To have interpreted one such literature and made it accessible to English-speaking people seems to me a sufficient result of a life. It seems, however, peculiarly appropriate that a history of Italian literature should follow and should precede other and parallel histories. Symonds himself had long before pointed out that no man, at least in a single work of moderate compass, can fully deserve the credit of having unlocked Italian literature. The study of Italian letters, he had reminded us, cannot be profitably pursued by itself. The literature of Italy requires to be constantly considered in connection with other litera tures, both those from which it is itself derived, and those which it has deeply influenced. But if Agamemnon was not the first of the world's heroes, neither Dante, nor even Tasso, was the last of Italy's poets. It is true that she ceased to lead the way in literature. Her best energies were absorbed in other directions. But during the eighteenth century there was a steady revival. Literature became more and more modem and drew closer and closer to life as national feeling developed. This was thoroughly awakened by the French Revolution and finally took definite shape with the restoration of Bourbon and Austrian rule in the peninsula. From that time national unity and independence became the ideal of all that was best in the country, and the artists and men of letters were among the most enthusiastic supporters of the cause. The Roman poets, dazzled by the brilliancy of their Athenian prototypes, fancied that only by imitating, could they hope to excel. A more unfortunate idea never took possession of a nation. It destroyed everything in their writings that was spontaneous and redolent of their native soil. Whatever is really endowed with life and intrinsic value in their works, has had to struggle into existence through the suffocating atmosphere of foreign fashions and foreign trains of thought. This evil was apparent in other branches of litera ture, but it was very far from injuring them as it injured poetry. Virgil was assuredly one of the greatest poets that ever lived, and yet how much of his poetry is second-hand, or, at best, adapted from others. The adaptations are Often executed with marvellous skill, but this fact only enhances our regret that he should have made Of his Eneid but an echo of Homer; and of his Eclogms but a repetition of Theocritus. His Georgia, indeed, escaped being only a decoction from Greek herbs, because in them he wrote of what he had actually seen and experienced, and they are, in truth, his masterpiece. It is natural, in preparation for intellectual creative work in any field, that a period of observation and absorption should precede creative activity. Composition, written or oral, as a feature of initial elementary instruction takes a large share of the student's time and energy, and leads to the commission of more errors, and consequently to the development of more discouragement and hostility, than any other part of the work. Furthermore, the practice of composition at the start gets the student into the habit of framing a foreign sentence as a succession of isolated words, with a laborious dependence on models and vocabularies, and leads to the formation of many erroneous first impres sions. Such linguistic tendencies are vicious in the extreme and are very hard to overcome. If on the other hand the composition be deferred until a considerable acquaintance with the foreign language itself has been attained, the student is able to deal with word groups instead of single words; he may draw freely upon a considerable store of linguistic experience instead of being tied to particular lists and examples; and he can compose with no great danger of excavating brain paths that lead only to red ink.
