Book excerpt: Research has identified a group of students who do not begin to exhibit reading difficulties until fourth or fifth grade, suggesting late-emerging reading difficulties. Considering that these students do not show signs of reading difficulties in early grades, attempting to identify these students early becomes problematic. Additionally, little is known regarding the characteristics of late-emerging reading deficits within English language learner (ELL) populations. The purpose of this study was to examine the reading profiles of elementary-aged students identified as ELL who exhibit late-emerging reading difficulties. Data from three cohorts of Spanish-speaking ELL students (N=446) who were assessed on word level and comprehension reading skills in first through fifth grades were analyzed. The identification of late-emerging reading difficulties and the examination of reading profiles were examined using latent transition analysis in order to examine changes in profiles over time. Results suggested that ELL students exhibiting late-emerging reading difficulties displayed heterogeneous skill deficits (word level and comprehension deficits), displayed deficit patterns in word reading skills when measured with real words and adequate skill performance when measured with nonsense words, and had a higher probability of developing reading difficulties during the transition between second to third grade. Additional findings related to previous research in the area of late emerging reading difficulties with non-ELL students is discussed as well as implications for future research.

Book excerpt: This dissertation investigated the cross-linguistic development of metalinguistic and literacy skills in the period between kindergarten and 2nd grade in 71 Spanish-speaking English-language learners in two studies. The studies’ goals were to 1) describe the cross-linguistic relationships between kindergarten Spanish and English phonological awareness (PA) and letter identification and later 2nd grade morphological awareness (MA) skills and literacy outcomes as well as 2) explore a developmental, cross-linguistic model of metalinguistic and literacy development in Spanish-speaking ELLs in early elementary school. In the first study, Spanish PA performance in kindergarten accounted for the majority of variance in performance on four MA tasks. Overall, Spanish sound matching performance was the most reliable predictor of performance on all four MA tasks. In the second study, Spanish PA at the end of kindergarten was a significant direct longitudinal predictor of 2nd grade MA and an indirect predictor of spelling. English PA was a significant direct longitudinal predictor of 2nd grade English word reading and spelling. Within the model, Spanish PA was the only significant longitudinal predictor of MA, and English PA was the most significant predictor of spelling skill, overall. Taken together, the results can inform language and literacy assessment procedures for identifying Spanish-speaking ELLs at risk for poor academic outcomes by demonstrating how Spanish and English PA and letter identification skills in kindergarten differentially support accurate MA development, single word spelling, and single word reading.

Though there is a great diversity in both the distribution and degree of literacy in different countries, there has been an increasing awareness of the number of illiterates and the consequences of being illiterate. However, literacy is no longer seen as a universal trait. When one focuses on culturally-sensitive accounts of reading and writing practices, the concept of literacy as a single trait does not seem very feasible. A multiplicity of literacy practices can be distinguished which are related to specific cultural contexts and associated with relations of power and ideology. As such, literacy can be seen as a lifelong context-bound set of practices in which an individual's needs vary with time and place. This volume explores the use of literacy outside the mainstream in different contexts throughout the world. It is divided into four sections. Section 1 presents an anthropological perspective--analyzing the society and the individual in a society. Section 2 presents a psychological perspective--focusing on the individuals themselves and analyzing the cognitive and affective development of young children as they acquire literacy in their first and second languages.
