Book excerpt: Excerpt from East Tennessee Sketches But whatever it was it tasted good, for our appetites had been sharpened by a few hours of jolting over sometimes very rough roads, and we always enjoyed our noonings when after having eaten, Albert would stretch him self full length for a nap while I took notes of our doings and surroundings, or read another chapter of the ever handy novel. Then when our time was up, and old Kate had had a drink as well as food, she was put back to the buggy while I gathered our belongings, and away we would start to stop no more till evening. At times we went to a hotel. Then again when far away from any town and night coming ou, we had to beg to be received at some farm house. And food and shelter be provided for ourselves and our tired old Kate. And it was at some of these stopping places that many amusing incidents occurred which I will relate. On one subject, however, the writers were of one heart and mind, viz x the pleasant experiences of a childhood spent in rustic and untutored innocence among the mountains 'and valleys of East Tennessee; and these scenes and experiences, after the lapse of years, they at tempt to reflect in the sketches which follow. They may appear crude to the reader, yet they are gratefully presented as tokens of love to the folk-lore of the good old days that are no more. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Vanity of Human Grandeur: With Sketches of and Tributes to the Memory of Prominent Persons From East Tennessee All earthly riches and pleasures and splendors pass away. Only the soul is immortal. It lives forever It is more valuable than all earthly things. Jesus said, What will it profit a man if he gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Read history. And you will be convinced of the vanity of human grandeur. I have not read all of this book in the manuscript, but hope to read it when printed. I may not agree with all its author says, but I ask for it a thought ful reading. Each must read and accept or reject for him self. May both the book and its author have that success which comes from truth and faithfulness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from East Tennessee and the Civil War The object of the author in preparing this work was twofold: First, to rescue from oblivion certain important historical facts, fast fading from the memory of men, con nected with the struggle in East Tennessee from 1861 to 1865; secondly, to vindicate the course of the Union peo ple of East Tennessee in separating from their friends and kindred in the South, and in adhering to the National Government. Their constancy and fortitude, their trials and sufi'erings ror what they deemed right, have no paral lel in the history of this country. To present these in connected and permanent form it is believed will add a new and missing chapter to the history of the great drama known as the Civil War. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Committee for Relief to East Tennessee: For the State of New-York Early in the year 1864, the great sufferings of the loyal inhabitants of East Tennessee were brought home to the hearts of the benevolent and patriotic people of the Northern and Eastern States, and a combined effort was made for their relief. The case was one of more than usual hardship. During the summer and fall of 1863, this section of the Union, rich and fertile as its inhabitants were brave and loyal, had been the theatre of active war, and three times the armies of the Union and of the Rebellion, swaying back and forth in turn, had alternately ravaged the country, stripping the soil of its crops, and driving before them every living thing which could contribute to sustain life; while in their train marauding bands pillaged every house of its necessaries of life, reducing the before thriving inhabitants to abject poverty. Stripping the family of all the economic gifts of civilization, these heartless and ruffian bands left the mother and the child, the old man and the beardless boy, in almost the normal state of mankind; without other clothing than the rudest of home make - other food than the roots of the field or the berries of the forest - other tools than the simplest mechanical contrivances. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Civil War Sketches and Incidents, Vol. 1 Remembering the apparent unanimity with which the people Of the south sustained the secession movement after hostilities had actually begun, we are apt to forget how devout was the love for the Union in some sections Of the Confederacy. Nowhere, not even in Eastern Tennessee, was this sentiment stronger than In portions of the state Of North Carolina. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Rebellion in Bradley County, East Tennessee The following work, like many other books is forced into existence by circumstances. Regardless of the previous plans, previous and present wishes or present fears of the author, it arbitrarily assumes its present form. A believer in special Providence, he is compelled to accept it as one of the Providential tasks, if not one of the Providential afflictions of his life. Having prepared to publish the history of the 9th Indiana, under the present high rates of printing, it was found that upwards of $4,000 were necessary to issue 2,000 copies - a book to be properly illustrated and finished, and to contain 600 pages. Only $1,900 had been contributed for this purpose. The scheme must therefore be abandoned, or some method invented to save it from an entire failure. If the sale of the present work does not obviate the difficulty, the enterprise will be relinquished and the subscriptions refunded to all who desire them. The long and heart-rending delay of this work, more heart-rending to the writer than to all others concerned, is as unavoidable on his part as it is afflicting, and the only present consolation is the hope that the sequel may yet be to some extent an atonement for past disappointment. In regard to the present work, many things suggest themselves that might be said; but in any case, it is bad taste, bad economy, and in principle very suspicious to re-write a book in its preface. The principles entertained and views expressed in the following pages, morally, politically and socially, as general laws, are principles and views for which our only regret is that circumstances have militated against their being expressed more pungently and more at length. No person is fit to write upon the subject of our great rebellion who does not feel that it was at war with every principle of justice, every principle sacred to God and humanity, and that his pen is a two-edged sword put into his hand to wield in defense of his own life and of the life of posterity, as the sword and the musket were wielded at Shiloh and other battle-fields of the war - wielded to the death - by the friends of God and of human rights. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Account of the Fund for the Relief of East Tennessee: With a Complete List of the Contributors Some further description of the natural features of this favored region will be found in the following pages. It is sufficient to observe here, that it was inhabited before the commencement of the war by a substantial population of about employed chiefly in agriculture, and for the most part cultivating farms of moderate size. Although surrounded on all sides by slaveholding States, and conterminous with those in which the slaves stand in the largest propor tion to the free population, less than ten per cent. Of the entire population of East Tennessee are slaves. It is no doubt in a considerable degree owing to this cause, that the great majority of the people have adhered to the Union, under circumstances of unexampled trial, from the commencement of the war avowedly levied by the South for the protection, perpetuation, and ex tension of slavery.
