Book Synopsis Physics and Contemporary Needs by : Asghar Qadir
Download or read book Physics and Contemporary Needs written by Asghar Qadir and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 629 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings cover the lectures delivered at the Fifth International Summer College on Physics and Contemporary Needs from June 16-July 4, 1980 at Nathiagali, one of the scenic hill resorts in the northern part of Pakistan. The college was organized by the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) and co-sponsored by the International Centre for Theroetical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy. It also received a financial grant from the University Grants Commission (UGC) for the participation of physicists from various universities in Pakistan. The college was attended by 22 lecturers and invited seminar speakers, 150 participants from 30 countries, and consisted of 15 concentrated days of lectures, seminars and informal discussions. These proceedings contain only some of the regular lectures delivered at Nathiagali, but the seminars heldthere are listed in the Appendix. This year the main emphasis of the college was on the fron tiers of physics, particularly on the recent exciting development in high-energy physics and astrophysics. However, the lectures delivered at the college also covered a large sample of other aspects of physics ranging from low"-temperature physics to plasma physics of of fusion. The series of colleges of which the present college is the fifth, an attempt to remove the barrier of isolation for the physicists working in developing countries, far removed from active centres of research. It is hoped that these colleges are helping to fill the gap in communication between the physicists of developing and advanced countries.

Book Synopsis Facts and Prospects of Gauge Theories by : Paul Urban
Download or read book Facts and Prospects of Gauge Theories written by Paul Urban and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 887 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These lectures concern the properties of topological charge in gauge theories and the physical effects which have been attributed to its existence. No introduction to this subject would be adequate without a discussion of the original work of Belavin, Polyakov, Schwarz, and Tyupkin [1], of the beautiful calculation by 't Hooft [2,3], and of the occurrence of 8-vacua [4-6]. Other important topics include recent progress on solutions of the Yang-Mills equation of motion [7,8], and the problem of parity and time-reversal invariance in strong interactions [9] (axions [10,11], etc.). In a few places, I have strayed from the conventional line and in one important case, disagreed with it. The im portant remark concerns the connection between chirality and topological charge first pointed out by 't Hooft [2]: in the literature, the rule is repeatedly quoted with the wrong sign! If QS is the generator for Abelian chiral transformations of massless quarks with N flavours, the correct form of the rule is ßQs = - 2N {topological charge} (1. 1) where ßQS means the out eigenvalue of QS minus the in eigenvalue. The sign can be checked by consulting the standard WKB calculation [2,3], rotating to Minkowski space, and observing that the sum of right-handed chiralities of operators in a Green's function equals -ßQS. The wrong sign is an automatie consequence of a standard but incorrect derivation in which the axial charge is misidentified.
Book Synopsis New Physics with Lorentz Violation by : Frank Sun
Download or read book New Physics with Lorentz Violation written by Frank Sun and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2005 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An explicit theory with Lorentz violation is deduced. Overwhelming experimental evidences are found and pointed out. Divergence and singularity problems and infrared (IR) catastrophe are solved and removed. Massless particles are disproved by DE fact and IR fact. Dark matter is explained by new field equations with energy-momentum tensor containing Lorentz factor and a new factor with very large values for high speed photons and neutrinos. Quark confinement, asymptotic freedom, empirical smooth running of the effective strong coupling constant without divergent pole, absence of radially excited states of composite hadrons, absence of gluon spectrum, and the small differences between baryon-octet and their spin 3/2 excited states are explained in a single renormalizable unified theory of massive vector fields with massive Lagrangian of Lee-Yang's type. The merit of the standard model is preserved except for the nonexistence of Higgs particles, gauge-self couplings, and gluon balls.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engages with the impact of modern technology on experimental physicists. This study reveals how the increasing scale and complexity of apparatus has distanced physicists from the very science which drew them into experimenting, and has fragmented microphysics into different technical traditions.

Book Synopsis The New Aspects of Subnuclear Physics by : Antonio Zichichi
Download or read book The New Aspects of Subnuclear Physics written by Antonio Zichichi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August 1978 a group of 80 physicists from 51 laboratories of 15 countries met in Erice to attend the 16th Course of the International School of Subnuclear Physics. The countries represented at the School were: Austria, Denmark, Federal Republic of Germany, Finland, France, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, The United States of America, and Yugoslavia. The School was sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Public Education (MPI) , the Italian Ministry of Scientific and Technological Research (MRSI) , the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the Sicilian Regional Government, and the Weizmann Institute of Science. As usual, the Course was devoted to a review of the most out standing problems and results in Subnuclear Physics, with particular emphasis on the new aspects; there were mainly two: supersymmetry and electroweak interactions. In his famous lecture at Erice in 1967, Sid Coleman reviewed "All possible symmetries of the S matrix. " All but one, namely that which tells you: if you have a fermion you must have a boson. This is super symmetry , and this produces the superspace, i. e. an entity which has not only the Einstein-"bosonic" coordinates, but also "fermionic" coordinates. From superspace we get supergravity; and this means that one day we should be able to detect not only the graviton (with spin 2) but also the gravitino (spin 3/2). If we add "flavour", "colour", and "family" as other intrinsic degrees of freedom, we get extended supergravity.

Book Synopsis The Theory of Quark and Gluon Interactions by : F.J. Yndurain
Download or read book The Theory of Quark and Gluon Interactions written by F.J. Yndurain and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book is not merely an elaboration of the 1982 text Quantum Chromodynamics: An Introduction to the Theory of Quarks and Gluons. In fact, a lot of material has been added: some of which is entirely new, and some of which is an extension of topics in the older text. Among the latter there are two sections dealing with the background field method, and the expansion of the section devoted to processes describable by perturbative QCD (other than deep inelastic scattering) into a whole chapter, containing a detailed description of Drell-Van scattering, jet physics, exclusive processes, QCD sum rules, etc. Besides this, we have added a completely new chapter on constituent models of hadrons, including a derivation of the quark quark potential, and, also entirely new, a half-chapter containing a detailed introduction to lattice QCD. An extra short chapter on the parameters of QCD and an appendix on group integration contribute to making the present book a really new text, sufficiently so to justify the change of title to The Theory of Quark and Gluon Interactions, a change that also emphasizes the consolidation of QCD as the theory of strong interactions. Of course even with the inclusion of the new material there are whole areas of quark and gluon physics not covered at all.
Book Synopsis The Origin of the Third Family by : Chien-shiung Wu
Download or read book The Origin of the Third Family written by Chien-shiung Wu and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1967 a group of physicists from the University of Bologna, led by A Zichichi, published a proposal to search for a heavy lepton using the Frascati (e(+)e(-)) collider. The proposal, whose key pages are reproduced in this book on the 30th anniversary of the publication, was the consequence of many years of work started at CERN, where, in addition to the original idea of searching for a heavy lepton carrying its own leptonic number, new technologies were invented to allow the detection of a signal whose identification against the high background of hadronic processes was extremely difficult. More than ten years of work by A Zichichi, together with his students and his collaborators, have paved the way for the discovery of the Third Family of fundamental particles. In this authoritative volume, a group of eminent physicists unequivocally establishes the origin of the Third Family of the basic constituents of matter.
