Yet, whereas in other regions conflict prevention stresses formal, top-down inter-governmental structures, in the Horn of Africa an alternative conflict management regime that seeks to build on local capacity and is based on inclusive and collaborative decision-making has emerged. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "These two volumes clearly demonstrate the efforts by a wide range of African scholars to explain the roots, routes, regimes and resolution of African conflicts and how to re-build post-conflict societies. They offer sober and serious analyses, eschewing the sensationalism of the western media and the sophistry of some of the scholars in the global North for whom African conflicts are at worst a distraction and at best a confirmation of their pet racist and petty universalist theories." --From the introduction by Paul Tiyambe Zeleza This book offers analyses of a range of African conflicts and demonstrates that peace is too important to be left to outsiders.
Book Synopsis Early Warning and Conflict Resolution by : Kumar Rupesinghe
Download or read book Early Warning and Conflict Resolution written by Kumar Rupesinghe and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 1992 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Can we prevent violent conflicts and wars in the future? This volume reflects the growing interest in developing an early warning capability within the research community, in international humanitarian and aid agencies and in international institutions such as the United Nations." "By 'early warning' we mean information that can provide a timely alert to potential conflicts. Key issues covered in the book include: the manner in which the concept of early warning is translated into methodological approaches; identification of root causes for disputes and conflict situations; selection of indicators; determination of methodologies; use of new technologies; possible development of networking; search for conditions for the settlement of conflicts. The processing, analysis and evaluation of information is systematically approached in the collection." "The reader will find case-studies and practical approaches as well as theory-oriented papers. Authors have been encouraged to take a real-life approach rather than pursue a lofty and inaccessible theoretical discourse of little consequence."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis A Dangerous Delay by : Debbie Hillier

Book excerpt: More than 13 million people are still affected by the crisis in the Horn of Africa. There were clear early warning signs many months in advance, yet there was insufficient response until it was far too late. This briefing, published jointly by Oxfam and Save the Children, examines the factors that allowed a drought in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and Djibouti to develop into a full-scale crisis of hunger and livelihoods, such that millions of people suffered and thousands died. Its main focus is the response of international aid system, although the ultimate importance of enhanced resilience for the communities themselves is recognised. Recommendations: A change in approach to chronic drought situations is needed: managing the risks, not the crisis. This means that the all actors {u2013} national governments, donors, NGOs, and the UN need to: act decisively on information from early warning systems and not wait for certainty before responding; actively seek to reduce drought risk in all activities, ensuring that long-term development interventions increase resilience and adapt to the changing context; and change organisational structures, invest in people and provide flexible funding in order to break down the divisions between humanitarian and development work.
Book Synopsis Preventive Measures by : John L. Davies
Download or read book Preventive Measures written by John L. Davies and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1998 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: State failure, ethnopolitical war, genocide, famine, and refugee flows are variants of a type of complex political and humanitarian crisis, exemplified during the 1990s in places like Somalia, Bosnia, Liberia, and Afghanistan. The international consequences of such crises are profound, often threatening regional security and requiring major inputs of humanitarian assistance. They also may pose long-term and costly challenges of rebuilding shattered governments and societies. A vital policy question is whether failures can be diagnosed far enough in advance to facilitate effective international efforts at prevention or peaceful transformation. This volume of original essays examines crisis early warning factors at different levels, in different settings, and judges their effectiveness according to various models. Top contributors offer answers along with analyses as they move from early warning to early response in their policy recommendations.
Book Synopsis Human Rights and Conflict Transformation in Africa by : Laurence Juma
Download or read book Human Rights and Conflict Transformation in Africa written by Laurence Juma and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2013 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study maps the interactions between human rights norms and values, on the one hand, and conflict resolution, post-conflict peace-building and reconstruction, on the other. It advances the view both from a theoretical and practical standpoint, that human rights have a role to play throughout the life of any conflict: from the pre-conflict to the post-conflict and reconstruction stages. Identifying entry points for human rights in the pre-conflict stage leading up to the establishment of the rule of law and societal reconstruction after the conflict, this book uses Sierra Leone and Democratic Republic of Congo experiences to illustrate the obstacles, the successes, and the significance of human rights norms to the overall peace agenda in societies afflicted by conflict.
