Book excerpt: "The work traces the genesis and the growth of education in India through various socio-economic and political changes over a period of 5,000 years from 3000 B.C. to 1999 A.D. In ancient India, education, which emerged out of the Indian religious scriptures, contributed most to the development of a prosperous civilization and culture in the sub-continent. In medieval times the Muslim rulers replaced the existing systems of education by introducing their own education to meet the growing needs of a Muslim administration and of a Muslim community. And, when the British replaced the Muslims as rulers, they also instituted their own system of education to meet imperial requirements. The Hindu learning, which survived in the bordering Hindu kingdoms in medieval India, almost perished under the impact of Western learning. However, the Western education gave birth to a group of enlightened Indians who were able to free India from alien rule and since 1947 began to administer the country with the educational ideas and institutions left by the British, and despite occasional attempts by them to adjust the colonial system of education to Indian conditions, the hopes and aspirations of the nascent Indian nation remained unfulfilled and became further aggravated by the globalization of the Indian market in the last decade of twentieth century. Based on a careful and meticulous use of religious scriptures in ancient India to contemporary Persian work in medieval India, and of archival sources and private papers in modern India, the book is deemed to be the first authentic and comprehensive account of history of education in India."

It focuses on the legal, religious and ethical customs which were codified in this period and their impact on the social and political life of women. The volume analyzes texts such as the Dharma Sūtras, the Arthaśāstra, the Manu Smŗiti, the Yājňyavalkya Smŗiti, and Nārada Smŗiti, amongst others. It studies discourses on justice, conduct, virtues and duties, and how early laws were used to systematize patriarchy and the varna caste system in South Asia. It examines how patrimonial laws and male property rights highlighted social anxieties about female chastity and varna lineage, which led to the subordination of women and the lower varnas. These anxieties are most evident in codes from the late Vedic and early classical eras when diverse new settlers arrived upon the subcontinent. At this time, kings decentralized governance and allowed local groups to practice communal laws, while they meted out court justice with a specific law code. As the state became prosperous from trade conducted by merchants of diverse castes, sects, and classes, and social peace was ensured by officials from disparate backgrounds, kings began to rely upon a law code that aspired for equity above intolerance. These chapters examine heterodox Therāvada Buddhism and Jainism, their origins in the oligarchic state, their impact on the royal Sanskritic state, as seen in canonical literature. They especially focus on women’s roles in heterodox sects, and the emergence of new spaces for women, as such changes were adopted in disparate ways and degrees by other South Asian communities. The volume will be a useful resource for students and researchers of history, women and gender studies, social anthropology, sociology, and law. In recent decades, historical studies have moved away from rigid perspectives of singularity in origin and expansion; the emphasis now is on pluralities and long-term processes spanning centuries and millennia. There is also an influential school of thought which rejects antiquity claims such as these and holds that India is a construct of the colonial and nationalist imagination. In his radical reinterpretation of India's past, Manu V. Devadevan moves away from these reifying assessments to examine the evolution of institutions, ideas and identities that are characterized, typically, as Indian. In lieu of endorsing their Indianness, he traces their emergence to specific conditions that developed in India between 600 and 1200 CE, a period which historians now call the 'early medieval'.
