Book excerpt: A massive urban renewal and public-health campaign in the first decades of the nineteenth century transformed Brazil's capital into a showcase of European architecture and public works. The renovation of Rio, or &"civilization&" campaign, as the government called it, widened streets, modernized the port, and improved sanitation, lighting, and public transportation. These changes made life worse, not better, for the majority of the city's residents, however; the laboring poor could no longer afford to live in the downtown, and the public-health plan did not extend to the peripheral areas where they were being forced to move. Their resistance is the focus of Teresa Meade's study. Meade details how Rio grew according to the requirements of international capital, which financed, planned, and oversaw the renewal&—and how local movements resisted these powerful, distant forces. She also traces the popular rebellion that continued for more than twenty years after the renovation ended in 1909, illustrating that community protests are the major characteristic of political life in the modern era.

Book excerpt: For several years the concept of "virtual client" or "virtual customer" has been part of the world of libraries and information services. This publication contains the proceedings of a satellite meeting on this topic, organized by the Management and Marketing Section of IFLA and held in Sao Paulo, Brazil in August 2004. It contains papers from more general points of views such as the democratization of access to digital information to more specific questions such as virtual libraries and new services, not forgetting user and librarian education, web site design, more specialized information, etc. The readers of these proceedings will find along these pages a very stimulating content which will guide them towards better services for virtual clients. Papers are presented in the original language of their presentation (Portuguese, French, Spanish and English) with summaries in these four languages.

He is one of the greatest statesman in world history, but he is unknown to the American public. He is the Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, James Madison and George Washington of Brazil embodied in one person. This book will cover some of the following subjects: Learn why the country itself was Jose Bonifacio's legacy to future Brazilian generations. The legacy that he left us is "Brazil" itself, because without Jose Bonifacio in Brazilian history, "Brazil" the country in its current form would not exist today. __ Learn how a document prepared by Jose Bonifacio de Andrada e Silva "Lembranas e Apontamentos do Governo Provisorio de Sao Paulo" dated October 9, 1821, is considered the most important document in the history of Brazil. This document laid the foundations for the new nation. Learn about the major impact that Jose Bonifacio had with his writings on the process of ending slavery in Brazil. His position paper on slavery (November 1823) had a major influence on all future legislation related to the slavery issue. Jose Bonifacio's grandson, Jose Bonifacio (The Younger), continued on his grandfather's fight to end slavery in Brazil. He did his fighting on the floor of the Senate until his death in October 1886. Slavery ended in Brazil on May 13, 1888. __ Learn about Jose Bonifacio's very important document regarding the Native Brazilian Indians; how his document served as the basis in 1845 (Imperial Brazil) and again in 1910 (now a republic), of information when they designed and organized the Service for the Protection of Native Indians. Learn how the Andrada brothers (Jose Bonifacio, Martim Francisco and Antonio Carlos), with their leadership, had a major impact on the Constituent Assembly. And how they guided the proceedings of the process of framing the first Brazilian Constitution . This Constitution was effective December 13, 1823, with the swearing-in ceremony on March 25, 1824. The book documents the reasons why Jose Bonifacio de Andrada e Silva's name will be immortalized by history. His name will be included on an exclusive list of immortal leaders. He will be recognized as one of the "Greatest Statesman" in world history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the middle of the nineteenth century until the 1888 abolition of slavery in Brazil, Rio de Janeiro was home to the largest urban population of enslaved workers anywhere in the Americas. It was also the site of an incipient working-class consciousness that expressed itself across seemingly distinct social categories. In this volume, Marcelo Badaró Mattos demonstrates that these two historical phenomena cannot be understood in isolation. Drawing on a wide range of historical sources, Badaró Mattos reveals the diverse labor arrangements and associative life of Rio’s working class, from which emerged the many strategies that workers both free and unfree pursued in their struggles against oppression.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the philanthropy of Brazilian elites during a key period in recent Brazilian history, from Workers Party president Lula’s last term in office through to the election of far-right president Jair Bolsonaro. Against this backdrop of political upheaval, the book asks what philanthropy can reveal about the role of corporate and wealth elites in upholding the structures of socioeconomic inequality that continue to define Brazilian society. The book argues that around the world the private sector’s growing engagement in international development has led to the emergence of a global philanthropic project centred on practices of "philanthrocapitalism" and "social finance," which ultimately seeks to legitimise global capitalism and the elite interests it serves. Drawing on an in-depth and wide-ranging ethnographic study among philanthropists and their advisors in over 30 Brazilian foundations and intermediary organisations, the book combines a structural critique of the capitalist ideologies underlying philanthropic practice with a robust exploration into the ways in which wealthy Brazilians appropriate philanthropy directly to legitimise elite reproduction and the accumulation of wealth. Researchers across Latin American studies, development studies and the anthropology of development will find this book a timely contribution to the under-researched areas of elite studies and the study of philanthropy.
