Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Days at Red River Settlement, and Fort Snelling: Reminiscences of Mrs. Ann Adams, 1821-1829 After some time of enduring these hardships, my father heard of a place down the river some ways, where we would doubtless fare better, and had us taken there in dog Sleds. We were two days in going there, and had to camp out at night, in the snow, with nothing to eat but buffalo broth. The place to which we went, was a trading post. There was a house there, where the owner rented us one room, in which we lived the balance of the winter. We had' nothing to sleep on but buffalo robes, but we had abundance of food, and thus got along very well. The cold now began to be intense. It was said to be the severest winter known for years. At night the trees would crack, with the fierce cold, like the reports of guns. But we passed the rest of the winter without any serious discomfort. This book was released on 2013 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everything went wrong. Having crossed the Atlantic for about 3 months and getting stuck in the ice of Hudson's Strait for another three weeks, the band of Swiss emigrants had to row with great hardship up the Hayes River over some 6o portages, and cross Lake Winnipeg in its full length. Arriving starved, exhausted, and deprived of their belongings at the Red River Settlement just before the snows, they were told that nothing had been prepared for them. Lodging and food was there none due to a plague of grasshoppers and floods that had destroyed the harvests of the previous four years. The so-called Promised Land was bare of any prospect. Thoroughly embittered and disgusted, one family after the other headed south between 1821 and 1826, some alone, others in groups, hoping to reach present day Minnesota as their first refuge. But to get there they had to cross over some 350 miles of prairie, a veritable desert of uncharted trails and water holes, peopled by roving Sioux looking out for victims to scalp. How did they survive? That's what the reader will find out by reading this dramatic document, which is illustrated by Peter Rindisbacher, the young artist who participated in this extraordinary venture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In a style that is clear, unhurried and . . . vigorous, Francis P. Prucha has written a definitive study of [the] frontier army that was itself a pioneer. It pushed the line of occupation far beyond settlements. It raised crops, herded cattle, cut timber, quarried stone, built sawmills and performed the manifold duties of pioneers. It restrained lawless traders, pursued fugitives, ejected squatters, maintained order during peace negotiations and guarded Indians who came to receive annuities."--New York Times Book Review. "A work of original research which stands almost alone in relating the Army's work to the peaceful processes of territorial expansion and social development. Studying the thirteen army posts established in Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, and northern Illinois, the author demonstrates their importance for Indian and land policy administration, as cash markets for the early settlers, and as centers of exploration, road-building, and cultural developments."--A Guide to the Study of the United States of America. "Well-written. . . . a significant contribution to the study of . . . both the westward movement and our military establishment."--Mississippi Valley Historical Review. Known for his books about American Indian government policy and the frontier army, Francis Paul Prucha, S.J., is an emeritus professor of history at Marquette University. Introducing this edition is Edward M. Coffman, a professor of history at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and the author of The Old Army: A Portrait of the American Army in Peacetime, 1784?1898.
