In the modern age new vistas of this type of divine worship have been opened up with the advent of Sri Ramakrishna whose life and spiritual practices have taught humankind not only to look upon God as Mother of the Universe but also to realize Her as residing in the hearts of all, especially women. His divine consort, Sri Sarada Devi, was looked upon as a special manifestation of that Mother of the Universe and is literally adored by countless devotees. She was the Mother of the virtuous and the wicked, humans and sub-humans. Evolution of Mother Worship in India traces the growth of this ideal as embodied in some of its well-known characters in Indian history and literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Agrawala S Present Work Largely Represents His Ph.D. Thesis (Approved By The Banaras Hindu University) In A Revised Up-To-Date Form. He Has Brought Out A Most Comprehensive And Thorough Analysis Of The Material On The Worship Of Goddesses In The Proto-Historic And Vedic Periods Of India. A Vast Amount Of Archaeological Evidence Is Carefully Sifted And Analysed By Him In A Truer Cultic Perspective As Throwing New Light On The Role Of Mother-Goddesses In The Protohistoric Cultures Ranging From Small Agricultural Communities Of Baluchistan Foothills To The Highly Developed Harappans. Dr. Agrawala Has Also Identified And Discussed In A Systematic Manner Varied Motifs And Concepts Of Fertility Cultus In The Rgveda And Later Vedic Texts Which Were Subsequently Formulated Into Definite Images, Personifications And Attributes. He Has Marshalled In A Fully Objective Treatment All Those References In The Vedic Literature That Go Now To Reveal Numerous Fresh Aspects Of This Hitherto Unexplored Subject. One Is Able Indeed To See Through The Present Work How The Rgvedic Goddesses,Mostly Abstractions, Later On Assumed Mythical Definitions In The Pantheon And How The Folk Culture Of India Exercised Its Far-Reaching Influences On Higher Priestly Religion Not Only By Contributing Its Own Share Of Goddesses But Also Through Their More Concrete Identification With The Already Existing Ones In Myths And Cult Rituals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mother Goddess has been worshiped in India for at least three thousand years. Although often known as 'Mata' or 'Devi', she is also known by a myriad of names, with every village having its own local manifestation. Her devotees have established a rich tradition of ritual, lore and song. However few English-speaking people know the details of Indian goddess worship. Dr Chandola combines her north Indian origins with her training in anthropology to provide a unique insight into the millennia-old beliefs, lore, songs, pilgrimages and rituals. Even within India few people have direct experience of the trance rituals associated with goddess worship. During these seemingly-impossible acts are accomplished, such as licking red-hot metal without causing injury. Dr Chandola attended several of these trance rituals and provides a dramatic account of licking a red-hot metal ladle without harm. Some aspects of traditional Indian goddess worship have been known about in the West for over 200 years. Indeed, in a very confused way, this knowledge underlies modern pagans' veneration of a Great Goddess. Some modern pagans also seek trance states - although few, if any, with the dramatic consequences of these north Indian traditions! The final section of the book looks at how these traditional beliefs are adapting in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, both within Indian and among international Hindu communities. Entranced by the Goddess is essential reading for all those interested in Hinduism - both traditional and modern-day - or goddess worship - whether Indian or Western.
