Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Sources of English Unitarian Christianity The merits of this volume, as an example of special historical study, are so conspicuous, that it might well dispense with all external commendation: and from mine, I am well aware, no other advantage can be gained than such support as an old man's friendship and esteem may be supposed to afford to a young author's modesty. The investigation to which the following pages are devoted interests me the more, because it takes me up far less as the critic than as the learner, and leaves me grateful for new knowledge and for many a charming or impressive picture from the drama of the past. The author's problem, - to find the source of Unitarian Christianity in this country, - has naturally led him away from the main roads of the revolt from Rome, which ended in the Anglican, the Lutheran, and the Reformed Churches, and thrown him into the eccentric bypaths of the Reformation, where the freer minds are sure to be found, and coherent thought is yet in the making. Whether or not he alights there on the true solution of his problem, I will not venture to pronounce; but as he questions group after group, and elicits their curious enthusiasms, and follows them in their flight from danger, to Emden, to London, to Chiavenna, to Basel, to Poland, he lays bare the very spirit of the times in its ferment of belief and struggle of character. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Unitarian Christianity: A Discourse on Some of the Distinguishing Opinions of Unitarians, Delivered at Baltimore, May 5, 1819 Charming's discourse on Unitarian Christianity (commonly spoken of as the "Baltimore Sermon") is his most important contribution to the Unitarian controversy of years ago, and to the forming of a body of opinion which led to the definite organization of the Unitarian movement. It marks a memorable epoch in the history of religious thought in America, where it created a profounder impression at the time it was delivered and has had a wider, deeper, and more long continued influence than any other sermon ever preached. Besides its very large immediate circulation, it has passed through edition after edition for a hundred years; it has been reprinted in England, France, Holland, Germany, Hungary, India, and perhaps yet other countries; it is still circulated in thousands of copies every year; and it has opened to multitudes of readers a welcome door of escape from the shadow of Calvinism. The centenary of this memorable sermon offers occasion for a re-issue of it with a brief introduction and analysis, which may increase its value to the reader. The significance of the sermon will be best appreciated when it is seen against the background of the religious history of the time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theology of Unitarians The second difficulty to which I referred meets us when we attempt to make our definition of Unitarian theology a distinctive one. There is, I suppose, no body of Christians that does not contain many advanced thinkers. If, by some irresistible call, all those in the various Christian denominations, and outside of them, who hold views similar to those which Unitarians cher ish as their own, should come forth, and range themselves under a common banner, great would be the multitude. These beliefs are found masquerading under strange names. Some of the treatises, for instance, on the doc trine of the Trinity put forth by one theologian and another of orthodox sects, are read by Unitarians with some surprise. When they have brushed away the obscurities that result from the use of technical phrases. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Unitarian, 1895, Vol. 10 If there is anything which hitherto has been regarded as indisputably the supreme factor in human progress, the distinguish ing characteristic of man over the lower animals, and the department of our being on whose evolution nature is now coneen trating all its energies, it is his intellectual endowment. Literature is forever singing the praises of man's lordly mind and godlike reason. The whole immense dis tance between civilization and savagery is supposed to be due to the difference there is between their natural mental gifts. And, while the Church is regarded as a valuable help in keeping a person, after he has been trained up, from going to the had, our courses of study in school and college, and our taxes and enthusiasm for popular edu cation, are based almost entirely on the idea that the foremost requisite for making a boy a good citizen and a valuable member of society is to make him a good scholar. Y., 1803 1903 It has been no easy task to collect from widely scat tered places the documents and information needed. It has, however, been a pleasant one; and I am deeply indebted to many for their assistance so freely and kindly given. I am especially indebted to the Rev. Howard N. Brown for kindly placing at my disposal the material which he had gathered with a view to writing the story. I am also indebted to him for kindly revising the manu script before it was put into the printers' hands, and for other substantial assistance in getting it published. I would also acknowledge my indebtedness to Mrs. Helen L. Fairchild for valuable material gathered from the correspondence of Judge Van der Kemp; to Mr. John W. Guiteau, Mr. F. M. Hollister and Mrs. Fairchild for aid in securing three full page portraits; to Mr. H. B. Philleo for the loan of a goodly batch of letters written to the Rev. I. B. Peirce; to the late F. W'. Guiteau for his Reminiscences and to the Rev. W. C. Gannett for the loan of portions of his father's private diary. The truth is, that al though the quantity of vice and misery actually existing is very considerable, there is nevertheless, upon the whole, a very great preponderance of good in general, and, with few, if any excep tions, in every individual in particular. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The South-Boston Unitarian Ordination We will only add, that there is a way of seeking to ih crease sectarian 'capital' which is not good; that it is unjust as well as ungenerous to attempt, even by insinuation or inter rogatory, to convey the idea that among freemen in Christ Jesus, one is responsible for the errors of another; and that whoever undertakes, directly or indirectly, to excite unfavorable prejudices in the community against a whole class of Christians by trumpeting the peculiarities of here and there an eccentric individual professing to belong to it, ought, at least, to be ashamed of himself.
