Book Synopsis Dynamiques des guerres civiles en Afrique by : Arsène Brice Bado
Download or read book Dynamiques des guerres civiles en Afrique written by Arsène Brice Bado and published by Editions L'Harmattan. This book was released on 2015-04-15 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis The Politics of Peacebuilding in Africa by : Thomas Kwasi Tieku
Download or read book The Politics of Peacebuilding in Africa written by Thomas Kwasi Tieku and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-29 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary book brings together innovative chapters that address the entire spectrum of the African peacebuilding landscape and showcases findings from original studies on peacebuilding. With a range of perspectives, the chapters cover the full gamut of peacebuilding (i.e. the continuum between conflict prevention and post-war reconstruction) and address both micro and macro peacebuilding issues in the five regions of Africa. Moving beyond the tendency to focus on a single case study or few case studies in peacebuilding scholarship, the chapters examine critical peacebuilding issues at the local, state, regional, extra-regional, and continental levels in Africa. This book will be of key interest to scholars and students of African politics, peace and security studies, regional organizations, development studies, state-building, and more broadly to international relations, public policy, diplomacy, international organizations, and the wider social sciences.
Book Synopsis The Dynamics of States by : Klaus Schlichte
Download or read book The Dynamics of States written by Klaus Schlichte and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: State domination in the non-Western world is hallmarked by its constantly shifting character. This stimulating book develops a new approach to the study of state formation and state erosion to explain dynamics that neither follow the pathways of development nor the rule of stagnation that dependency theory once suggested. Carefully edited by Klaus Schlichte, this book provides a fresh angle to the study of states with an attempt to 'overcome Weber with Weber'. The approach focuses on the historical authenticity of states and their institutional frameworks, describing the trajectories taken as they react to the effects of changes in their international and local social environments. The emphasis laid on the specific characteristics of individual states does not however lead to the theoretical difficulty of a new contextual relativism. The conceptual design employs sociological categories developed by Max Weber, Norbert Elias, Michel Foucault, Pierre Bourdieu and others.

Book Synopsis In the Shadow of Violence by : Klaus Schlichte
Download or read book In the Shadow of Violence written by Klaus Schlichte and published by Campus Verlag. This book was released on 2009-04-14 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Africa in the United Nations System, 1945-2005 by : Issaka K. Souare
Download or read book Africa in the United Nations System, 1945-2005 written by Issaka K. Souare and published by Adonis & Abbey Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though there have been numerous studies on the United Nations, only a few have dealt comprehensively with Africa's relations with the world body. This book attempts to fill this lacuna by providing a systematic assessment of Africa's relationship with the World body, from its foundation in 1945 to its sixtieth anniversary in 2005. The premise of the book's argument is that to properly understand Africa's current relationship with the UN, it is necessary to first understand the history and theoretical underpinnings behind the formation of the world body, including the expectations and motives of the different stakeholders. The book shows that there have been some real successes in Africa's relationship with the world body - such as the joint efforts against the Apartheid regime in South Africa - as well as real failures - such as in the genocide in Rwanda. Based on this, it concludes that Africa's relationship with the United Nations has worked for the most part, and will work even better, if Africa sees its partnership with the UN as complementary to it own efforts, projects and initiatives rather than something to depend on.
Download or read book Éducation, violences, conflits et perspectives de paix en Afrique subsaharienne written by and published by KARTHALA Editions. This book was released on 2009 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Managing the Undesirables by : Michel Agier
Download or read book Managing the Undesirables written by Michel Agier and published by Polity. This book was released on 2011-01-25 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Official figures classify some fifty million of the world’s people as 'victims of forced displacement'. Refugees, asylum seekers, disaster victims, the internally displaced and the temporarily tolerated - categories of the excluded proliferate, but many more are left out of count. In the face of this tragedy, humanitarian action increasingly seems the only possible response. On the ground, however, the 'facilities' put in place are more reminiscent of the logic of totalitarianism. In a situation of permanent catastrophe and endless emergency, 'undesirables' are kept apart and out of sight, while the care dispensed is designed to control, filter and confine. How should we interpret the disturbing symbiosis between the hand that cares and the hand that strikes? After seven years of study in the refugee camps, Michel Agier reveals their 'disquieting ambiguity' and stresses the imperative need to take into account forms of improvisation and challenge that are currently transforming the camps, sometimes making them into towns and heralding the emergence of political subjects. A radical critique of the foundations, contexts, and political effects of humanitarian action.
