Raised to the episcopate of Bangor in 1715, he was translated to Hereford in 1721, to Salisbury in 1728, to Winchester in 1734. He lived till 1761, and was thus a prominent figure in the English Church for forty - Six years. Nor does this period comprise by any means the whole of his public life. He had held an important London lectureship as early as 1694 and in 1705 he had already entered into the full tide of controversy.
