Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early History of Michigan With Biographies of State Officers: Members of Congress, Judges and Legislators This compilation was commenced by the Semi-Centennial Commission, and has been completed under the direction of Governor Luce, as provided by a law of the session of 1887. Many biographies have been condensed more than was desirable, to bring the volume within reasonable size; others are brief because full data could not be obtained. The other features of the work are brief. Several hundred sketches have not been written, and a full list of these names will be found at the close of the work. Of most no record could be obtained. Of those living many failed to answer letters of inquiry. In other cases promised aid has not been given. Thanks are tendered to those who have taken time and trouble to give information. The compiler is also indebted to county histories, Farmers history of Detroit, and other works for information of value. Most of the Wayne county sketches were furnished by S. B. McCracken. The history is a portion of that written by the compiler for the Michigan census of 1884. The object of the work, to preserve in compact form the record of Statesmen, Judges, and Legislators of Michigan, will be more and more appreciated with the lapse of time. There are errors no doubt, but the information is from the best attainable sources. It is a just tribute by the people of Michigan to the memory of those who, under Territorial and State rule, have made Michigan one of the greatest and best States in the Union. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many Civil War reference books exist, there is no single compendium that contains important details about the combatant states (and territories) that Civil War researchers can readily access for their work. People looking for information about the organizations, activities, economies, demographics, and prominent personalities of Civil War states and state governments must assemble data from a variety of sources, with many key sources remaining unavailable online. This volume provides a crucial reference book for Civil War scholars and historians, professional or amateur, seeking information about New York during the war. Its principal sources include the Official Records, state adjutant general reports, legislative journals, state and federal legislation, executive speeches and proclamations on the federal and state levels, and the general and special orders issued by the military authorities of both governments, North and South. Designed and organized for easy use, this book can be read in two ways: by individual state, with each chapter offering a stand-alone history of an individual state's war years; or across states, comparing reactions to the same event or solutions to the same problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hard-fighting 11th Michigan Volunteer Infantry was recruited from sparsely settled southwest Michigan shortly after the Civil War broke out. Mainly composed of young farmers and tradesmen, the regiment rapidly evolved into one of the Army of the Cumberland's elite combat units, tenaciously fighting its way through some of the war's bloodiest engagements. This book--featuring a complete unit roster--chronicles the regiment through the words of the veterans, tracing their development from a rabble of idealists into a fine-tuned fighting machine that executed successful bayonet charges against superior numbers. The narrative continues into the postwar period, discussing the ex-soldiers' careers through Reconstruction and the Gilded Age. Photographs, maps, illustrations and a statistical analysis round out the work.
