What tools and techniques can principals employ to maximize student achievement? Walter Peddy’s Lift for Principals is a guide that supports educational leaders in the mission to impact the world student by student, teacher by teacher. Through its parable story of Colby, principal of a struggling school, whose personal origins were supported through his grandfather who raised him, Lift offers insight and inspiration to those in the educational field. Applying the parable of Colby to leadership principles, Peddy offers an in-depth guide to leadership methods, and equips readers with the tools, techniques, and decision-making strategies needed to lift their organization and personal leadership skills from good to great. “When Dr. Peddy talks about ‘lifting’ he is talking about caring, coaching, and having the courage necessary to help people be the best they can be. Anybody that has a team needs to read this book and learn how to ‘lift’ using the 3Cs!” —Damon West, keynote speaker and bestselling author of The Coffee Bean

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schwarz, founder of the groundbreaking Citizen Schools program, shares his vision for reducing inequality by pairing successful adults with low-income students. Parental wealth now predicts adult success more than at any point in the last hundred years. And yet as debates about education rage on, and wealth-based achievement gaps grow, too many people fix the blame on one of two convenient scapegoats: poverty or our public schools. But in fact, low-income kids are learning more now than ever before. The real culprit for rising inequality, Eric Schwarz argues in The Opportunity Equation, is that wealthier kids are learning much, much more—mostly outside of school. In summer camps, robotics competitions, sessions with private tutors, and conversations around the dinner table, children from more affluent families build the skills and social networks that propel them to success. In The Opportunity Equation, Schwarz tells the story of how he founded the pioneering Citizen Schools program to combat rising inequality by bringing these same opportunities to children who don’t have access to them. By increasing learning time in schools and harnessing the power of an army of volunteers with various skills and professional backgrounds—lawyers, engineers, carpenters, journalists, nonprofit leaders, and grandmothers who sew—Citizen Schools offers after-school apprenticeships that provide the building blocks for adult success. Recounting the triumphs and setbacks he’s encountered in implementing the program, Schwarz shows that some of the nation’s lowest-performing schools in its lowest-income cities can, with help, provide their students with many of the same experiences wealthy communities afford to their children. The results have been proven: in the dozen school districts, from New York to Oakland, that have partnered with Citizen Schools, rates of attendance, proficiency, graduation, and college acceptance have gone up—and the achievement gap closes. At a time when many stakeholders in the education debates are looking for new, silver-bullet shortcuts to educational excellence, Schwarz shows that the best solution is human-centered, rooted in the American tradition of citizen voluntarism, and, most important, achievable. We can provide quality education for all students and close the opportunity gap in this country—and we can do it together.

Book excerpt: We have all been affected by violence, intimidation, and bullying to some degree. Children are especially vulnerable to the lasting pain and trauma of these experiences. When we give them the tools and understanding to become assertive and self-aware, however, bullying can become a blessing in disguise: a powerful opportunity for personal growth. Choosing to respond to bullying mindfully, in spite of their fears, is the beginning of a journey into true freedom. We can coach our children awareness of bullying dynamics, and teach them the social and emotional skills to thrive in a world where bullies have always existed. With our help, our children can develop the confidence, courage, and knowledge to alter their experiences and excel in life. Bully Proof, The Gift of Self-Esteem provides parents, educators, and coaches with concepts and practical strategies to help guide children on the path to letting go of fear and embracing personal growth, inviting the reader on a journey of self-leadership that goes way beyond being competent with bullies; it shows us how to build a foundation for peace and happiness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper attempts to identify Lebanon's greatest constraints to economic growth, following a growth diagnosis approach. It concludes that fiscal imbalances and barriers to entry are most binding on long-term growth. Macroeconomic imbalances and related perceived risks affect the nature of investment decisions in Lebanon, in favor of liquid instruments rather than longer-term productive investments. Further, many barriers to entry discourage agents from investing in a number of markets: legal impediments to competition, corruption, and a set of fiscal incentives favoring the allocation of resources to non-tradable sectors, where potential demand and investment opportunities are scarcer. In turn, using a steady-state computable general equilibrium model, the paper assesses the long-term growth impact of a selected set of policy reforms envisaged to lift such constraints. Results suggest that 1 to 2 percentage points of additional GDP growth per year could be gained through public expenditure reform, greater domestic competition, and tax harmonization.

Book excerpt: To be human is to be in relationships. We can’t survive without them but it’s in relationships that we can so easily get unravelled. Some relationships just seem to do us in. Either we feel like we lose ourselves or feel burnt out from futile efforts to make things right for another. In our relationships we can experience the very best of ourselves and the very worst. The message of Growing Yourself Up is that you can’t separate understanding the individual from understanding relationships. All of life’s relationships are integral to increasing self-awareness and maturity. And it’s not necessarily the comfortable relationships that promote personal growth. In this 2nd edition of the bestselling book, Jenny examines how to help others without fostering dependency, and how to determine what kind of help you or others want from therapists. This is in response to the many lay and professional people who have found this book valuable personally and want to know how to help others grow. Drawing from Bowen family systems theory, the book takes you on a journey through each stage of life to see predictable patterns of relationships and to show how to use this knowledge to make purposeful adjustments in yourself; as well as lending a mature helping hand to others. The result is a sturdier self, sturdier relationships and a refreshing new way to view life’s challenges and opportunities.
