Book excerpt: "Shortly after the turn of the century discoveries by a Shoshone prospector in the barren central Nevada deserts ignited the last great goldrush on the Western mining frontier. Prospectors, miners, stock promoters, gamblers, camp followers, roughs, lawmen, and anarchists, among others, converged upon this unlikely plot of sand and joshua trees from every corner of the earth. The saga that ensued is first-rate. It tells the story of ordinary people - their everyday lives, hopes, loves, and dilemmas - as well as the fates of the newly crowned nabobs, who could wager a fortune on the turn of a roulette wheel." ""Hell-roaring Goldfield" passed through the same stages of boom, industrialization, and decline as its mining-camp predecessors, but with some significant differences. Greed knew no bounds, waves of epidemic disease and violent death swept the city, mining stock speculation reached new heights, and the tycoon who rose to the top - the ruthless ex-gambler George Wingfield - dominated Nevada for years to come. In other ways as well, the last boomtown cast a long shadow over the future. Goldfield played a key role in the nineteenth-century mining boom that reversed twenty years of depression and decline in a severely depopulated state and assured the triumph of mining camp ideology over other value systems. Along with its careless bravado, that ideology meant unfettered individualism and the primacy of materialism over moral values. It meant a restless search for excitement in the saloons, forerunners of today's casinos and second only to the mines in economic importance. Above all, it meant getting rich and getting out, leaving others to pay the price."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

Book excerpt: The mining town of Goldfield was booming as early Nevada women settlers relocated from eastern parts of the country, bringing with them a desire for a more civilized west. These women brought with them culture and a desire to document early history of the fledgling state of Nevada. They established community and philanthropic organizations including the Daughters of the American Revolution. For the past one hundred years, Nevada women built on the framework laid in Goldfield, Nevada in 1910. Many great works have been accomplished. This is the story of the Nevada DAR and the women who work to promote patriotism, preserve American and Nevada history, and secure America's future through better education for our children.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meet the prospectors, forlorn widows, and other spirits who haunt the historic remnants of Nevada's former boomtowns—includes photos! In the throes of early financial disaster, the Silver State had little to entice newcomers—or discourage residents from leaving. Jim Butler’s silver discovery at Tonopah changed everything. With a subsequent gold discovery near Goldfield, the rush was on, and from these burgeoning mines, Nevada’s early leaders amassed their wealth and power. In this fascinating book, paranormal historian Janice Oberding shares firsthand accounts of ghostly encounters in the Goldfield and Mizpah Hotels and uncovers the history behind the mysterious cowboy ghost, the haggard hitchhiker, and other eerie local tales.

Book excerpt: Goldfield, Nevada, isn't much of a city these days. With somewhere around 200 or 300 residents, it's home to a couple of small motels, two saloons, a Dinky Diner (that's what it's called), and not even a single gas station - unless you count the handful of abandoned stations and garages in town. There are a lot of abandoned buildings there, because at one time, Goldfield WAS a city. And not just any city, but the largest city in Nevada. Back in 1906, more than 20,000 people lived there, compared with maybe half that many in Reno. Goldfield hadn't even existed four years earlier, but it got very big very fast thanks to the discovery of gold in the area. It didn't stay that way long, though. Like other boomtowns, the mines eventually dried up, and most of the townsfolk moved on, looking for greener (or more golden) pastures. But during its heyday, Goldfield had it all: saloons and tycoons, gunmen and prospectors, the fanciest hotel between Kansas City and San Francisco, and even a deputy named Earp. It also had boxing's biggest promoter: a local saloon owner named Tex Ricard who later owned Madison Square Garden but got his start staging the first "fight of the century" right there in Goldfield.A bicycle messenger named Jim Casey got his start in Goldfield, too. He went on to start a company called UPS. Illustrated with more than 150 images, "Goldfield Century" is the story of a Nevada boomtown, and not just any boomtown, but one of the last and one of the biggest. Goldfield was at the center of a region consumed by gold fever, where fortunes were made and lost in mines and saloon tables from Tonopah south to Beatty and Rhyolite - once a city of 8,000 people, but now a ghost town of crumbling buildings. Take a trip through the glory days of the Nevada frontier at the turn of the 20th century, when the bonanzas were big, the talk was bigger, the booms were unbelievable, and the busts were inevitable. Relive the Goldfield century.

Book excerpt: Maintaining the same high standards of the first edition, published in 1973, this new, revised edition is still the most comprehensive one-volume history of a state that was once thought of as "a bridge to somewhere else." In revising, Elliott summarizes the state's economic, political, and social history since 1973 and strengthens a major point he made then: that Nevada's acceptance of liberal marriage and divorce laws and of legalized gambling brought economic stability to a state singularly devoid of stable economic resources. -- from Book Jacket

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Placer Gold Deposits of Nevada Following the discovery of placers at Gold Canyon, placer discoveries in Nevada were broadly in three periods: the 1860's to 1880's, when many small deposits throughout the State were discovered and sporadically worked and several large placers were discovered and extensively worked; the short period between 1906 and 1910, when very rich placers were dis covered at Lynn, Battle Mountain, Manhattan, and Round Mountain; the early 1930's, when economic conditions created by the depression caused a renewed interest in placer mining, and many individuals sought, and a few discovered, new placer areas throughout the State. The location of the placers described in this report is shown on plate 1. Very little factual information can be found about the early periods of placer mining in Nevada. For many placers, the only reports available are hearsay estimates of production and speculations about the extent of the placer ground based on remnants of placer pits, shafts, and other workings. Many of the placers said to have had a high production between 1860 and 1890 were worked by Chinese miners who came to Nevada dur ing the building of the railroads and stayed on to work at mining and other activities. The Chinese were reputed to be secretive with their earnings from the placers and did not ship the gold to the mint by Wells Fargo or other shippers. They worked the gravels very thoroughly in areas where American miners did not wish to expend great labor to win the gold. The placers in the Sierra and Spring Valley districts, Pershing County, were worked by Chinese miners; they have a very high estimated production before 1900 and a comparatively low known production since that time.
