It is a rare significance of any language and literature that the speaker can express his/her views not only in one way but in more than one ways also. There is no exaggeration to say it is an art of such a language that enriches it. Download or read book Articles written by Durga Prasad and published by Durga Prasad. This book was released on 2018-03-01 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DESCRIPTION (Articles) Articles as we know are very important words that are used almost in all sentences or passages or statements before the countable nouns indicating a unit or many persons, places or things. An article is used normally before a countable noun indicates a person or a place or a thing. Such an article doesn’t denote a definite person or a definite place or a definite thing. What it indicates is a quite indefinite unit or number of a person or a place or a thing. Such articles are known is “Indefinite Articles.” There are two types of such indefinite articles: 1. A 2. An Another article is “The” which is known as definite article. It is an exception to the rule when no article is used before the countable nouns and it happens so as and when it is used as collective noun. For instance: Man is mortal. Here though man is a countable noun even then no article is used because man indicates its whole community. To know the rules where and how these articles are used correctly, one must read the whole chapter and for that one has to pay the price online as advised. Book Synopsis Linguistic Perspectives on English Grammar by : Martin J. Endley
Download or read book Linguistic Perspectives on English Grammar written by Martin J. Endley and published by IAP. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proposed book is best described as a linguistically oriented textbook taking the grammar of English as its subject matter. It is directed to professional teachers of English (ESL and EFL) and their students, as well as those currently training to become teachers of English. The book is also likely to be of interest to interpreters, translators and other English language professionals. It will explore selected aspects and problem areas of English from a broadly “functional” linguistic perspective. My experience as a teacher and teacher trainer has shown me that this perspective has the potential to inspire teachers and students with a genuine enthusiasm for the grammatical features of English and that it often enables them to “make sense” of the grammar in a way that all too often other approaches signally fail to do. An important focus of the book is on understanding grammar as a series of conventionalized patterns rather than a set of rules (which is how grammar has traditionally been presented). Moreover, unlike many other grammar books, this book emphasizes how the grammatical constructions under consideration are employed in various types of communicative situation, attention being given to the importance of discourse context in interpreting the target forms. In line with contemporary linguists generally, the approach adopted is descriptive rather than prescriptive. While the main focus is on English, I offer occasional comments on how the issue under discussion is expressed in languages other than English. Apart from the inherent interest which I hope such comparisons may have for the reader, I take the view that these can be helpful in casting further light on the grammar of English.

Book Synopsis Exploring Language Pedagogy through Second Language Acquisition Research by : Rod Ellis
Download or read book Exploring Language Pedagogy through Second Language Acquisition Research written by Rod Ellis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-31 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Routledge Introductions to Applied Linguistics is a series of introductory level textbooks covering the core topics in Applied Linguistics, primarily designed for those beginning postgraduate studies, or taking an introductory MA course as well as advanced undergraduates. Titles in the series are also ideal for language professionals returning to academic study. The books take an innovative 'practice to theory' approach, with a 'back-to-front' structure. This leads the reader from real-world problems and issues, through a discussion of intervention and how to engage with these concerns, before finally relating these practical issues to theoretical foundations. Additional features include a glossary of key terms, and discussion questions. Following the back-to-front approach of the series, the book takes problematic issues in language pedagogy as its starting points. These are then examined in terms of second language acquisition. Each chapter begins with a look at the pedagogical proposals found in teacher guides and then asks ‘Do these proposals accord with what we know about how languages are acquired?’ Pedagogical topics covered include teaching methods, syllabus design, explicit instruction, comprehension versus production-based instruction, task-based instruction, authentic materials, the role of the learners’ first language in the classroom, error correction and catering for individual differences. Including a glossary of key terms and questions for discussion at the end of each chapter, and assuming no prior knowledge of second language acquisition, this is the ideal text for all students studying language teaching methods, language teacher education, English teaching methodology and second language acquisition modules in advanced undergraduate and postgraduate/graduate TESOL and Applied Linguistics courses.
