The majority of the people of this city do not know that they ever read five lines of his writing. Yet it is without hesitation that I say that the life of every person in Brooklyn is to-day affected, and it is affected for good, by the life and the words of this Yankee prophet of the latter half of the nineteenth century. Bierut is widely considered the finest observer on design writing today. Covering topics as diverse as Twyla Tharp and ITC Garamond, Bierut's intelligent and accessible texts pull design culture into crisp focus. He touches on classics, like Massimo Vignelli and the cover of The Catcher in the Rye, as well as newcomers, like McSweeney's Quarterly Concern and color-coded terrorism alert levels. Along the way Nabakov's Pale Fire; Eero Saarinen; the paper clip; Celebration, Florida; the planet Saturn; the ClearRx pill bottle; and paper architecture all fall under his pen. His experience as a design practitioner informs his writing and gives it truth. In Seventy-nine Short Essays on Design, designers and nondesigners alike can share and revel in his insights.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays in Criticism: First Series Several of the Essays which are here collected and reprinted had the good or the bad fortune to be much criticised at the time of their first appearance. I am not now going to inflict upon the reader a reply to those criticisms for one or two explanations which are desirable, I shall elsewhere, perhaps, be able some day to find an opportunity; but, indeed. It is not in my nature, - some of my critics would rather say, not in my power, - to dispute on behalf of any Opinion, even my own, very obstinately. To try and approach truth on one side after another, not to strive or cry, nor to persist in pressing forward, on any one side, with violence and self-will, - it is only thus, it seems to me, that mortals may hope to gain any vision of the mysterious Goddess, whom we shall never see except in outline, but only thus even in outline. He who will do nothing but fight impetu ously towards her on his own, one, favourite, parti cular line, is inevitably destined to run his head into the folds of the black robe in which she is wrapped. I should have thought that the last, containing writings at once more mature and on the whole on fresher subjects, would have been the favourite of the three. But I must take facts as I find them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Occasional Essays The essays published in this volume are, for the most part, reprints of papers written at different times during the past fifteen years. The reader will no doubt perceive that one or two of them are somewhat -early productions and need a little indulgence. The contrast between the two papers on America, is explained by the fact that the first reflected the dark hues that tinged the political firmament before the out break of the civil war, whereas the second caught the glow of patriotism which prevailed in the Northern States for some time after the conclusion of that contest. Looking from our present stand-point, we should say that the first took too dark, the second too bright a view of American institutions politic have indeed relapsed into a state of corruption which appears to be chronic in that country, but the forces for good which abide in the social and religious life of the people, will neutralise in great measure the evils that cling to its political system. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collected Essays The apology offered in the Preface to the first volume of this series for the occurrence of repeti tions, is even more needful here I am afraid. But it could hardly be otherwise with speeches and essays, on the same topic, addressed at intervals, during more than thirty years, to widely distant and different hearers and readers. The oldest piece, that On the Educational Value of the Natural History Sciences, contains some crudities, which I repudiated when the lecture was first reprinted, more than twenty years ago; but it will be seen that much of what I have had to say, later on in life, is merely a development of the propositions enunciated in this early and sadly imperfect piece of work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays, Reviews, and Addresses The following papers are divided into volumes according to subject, and, within each volume, disposed in the order of time; the former, to facilitate reference; the latter, to preserve the clue of literary history. They thus form, as a whole, an autobiographical commentary on the larger systematic writings for which they have gradually prepared the way. Running as they do through the changes of thre score years, they can lay no claim to logical consistency. I can only hope that beneath the varying complexion of their thought some intelligible moral continuity may be traced, leading in the end to a View of life more coherent and less defective than was presented at the beginning. Most of the papers being strictly occasional, that is, rela tive to the events and ideas of their time, have interest, if at all, as reproducing some vanished aspect of public senti ment or social movement. They are left, therefore, to speak the feeling of their day, without any attempt, by soften ing its ignorances or removing its misjudgments, to correct it to the standard of the present intellectual latitude. A few very early essays have been excluded, as too pervasively steeped in the spirit of a discarded philosophy; but else, papers have been marked for rejection only where the interest was obsolete, or not desirable to revive. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays, Critical and Political, Vol. 1 The essays here collected were written many years ago, but they are concerned with matters - such as the merits of great writers - which never grow old. It is on that ground I have thought it worth while reprinting them. In each case I have given the date of the earlier publication that any of their contem porary references may be understood. The prisoner who was asked if he had anything to say why sen tence should not be passed on him for the crime of which he had been convicted, said that he hoped his lordship would take into consideration the youth of his counsel. It would be foolish to claim that these essays were early essays, and therefore en titled to clement criticism. The judgments expressed were the opinions of a younger man than the writer of this preface, as the dates frequently show, but although the latter might alter some of the criticisms, he on the whole agrees with these more youthful utterances. He has to thank the manager of the Times for his permission to reproduce two of the essays con. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. He has described in his dutobiography how, during his term of'ojtice as Professor in the Royal College of Mauritius from 1861 to 1867, he was thrown in contact with colleagues who stimulated in him the desire to become thoroughly acquainted with French literature. In consequence he read French widely and deeply, and on his return to England made a start in his career as a man of letters by contributing essays upon his chosen subject to various magazines. These papers - a selec tion of which are published here, while others have appeared in volume form previously - attracted con siderable attention by their display of sympathetic knowledge, and secured for their author a position among his brother writers before the publication of fiction obtained for him popular recognition. Nothing is so hard to deal with as a period. Nothing is so nu manageable as a date. People will be born a few years too early; they will live a few years too long. Events will happen out of time. The closely linked decades refuse to be separated, and my half-century, that I thought so com pact, widened imperceptibly while I wrote. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Early Female Novelists, and Other Essays In the history of English story-telling an altogether notable place is occupied by Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. They are remarkable not only as masterpieces of narrative, but as containing both description of incidents and delineation of manners; not only as triumphs of literary expression, but as giving artistic form both to the romance of chivalry and to the tale of common life. Wholly wonderful it is that at so early a period such directness of movement and perfection of style, such vividness of portraiture and realism of incident, are found in verse, while centuries pass before similar excellences are found in prose. It is, indeed, peculiarly interesting to contrast Chaucer's practice with the subsequent course of English fiction. The analogy of nature, common sense, the experience of man kind, crystallized in proverbs, and all the digui fied and honored usage of our human societies ranged themselves on their side. And yet, we did not rest in the peace which they had made. Their contemporary, Garrison, the abolitionist, must have known that all these things were against him; he must have felt how harshly the strife he brought into our Republic of wel fare and opportunity broke in upon the soft music which ears like Choate's were harking for. Nevertheless, he went on: and soon there was war and death and mourning in the land. Some said that the outcome proved compromise a fail ure; more said, it was the fault of Garrison and of the other extremists on both sides. There was peace again, at last: a sure peace for the Republic; surer and deeper for some hundreds of' thousands of young men in blue and gray uniforms, mourned a while by their young wives and sweethearts, -mourned without ceasing by dim-eyed mothers. The end of compromise and the end of warfare were the same. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
