Book excerpt: A thrilling novel of military lives—and loves—as USAF pilots ignite the engines of their F-15 Eagles and take to the skies. They are intoxicating seductresses willing to do anything—absolutely anything—for love; however, these women can't rival the military aspirations of their men. The women try to fill the holes left in their hearts, but how much longer can they survive loneliness and rejection? How do they take possession of their men's hearts, hearts that only have room for the liberating expanse of the sky? The only way they can reach their stuck-in-the-clouds men is to use illicit affairs, sinful seduction, and murder—to fly like EAGLES.
Download or read book Eagle written by Janine Rogers and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2014-10-15 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A symbol of power, divinity, war, and justice, the eagle has been one of the most dominant birds in the human imagination for millennia. Exploring the rich history of this bird and its portrayal in art, film, literature, and poetry, this book examines how eagles became an emblematic creature that also embodies the paradoxes of our existence. Janine Rogers reveals that while humans associate eagles with light and learning, they also connect the birds to death and corruption. Eagles adorn flags, crests, and other emblems, but as she shows, they have also been relentlessly persecuted and perceived as predatory threats to livestock. While considering these contradictions, Rogers argues that eagles have suffered from the effects of human activities for years, from pesticide use to habitat destruction and global warming. She demonstrates the dangers of not saving eagles from destruction, as they are key to controlling pest populations and clearing carcasses. Featuring many illustrations of eagles in the wild, art, and popular culture, Eagle shines new light on our complex relationship with these birds, their international significance, and the dire implications of losing them to contemporary ecological threats.

Download or read book The Eagle Watchers written by Ruth Tingay and published by Comstock Publishing Associates. This book was released on 2011-01-15 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eagles have fascinated humans for millennia. For some, the glimpse of a distant eagle instantly becomes a treasured lifelong memory. Others may never encounter a wild eagle in their lifetime. This book was written by people who have dedicated years to the study of eagles, to provide an insider's view for all readers, but especially those who have never been up close and personal with these magnificent yet often misunderstood creatures. In their stories, twenty-nine leading eagle researchers share their remarkable field experiences, providing personal narratives that don't feature in their scientific publications. They tell of their fear at being stalked by grizzly bears, their surprise at being followed by the secret police, their embarrassment when accidentally firing mortar rockets over a school gymnasium, and their sense of awe at tracking eagles via satellite. The reader experiences the cultural shock of being guest of honor at a circumcision ceremony, the absurdity of sharing an aquatic car with the Khmer Rouge, and the sense of foreboding at being press-ganged into a frenzied tribal death march through the jungle. The Eagle Watchers covers twenty-four species on six continents, from well known (bald eagle; golden eagle), to obscure (black-and-chestnut eagle; New Guinea harpy eagle), and from common (African fish eagle) to critically endangered (Philippine eagle; Madagascar fish eagle). The diverse experiences vividly described in this book reveal the passion, dedication, and sense of adventure shared by those who study these majestic birds and strive for their conservation. Featuring stunning color photographs of the eagles, information on raptor conservation, a global list of all eagle species with ranges and conservation status, and a color map of the sites visited in the book, The Eagle Watchers will appeal to birders, conservationists, and adventure travelers alike. To further support the conservation programs described in this book, all royalties are being donated to two leading nonprofit organizations for raptor conservation training and fieldwork: Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Intern Program and the National Birds of Prey Trust.

Download or read book Eagles Ascending written by Mark Megehee and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-08-27 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eagles Ascending begins with the union of two petty states, the Mark of Brandenburg and the Duchy of Prussia in 1618, which led at the end of the 17th Century to the Kingdom of Prussia in a dizzying rise of political and military power in less than a century. Before there could be Frederick The Great, there had to be Frederick Wilhelm, "The Great Elector." This fascinating account traces the origins and rise to dominance of Brandenburg-Prussia across the 17th Century, and introduces readers to the remarkable men who laid the foundations for the later German Empire, it's Army and Navy. Information, much of it appearing in English for the first time, makes the "mover and shakers" of a distant era spring to life, their portrayals made more compelling by superb period artwork, maps, and plans. Here are the wars, battles and leaders who by land and sea shaped the emergence from medieval to modern Germany. The lively narrative is enhanced by twenty-six original full color plates specifically researched for this work detailing the development of the uniforms of Brandenburg-Prussia in the century in which modern military uniforms began. Tactics, and the ever more sophisticated weapons which determined them in the 17th Century, are detailed as well. Conflicts such as the Scanian War, the First Northern War, and the War of the League of Augsburg, mark the progression of Brandenburg-Prussia from weakling to king maker status. Orders of battle, ship plans, period and new battle maps contribute to this splendid foray into the history of a proto-nation rising to greatness in a century more violent even than our own. Complete with footnotes, bibliography, and thoroughly indexed, this book fills a void in English language literature of the military roots and first "Blitkriegs" of German Armies to come. Historians, war gamers, modelers, painters of military miniatures, and even the casual reader will find Eagles Ascending a compelling introduction to a distant time, yet one that affected the shape of the world to this day.
Book Synopsis Servants of Evil by : Bob Carruthers
Download or read book Servants of Evil written by Bob Carruthers and published by Zenith Imprint. This book was released on 2004-12 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History, they say, is written by the victors, and to date that has certainly been true of World War II. What few German accounts do exist are, furthermore, generally written by those in positions of authority, not by the soldiers and airmen who fought in the front line. Servants of Evil shows us, for the first time, the Second World War as seen from "the other side" — by the boys and men who went to war believing in the Reich and in victory, only to see the myth of German invincibility crumble in the face of supposed impossibilities: the fighting ability and determination of the Russians; the strength of the Royal Air Force; the defeat of the U-boats by improved radar technology; the might and remarkable manufacturing capability of the USA — and, finally, the fall of Berlin.

Book Synopsis The Great Eagles by : Michael O'Neal Campbell
Download or read book The Great Eagles written by Michael O'Neal Campbell and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-05-19 with total page 1666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the current literature and knowledge on the evolution and ecology of all the birds named as eagles, with particular emphasis on the larger species. It also examines the past and current relations between eagles and people, including habitat change and conservation issues. Eagle ecologies and conservation are currently seriously impacted by human activities such as industrialization, urbanization, pollution, deforestation and hunting. Some eagle species have consequently experienced extreme population changes. There are, however, some positive developments. Eagles have a strong, historic bond with human civilization, due to their status as the world’s most charismatic birds. Conservation policies have also been successful in repopulating some ecosystems with breeding eagles. Therefore, despite the complexity of this relationship, there may yet be hope for this unique species group, frequently rated as the kings of birds, and symbolic of human power, ambition, royalty, nationality, and even concepts of God. It is hoped that this book will contribute to the further understanding of these unique and fantastic birds.

Book Synopsis War Drama of the Eagles by : Edward Fraser
Download or read book War Drama of the Eagles written by Edward Fraser and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2011-07-27 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eagle of Napoleon was a potent symbol of military might, men fought and died to possess the “cou-cou” that his regiments carried into battle. It represented the fidelity of a regiment to the cause of the French Empire, and more particularly the attachment of the brave warriors who fought beneath it to the greatest general of the age. To lose an eagle was to lose the honour of the regiment, a stain that could not be removed apart from rare cases of exceptional service. Edward Fraser chronicles the history of the Napoleonic eagle standard and the men who fought under them and against them until the final demise of the Napoleonic era after Waterloo in 1815. Napoleon was well aware of how to stimulate the esprit de corps of his armies with symbols and continuing his innovation of giving distinct standards to specific regiments and recording battle honours on them from his time with the army of Italy, he decided on giving each battalion or squadron and eagle based on his own imperial insignia. The eagle of the battalion was the rallying point for the men in adversity, and a stimulant on the attack guiding the men toward their objective. Napoleon’s enemies knew the power and cachet of capturing such a standard and fought hard to capture them on battlefields ranging from Borodino outside Moscow to the hot plains outside Cadiz in Spain. Fraser was a prominent historian of the period having written a number of books on the great battle of Trafalgar and Wellington’s soldiers in the Peninsula. This work was written just before the outbreak of the First World War, with the Entente Cordiale in place, and is therefore more balanced than some of the earlier English works on the period which tended to a more anti-French view.
