Book excerpt: According to the provisions of the surface atmospheric electricity theory, the space charge of the surface air layer owes its origin to ionization by exhaling soil radon. According to field observations, a model representation of relations between hydrogen, methane, radon, and surface atmospheric electricity elements is composed. Bubbles of two volatile gases carry soil radon from a depth of 4-6 m to the near-surface atmosphere. As a consequence, light ions produced by ionization determine polar conductivity of the surface air; light ion aggregation with neutral condensation nuclei produces heavy ions primarily responsible for the atmospheric electric field. This means that the surface atmospheric electricity is determined by local geology and geodynamics.According to the field observations, the radon content in the surface soil layers is at least two orders of magnitude higher than the concentration of ionizer exhalation. A change in the soil radon content of a single percent will lead to a twofold change in the exhalation concentration, i.e., to a twofold change in the polar conductivities and the atmospheric electric field. This means that the surface atmospheric electricity elements will be extremely sensitive to variations in the subvertical carrier gas (hydrogen and methane) flow density. The results of multiple field observations prove the correctness of the above assumptions. The increased soil-atmosphere air exchange above fault zones, the basement top settling area, and the zones of natural or human-made soil loosening leads to an abrupt decrease in the atmospheric electric field and an increase in the polar air conductivity. An increase in the sub-vertical flow density of hydrogen above the ore body cap or methane in the oil field plume inevitably leads to low values of the atmospheric electric field within the deposit boundaries. The effect can be increased by the presence of natural or human-made seismic excitation in geological environments. The industrial level withdrawal of artesian waters is accompanied by a multiple increase in the atmospheric electric field above the area of hydrogeological processes; methane injection into the underground gas storage, industrial disposal of industrial wastewater leads to the opposite effect, i.e., a decrease of the atmospheric electric field. Taking into account the model constructed, complex measurements of surface atmospheric electricity elements--hydrogen and radon--allow for an indirect expression estimate of the soil methane content above the level of (10-6 - 10-5) vol.% and monitoring of the landslide stressed state.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sound earthing & grounding of the electrical installation is the fundamental requirement for safe and reliable operation. There is a lot of misconception among practicing engineers (both design and field) on this topic. Study of this application guide will bring clarity to the reader on this topic. Earthing methods for different applications like EHV Switchyard, MV and LV systems and earthing application to special areas like Solar farms, GIS terminations, C&I (Control & Instrumentation) systems in power and industrial plants are covered. Remarks on mis-interpretation of IE rules are made. The reader will understand why different grounding methods are adopted at different voltage levels. Relationship between Grounding and Transformer Ampere Turns Balance theory is clearly brought out which is the cornerstone of grounding exercise. Features of ungrounded and grounded systems are covered in detail including demystification of zig zag connection. Ready to use spread sheets for sizing of NGT/NGR are given. Supported by copious illustrations from field experience, fundamental concepts of grounding are explained by solving problems of gradually increasing complexity. Various practices adopted for Neutral grounding of generator are described. Students will tremendously benefit by studying this guide as it combines theory with lot of practical examples. He/She will acquire the necessary skills upfront needed by industry. The design engineer or consultants will find the guide very useful to perform optimum design. Origin of many nuisance tripping or power quality issues is poor earthing/grounding. The practicing and field engineers will be able to address many of the problems encountered at site due to faulty earthing and grounding.

Book excerpt: This book seeks to explain in simple terms the behavior of fault current through the general mass of earth, the origin of short circuit current and its value, and how a circuit breaker operates. The drawings are unique and allow the reader to visualize the behavior of a fault current. The book clarifies common myths pertaining to a grounding electrode, short circuit, and opens neutral conditions, and provides an unambiguous understanding of the theoretical and practical explanation for an effective earthing and protective system in electrical installations. There are numerous grounding problems and unexplained fault conditions in electrical circuitry that are taken for granted and left unattended for extended periods. Potential voltage can be found on the earthing conductors in processing plants, refineries, and other industrial plants. A combination of topics in this book addresses problems that have been adversely affecting the electrical industry for years. There are a number of systems in the electrical industry that are common in the workplace but are not understood by the average workman who has to work with these systems daily. Systems such as ungrounded systems, clean earthing systems, motor controls, resistance grounding, lightning protection systems, and Intra earthing systems are all common systems; however, the knowledge base of these systems is very limited. This book highlights the basics of these topics and gives a working overview of these systems. The book also discusses the principle of operation of the ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). It is expected that the information provided will allow the reader to visualize various types of GFCIs and the principle of operation without necessarily having to revert to other text.

The book provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles and practice of modern construction and services. In addition most chapters contain information on earlier construction techniques to reflect the age profile fo the UK housing stock. This fourth edition has a revised text and hundreds of revised graphics, new illustrations and photos, an additional chapter on concrete housing, and an eight page colour section showing a series of photographs of a modern housing development. This book is the recommended construction text at a number of colleges and universities. It concentrates on principles and practice rather than details and regulations. In doing so it should enable the reader to demonstrate a comprehensive and genuine understanding of modern house construction and its evolution over the last 100 years.
