Merck's Annual Report of Recent Advances in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Therapeutics, 1912, Vol. 25 As far back as 1870 I undertook to furnish my friends and customers with short reports on recent therapeutic preparations, as at that time the professional journals did not contain as detailed and complete accounts of recent discoveries in the field of pharmacotherapy as is now the case. These communications, which appeared at irregular intervals, developed in the course of years into the regular Annual Report. Its aim from the first was to collect the most important items from the entire international literature, all the information that was likely to prove of interest to physicians and pharmacists, and to present it in a perfectly, impartial manner, leaving the reader to examine the information and to decide upon its actual value. I have therefore scrupulously avoided expressing my own views upon the results obtained by others, provided these communications did not conceal some actual danger, to which it was absolutely necessary to draw attention. On account of this impartiality, combined with as comprehensive a report as possible, the Annual Report has been so highly appreciated that the number of copies printed has had to be increased from year to year. At the present time it is published in four languages (German, English, French and Russian), the total annual edition amounting to 60,000 copies. This steady increase of the annual edition is evidence that the Annual Report supplies a real want. Further, it bears eloquent testimony that the Annual Report has succeeded in satisfying its readers. In accordance with the purely scientific object of the Annual Report, only those new preparations and drugs have been discussed which have been introduced into therapeutics as a result of scientific research, while secret remedies and scientifically questionable preparations have been excluded as far as possible. Thus doubtful preparations will not receive unmerited recognition, such as might result from their mention in the Annual Report, which is held in such high esteem. Merck's Annual Report, Vol. 24: Of Recent Advances in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Therapeutics The naturally occurring compounds of arsenium, particularly white arsenic, have always played a rather important role in the treatment of various skin diseases, and ascosmetics. It has remained for the investigators of thelast hundred years to throw more light on the physiological mode of action of arsenium and of its derivatives. With the gain in our knowledge of the therapeutic value of arsenium compounds, the ill effects of arsenic treatment were also brought to light, and it was shown that the successful treatment of obstinate skin diseases requires the use of such considerable doses of the inorganic arsenic preparations as to produce appreciable injury to the organism as a whole, or to special parts of it. Thus among the secondary effects following the use of arsenic many cases have been observed) of changes in the skin, such as dermatitis, erythema, pigmentation and shedding of hair, also affections of the internal organs, including the mucous membrane of the throat, nose and eyes, also frequent disturbances of the kidneys and of the central nervous system. An attempt was consequently made to use organic compounds of arsenium, and by their agency to administer large and effective doses of arsenium, practically freefrom any toxic action; this was achieved by the use of the salts of cacodylic acid. These salts quickly took a firm place in therapeutics, and they have held their ground in spite of the introduction of newer preparations of arsenium, for they rarely produce any harmful secondary effects, nor do they subject the patient to the risk of dangerous permanent injury, such as complete blindness, as has been observed to follow the use of other organic compounds of arsenium. The chemistry of the cacodylates and of cacodyle was fully studied by Bunsen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Bridging the fields of conservation, art history, and museum curating, this volume contains the principal papers from an international symposium titled "Historical Painting Techniques, Materials, and Studio Practice" at the University of Leiden in Amsterdam, Netherlands, from June 26 to 29, 1995. The symposium—designed for art historians, conservators, conservation scientists, and museum curators worldwide—was organized by the Department of Art History at the University of Leiden and the Art History Department of the Central Research Laboratory for Objects of Art and Science in Amsterdam. Twenty-five contributors representing museums and conservation institutions throughout the world provide recent research on historical painting techniques, including wall painting and polychrome sculpture. Topics cover the latest art historical research and scientific analyses of original techniques and materials, as well as historical sources, such as medieval treatises and descriptions of painting techniques in historical literature. Chapters include the painting methods of Rembrandt and Vermeer, Dutch 17th-century landscape painting, wall paintings in English churches, Chinese paintings on paper and canvas, and Tibetan thangkas. Color plates and black-and-white photographs illustrate works from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents a theoretical and experimental approach for the rapid fabrication, optimization and testing of holographic sensors for the quantification of pH, organic solvents, metal cations, and glucose in solutions. Developing non-invasive and reusable diagnostics sensors that can be easily manufactured will support the monitoring of high-risk individuals in any clinical or point-of-care setting. Sensor fabrication approaches outlined include silver-halide chemistry, laser ablation and photopolymerization. The sensors employ off-axis Bragg diffraction gratings of ordered silver nanoparticles and localized refractive index changes in poly (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) and polyacrylamide films. The sensors exhibited reversible Bragg peak shifts, and diffracted the spectrum of narrow-band light over the wavelength range λpeak ≈ 495-1100 nm. Clinical trials of glucose sensors in the urine samples of diabetic patients demonstrated that they offer superior performance compared to commercial high-throughput urinalysis devices. Lastly, a generic smartphone application to quantify colorimetric tests was developed and tested for both Android and iOS operating systems. The sensing platform and smartphone application may have implications for the development of low-cost, reusable and equipment-free point-of-care diagnostic devices.
