Book Synopsis Lower Ordovician trilobites of the Kirtonryggen Formation, Spitsbergen by : Richard A. Fortey
Download or read book Lower Ordovician trilobites of the Kirtonryggen Formation, Spitsbergen written by Richard A. Fortey and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph describes early Ordovician (Ibexian: Tremadocian–early Floian) trilobites from Northern Spitsbergen from the section through the Kirtonryggen Formation adjacent to Hinlopen Strait. The Formation is divided into three Members, each with distinct trilobites collectively representing the fullest known succession from the Bathyurid biofacies of the eastern Laurentian carbonate platform. Previous research on the Ordovician of Spitsbergen is summarised and correlations with similar faunas previously described from Canada, Greenland, western Newfoundland, Vermont–New York State, Oklahoma and Missouri are discussed. Taxonomic problems are discussed in detail leading to the recognition of 53 species, of which 15 are new, belonging to 31 genera including four new. Twenty-four taxa are described under open or tentative nomenclature. The lower Member yields the earliest known occurrences of the Illaenoidea, Proetoidea and Scutelluoidea, supporting the hypotheses relating the origin of new major clades to inshore habitats.
Book Synopsis Geology of the Appalachian—Caledonian Orogen in Canada and Greenland by : Harold Williams
Download or read book Geology of the Appalachian—Caledonian Orogen in Canada and Greenland written by Harold Williams and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 1995 with total page 951 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the Canadian Appalachian region. The chapter on the East Greenland Caledonides stands alone and there is no attempt to integrate the geological accounts of the two far removed regions. Rocks of the Canadian Appalachian region are described under four broad temporal divisions: lower Paleozoic and older, middle Paleozoic, upper Paleozoic, and Mesozoic. The rocks of these temporal divisions define geographic zones, belts, basins, and graben, respectively. The area is of special interest because so many modern concepts of mountain building are based on Appalachian rocks & structures.

This book was released on 2023-06-08 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ordovician was one of the longest of the geological periods, characterized by major magmatic and tectonic activity, an immense biodiversification, swings in climate and sea levels, and the first Phanerozoic mass extinction. ‘A Global Synthesis of the Ordovician System’ is presented in two volumes in The Geological Society, Special Publications. Whereas the first volume (SP532) concentrates on general aspects and a synthesis of the Ordovician geology of Europe, this volume (SP533) includes reviews of Ordovician successions of most other parts of the world. The classic successions of the Ordovician basins of North America are presented, as well as those of China where several of the Ordovician Global Boundary Stratotype Sections and Points are defined. The volume also includes syntheses of the Ordovician geology of Africa, South America, most regions of Asia from the Near to the Far East along with Central Asia, as well as Australia, New Zealand and Antarctica.

This book was released on 1991 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The area described in this study is located off the western coast of the north central Great Northern Peninsula of north-west Newfoundland. After an introduction on the geographic setting of the area, previous research, and the general geology & stratigraphy of the area, this report describes the area's Cambrian and Ordovician rock units, with information on their lithology, stratigraphic relationships, distribution, palaeontology, age, and depositional environment. This is followed by a section on geologic structure, including details of faults. The final section covers the area's economic geology and includes a history of mineral exploration, discussion of mineralization in Cambrian carbonates and in the St. George & Table Head groups, and data on industrial minerals (potassium-bearing shales, limestones, dolomites). The appendix contains descriptions of measured stratigraphic sections.
Book Synopsis Early Ordovician Trilobite Faunas of the Boat Harbour and Catoche Formations (St. George Group) in the Boat Harbour-Cape Norman Area, Great Northern Peninsula, Western Newfoundland by : William Douglas Boyce
Download or read book Early Ordovician Trilobite Faunas of the Boat Harbour and Catoche Formations (St. George Group) in the Boat Harbour-Cape Norman Area, Great Northern Peninsula, Western Newfoundland written by William Douglas Boyce and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a descriptive systematic paleontology presenting a taxonomic analysis of the trilobite faunas of the Boat Harbour and Catoche formations in the Boat Harbour-Cape Norman region, along with biostratigraphic aspects. The biostratigraphic aspects include the erection of a biostratigraphic zonation; the correlation of the trilobite faunas with those of the standard Ross (1951)-Hintze (1953) Ordovician trilobite zones of Utah-Nevada, and the classic deposits of the Canadian Series in New York-Vermont and Missouri-northern Arkansas; and the correlation of the Canadian stages proposed by Flower (1954) with the Ross-Hintze zones. Preliminary trilobite collections were obtained from the study area during the summer of 1976, with further collections obtained the following year. Simultaneously, a detailed bed-by-bed composite lithostratigraphic section was measured at Boat Harbour. During the summers of 1978, 1985 and 1987, the Boat Harbour section was revisited and certain problematical intervals were re-examined and sampled.

Download or read book Conodont Biofacies of Lower to Lower Middle Ordovician Megaconglomerates, Cow Head Group, Western Newfoundland written by Susanne Margarete Luise Pohler and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study contains a documentation of conodont biofacies deduced from fragments of the shelf margin facies to establish a biostratigraphic zonation and to determine conodont paleoecology of the inner marginal environment through the Arenig interval. Among clasts in the megaconglomerates, local (lower slope derived), foreign (shelf, shelf break, and upper slope derived), and older clasts were distinguished. About 300 conodont samples were collected and processed, mainly from clasts of the three conglomerate horizons. The 12,492 conodont specimens recovered represent 132 different form and multi-element species.
