasn’t some new Explorer or Focus. Onto the stage rolled a carbon-fiber GT powered by a six-cylinder Ecoboost engine that churned out over 600 horsepower. It was sexy and jaw dropping, but, more than that, it was a callback to the legendary Ford GT40 Mk IIs that stuck it to Ferrari and finished 1-2-3 at Le Mans in 1966. Detroit was back, and Ford was going back to Le Mans. Matthew DeBord, a veteran auto industry journalist, tells the incredible story of Ford’s resurgence in Return to Glory. A decade ago, CEO Alan Mulally took over the iconic company and, thanks to his “One Ford” plan, helped it weather the financial crisis without a government bailout. DeBord revisits the story of the 1960s, details the creation of the new GT, and follows the team through the racing season—from Daytona to Sebring and Laguna Seca in Monterey. Finally, DeBord joins the Ford team in Le Mans in June 2016. This fabled twenty-four-hour endurance race is designed to break cars and drivers, and it was at Le Mans, fifty years after the company’s greatest triumph, that Ford’s comeback was put to the ultimate test.

Download or read book Mind Battles written by Lizzie Highland and published by Authors On Line Ltd. This book was released on 2004-04 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is no ordinary romance. It is packed with intrigue, mystery, tragedy, love and betrayal. Yes, nothing specially unusual there, but it is a most amazing story. A family is torn apart by the will of the father and head of a huge haulage company. It manages to keep the two sons, already at loggerheads, on a downward spiral of mistrust. One son, Keith, is filled with hatred not understood by his younger brother Chris. Their mother holds a guilty secret and when she wishes to remarry, it seems all hell breaks loose. Chris has lost his true love in tragic circumstances and at her graveside one day, he meets her twin, fainting with shock at the likeness. Psychic powers are definitely at work as amazing facts begin to come into being. Keith's marriage is miserable and complicated as alcohol clouds his very being. His wife loves the men, but then, he loves the women. The will has added to his morose nature and filled with resentment towards the family, he then proceeds to defraud them. Although this sounds a little like good son, bad son, nothing is so clear cut. Chris doesn't understand the hatred from his brother, equally well, Keith is in the same quandry. As the story unravels and things become clear, disaster overtakes the family. This keeps you turning the pages with eager anticipation and as the story is told mainly with 'conversation', we are left in no doubt as to the feelings of each character. A beautiful story, well written and a must for every romantic/mystery reader.
