Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from East London Visions This book is neither a novel nor (strictly speaking) an autobiography, but rather a statement and criticism of Life on an unusual plan. There is little chronological order or development in the story, which is that of a young man's struggle for a living in London. If the writer in this respect, as also in describing his characters as well as letting them speak for themselves, disregards accepted canons of Art, he does so not in ignorance - for occasionally it is evident that he knows and can observe these rules. He is as if setting down what occurs to him as it occurs, nor does he scruple to employ, as in natural conversation, the first personal pronoun. It would, however, be a mistake to think that behind all the narration there is not really a cogent plan, and even symbolism intended, though the more disguised by this apparently loose treatment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Labour and Life of the People, Vol. 2: London Continued IN passing from the special study of East London to a review of the whole Metropolis the method of inquiry into the condition of the people has been slightly changed. In dealing with East London (and afterwards with Central London and Battersea) the unit taken was the family. In extending over the larger area the street has been substituted as a working basis. Instead of noting the number of children going to school from each household with the employment and social position of its head, we have contented ourselves with stating the number of children street by street, dividing them as to class according to what is known of the parents, but giving only general particu lars of the occupations. The result is, that the division of the population according to the conditions under which they live has been maintained, but that according to employment has been dropped. It is no improvement to omit from the statistics particulars as to employment, but in order to cover the whole ground in a reasonable time it was necessary to lighten the work. Moreover, I hope to be able to deal with the industrial Side of the question later in another and more complete way. Book excerpt: This book tells the fascinating story of West Ham United Football Club during the First World War, charting the relationship between war and football by following the pursuits of West Ham from 1913/14 to 1918/19. In many ways, it was their success in wartime competitions that led to them being accepted into the Football League in 1919, paving the way for subsequent FA Cup and League success. As well as a football story, this book is about the impact of the war on Britain. It documents the social implications of war on Londoners and the social and political influence of football, the armed forces and civilians alike. Looking closely at the 13th Service Battalion, also known as the ‘West Ham Pals’, the book includes such players as George Kay, Ted Hufton, and their manager and coach, Syd King and Charlie Paynter respectively.

He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book excerpt: This book introduces physics students and teachers to the historical development of the kinetic theory of gases, by providing a collection of the most important contributions by Clausius, Maxwell and Boltzmann, with introductory surveys explaining their significance. In addition, extracts from the works of Boyle, Newton, Mayer, Joule, Helmholtz, Kelvin and others show the historical context of ideas about gases, energy and irreversibility. In addition to five thematic essays connecting the classical kinetic theory with 20th century topics such as indeterminism and interatomic forces, there is an extensive international bibliography of historical commentaries on kinetic theory, thermodynamics, etc. published in the past four decades. The book will be useful to historians of science who need primary and secondary sources to be conveniently available for their own research and interpretation, along with the bibliography which makes it easier to learn what other historians have already done on this subject.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Place of English Literature in the Modern University an Inaugural Lecture Delivered at East London College on October 2: An Inaugural Lecture Delivered at East London College on October 2, 1913 I welcome this opportunity of thanking publicly the Senate of the University of London for appointing me to the newly created chair of English Language and Literature tenable at this college. I have also gratefully to acknowledge the part played in my election by the Principal and Council of this college, and by the Drapers' Company, to whose enlightened munificence this college lies under deep obligation. The Drapers' Company, by virtue of its assiduous promotion of advanced education, is rendering the nation the highest service of which wealth is at the moment capable. It is, perhaps, hardly necessary for me to mention that my life has thus far been mainly spent in the study rather than in the teaching of English literature. I have not lacked experience as a lecturer or examiner, but my new office gives me larger educational opportunities than any I have yet enjoyed. I enter on my duties with good hope and with a resolve to meet the calls on me to the best of my ability. What Bacon said of money I hold to be true of learning: it is 'not good except it be spread.'
