Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive study of more than 200 years of the shared and interconnected histories of Greek-Albanian relations, a field of inquiry that has not attracted the international scholarly attention it deserves. The book presents and analyses in detail topics including the contested borderland (1800–1912), the Greek Revolution (1821–1830) and Greek- Albanian entanglements during the Greek Revolution, Greek nationalism (identity and narrative), the Albanians (pre-modernism, belated nationalism, origin), the rise of Albanian nationalism, Albanian national identity and historical narrative, Greek-Albanian relations from the League of Prizren (1878) until Albania’s declaration of independence (1912), Greek irredentism (the "Northern Epirus Question", 1912–1920) and Albania’s precarious independence, Greek irredentism and Greek-Albanian relations (the "Northern Epirus Question", 1940–1971), the Greek minority in Albania, the Cham (Muslim Albanian) issue, the turbulent first part of the 1990s, the pending Greek-Albanian issues, and public opinion. It concludes with a road map for an eventual Albanian-Greek reconciliation. This volume will interest scholars and students of Southeastern Europe (Balkans), international relations and history, political science and sociology. It will also be a valuable resource for diplomats, journalists, think tanks and other organizations and institutions involved in the Balkans Greek-Albanian relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full account of a country that, following decades of isolation, has undergone unprecedented changes to its political system: the collapse of communism, the progression to multi-party elections and the upheaval that followed the March 1997 uprising. Miranda Vickers traces the history of the Albanian people from the Ottoman period to the formation of the Albanian Communist Party. She considers the charismatic leadership of Enver Hoxha; Albania's relationship with Tito and the alliance with the Soviet Union and then China; and the long period of isolation. Newly revised for this paperback edition, The Albanians considers the gradual process of reform and the fragility of the Albanian experiment with democracy, and includes a dramatic account of the days leading up to Sali Berisha's resignation of the presidency. It has now been updated to cover the fight for independence in Kosovo and the progress of Albania's application to join the EU.

Book excerpt: Nationalism remains one of the key political, societal, and sociopsychological phenomena in contemporary Europe. Its significance for the justification of state policies and the stability of political systems, particularly in the context of advanced democracies, and its significance for people's basic needs for a political and cultural identity and a sense of national pride continue to challenge scholars. The international scholars assembled in this edited collection suggest that the use of three perspectives--supranationalism, boundary-making nationalism, and regional nationalism--may be promising as an explanatory framework for the analysis of nationalism in Europe. The book's contributors distance themselves from older dichotomies such as civic and ethnic nationalism and questions the one-sided normativity of nationalism, in particular in the concept of liberal nationalism. It argues that a promising approach to contemporary nationalism should reflect the multiplicity of nationalism. The volume is a collection of studies by a multinational group of authors with backgrounds in Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Germany, Latvia, New Zealand, Poland, Spain, Ukraine and the United States.

Book excerpt: Just after World War I Bert Brown served his engineering apprenticeship at the Eastleigh Railway Works. Afterwards he and three friends joined Saunders refurbishing bombers For The RAF on the Isle of Wight. Later Bert moved to Supermarine to work with R. Mitchell to build the S6, S6A and S6B Schneider Trophy winning floatplanes. Then he went to Short Brothers at Rochester as Chief Inspector of Flying Boats until the war started. In 1940 Bert was sent to Cambridge as Chief Inspector to run a repair organisation called Sebro that was responsible for repairing and rebuilding the Stirling four-engine bombers. They ended up making airworthy over one thousand military aircraft for both the RAF and USAAF. Sebro was to prove how badly the RAF command had planned for war and aircraft repair. In some ways this is still one of the RAF's failures. Bert developed close relationships with the RAF pilots and his engineers that remained For The rest of their lives. His success was so great that the Germans tried to kill him and destroy Sebro on a number of occasions. Luckily they failed. This book is a tribute to Bert Meakins and all aeronautical engineers who have made and still make flying safer for all of us.
