Long's Expedition, 1819-1820 Atkinson, ' was set in motion in the autumn of 1818, and a considerable body of troops passed the following winter near the present site of Leavenworth, Kansas. In the spring of 1819, however, defects in the plans began to hamper the execution of the enterprise. Those were the early days of steam navigation, and the waters of the Mis souri had not yet been stirred by paddle-wheels. Pru dence counselled that the success of the movement should not be staked on the behavior of steamboats in untried waters. Nevertheless, the authorities decided against the old-fashioned keel - boats recommended by Atkinson 5 in arranging for transportation, a further blunder was made in engaging a contractor without competition or adequate securities. The service proved entirely ineffi cient, and it was not until late in September of 1819 that the troops were concentrated at Council Bluffs, where, perforce, a halt was made for the winter. The river was low when I passed it, and all the water was discharged at three jets. The patches of snow that were left under the fences and on the rising grounds were melting fast. The road was one continued slough, up to the very portico of the house. The dwelling stands on a gentle eminence, and is neat and even handsome in its exterior, with a ight of steps leading up to the portico. A lawn and wood, which must be pleasant in summer, stretch behind; and from the front there is a noble object on the horizon, - the mountain-chain which traverses the State, and makes it eminent for its scenery. The shifting lights upon these blue moun tains were a delightful refreshment to the eye after so many weeks of city life as we had passed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Western Travels, Vol. 2 January 1st, 1820. – I left Princeton at ten o'clock, with Mr. Phillips and Mr. Wheeler; and here parted with my good and kind friend Ingle. I met and spoke, ten miles off, with two hog-jobbing judges, Judge Prince and Judge Daniel, driving home twenty fat hogs, which they had just bought. I reached, and rested at Petersburgh, consisting of fifteen houses. I passed good farms. Our landlord of this infant town, though having an [333] ostler, was compelled to groom, saddle, unsaddle, and to do all himself. Having fifty dollars owing to him, from a gentleman of Evansville, he arrested him, when he went into the bounds; then he sued one of the bondsmen, who also entered the bounds. The squire is next to be sued, who, it is expected, will do likewise. Sunday, 2nd. – I rode thirty-one miles this day, and rested at Edmonstone, in a little cold log-hole, out of which I turned an officer's black cat, which jumped from the roof into our faces, while in bed; but she soon found her way in again, through a hole in the roof. The cat liked our fire. We got no coffee nor tea, but cold milk and pork, and corn cake. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Western Travels, 1748-1846, Vol. 1: A Series of Annotated Reprints of Some of the Best and Rarest Contemporary Volumes of Travel; Journals of Conrad Weiser (1748), George Croghan (1750-1765), Christian Frederick Post (1758), And Thomas Morris (1764) In planning for this series of reprints of Early Western Travels, we were confronted by an embarrassment of riches. To reissue all of the many excellent works of travel originally published during the formative period of Western settlement, would obviously be impossible. A selection had therefore to be made, both as to period and material. The century commencing with Conrad Weiser's notable journey to the Western Indians in 1748, set convenient limits to the field in the matter of time. The question of material was much more difficult. It being unlikely that any two editors would choose the same volumes for reprint, criticism of our list will undoubt edly be made. It should, however, candidly be explained that the matter of selection has in each case necessarily been affected by two important considerations (1) the intrinsic value of the original from the historical Side, and (2) its present rarity and market value. The Editor having selected a list of items worthy of a new lease of life, the Publishers, from their intimate knowledge of the commercial aspect of rare Americana, advised which of these in their opinion were sufficiently in demand by libraries and collectors to render the enterprise financially productive. It is believed that this co-operative method has resulted in an interesting collection, and given point to the descriptive sub-title Some of the best and rarest contemporary volumes of travel. In the Mid dle and Far West, during the period of early American settlement. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Western Travels, 1748-1846, Vol. 28: A Series of Annotated Reprints of Some of the Best and Rarest Contemporary Volumes of Travel, Descriptive of the Aborigines and Social and Economic Conditions in the Middle and Far West, During the Period of Early American Settlement In our volume xxi we traced the rise and fall of the trad ing adventures to this far Western territory of Captain Nathaniel Wyeth of Massachusetts. His two expeditions left on the Willamette River a small residuum of New Eng landers, and before his departure he had seen the coming of the first American missionaries, ploneers then as now in advancing American interests. The existence of Oregon had now come to be known to a considerable body Of our people, its fertility and beauty had been enlarged upon by several writers, its advantages pictured, and its possession desired. In returning to the United States, one of the missionaries, Jason Lee, undertook a tour through the border states of the West, lecturing and raising funds for his work. In the autumn of 1838 he stopped at the Illinois town of Peoria, where his glowing descriptions of the land whence he came produced an impression sufficiently lasting to result in the organization 'of an emigration society, which prepared to set forth for this land of promise early the fol lowing spring. Among the band was a young Vermont lawyer, Thomas Jefferson F arnham, who a few years ear lier had removed to Illinois, and who now sought on the Western prairies recuperation Of his wasting health through outdoor exploits and change of scene. He also avowed a patriotic purpose to take possession of this fair territory of Oregon for the American flag, and to aid in resisting the British fur - trade monopoly. His address and eloquence won him the honor of being chosen captain of the small band of nineteen adventurers, none of whom knew aught of wilderness life or was prepared to endure the hardships of the proposed journey. Arrived at Buffalo before the declaration of war, he was upon the Canadian side of the Niagara frontier when the fateful news arrived, and for a brief time was detained as a hostage by the British General Brock. When released, he returned to Massachusetts; but two years later started for Kentucky passing west through New York State, and oating down the Allegheny and Ohio to Cincinnati. On this journey he gives us an interesting picture of river life, and its exigencies; while with graphic pen he portrays the bad roads, fever and ague, and deserted condition of the country through which he returned to his Eastern home. In 1815 began his longest journey through the West. He encountered at Olean, on the Allegheny, a large body of Eastern emigrants who were awaiting the opening of navigation and the rise of the Western rivers. Swept rap idly down on the freshet, Buttrick landed in Kentucky; but having been attacked by his old enemy, fever and ague, he embarked for New Orleans, thus enabling him to draw for us a brief but vivid picture of Mississippi navigation. From the Southern metropolis Buttrick started on foot for the North, over the route known as the Natchez trail a wild and lonely journey of a thousand miles, through the land of semi-hostile Indians and backwoodsmen nearly as savage. Upon this hazardous journey he was 'generally alone, always sick, often hungry, sometimes nearly starved, and beset by drunken Indians; but he struggled on, arriving in Cincinnati after forty-seven days en route.
