Book excerpt: I explored the vortex dynamics in homonuclear species two-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) based on the knowledge of vortex dynamics in one-component BECs. The vortex dynamics in BECs depends on the background elds induced by di erent external potentials and other vortices. The motion of vortices is numerically computed and the numerical results are compared to the theoretical formulas where possible. In the study of the vortex-vortex interaction dynamics in one-component BECs, a power law relationship between the motion of the vortices and their separation distance is depicted. In addition to that, the relationship between the linear and the angular velocities of the vortices is found to be similar to the relationship between the tangential and the angular velocities of classical uid vortices. In the case of two-component BEC dynamics, two di erent cases are studied: one without atomic inter-conversion between the two components and the other with atomic inter-conversion. The stability analysis of the two-component BECs is conducted to identify the stable regions as well as the regions of mixed and separated states. When a vortex is seeded in one component, this vortex induces a hump in the other component at the same location as the vortex, which leads to the vortexhump dynamics. The vortex-hump-vortex-hump interaction dynamics without atomic inter-conversion depicts a power law relation between the motion of vortex-humps and the separation distance; whereas, the vortex-hump-vortex-hump interaction dynamics with atomic inter-conversion reveals a more complex relation between the motion of vortex-humps and the separation distance.

Book excerpt: Advancing the experimental study of superfluids relies on increasingly sophisticated techniques. We develop and demonstrate the loading of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) into nearly arbitrary trapping potentials, with a resolution improved by a factor of seven when compared to reported systems. These advanced control techniques have since been adopted by several cold atoms labs around the world. How this BEC system was used to study 2D superfluid dynamics is described. In particular, negative temperature vortex states in a two-dimensional quantum fluid were observed. These states were first predicted by Lars Onsager 70 years ago and have significance to 2D turbulence in quantum and classical fluids, long-range interacting systems, and defect dynamics in high-energy physics. These experiments have established dilute-gas BECs as the prototypical system for the experimental study of point vortices and their nonequilibrium dynamics. We also developed a new approach to superfluid circuitry based on classical acoustic circuits, demonstrating its conceptual and quantitative superiority over previous lumped-element models. This has established foundational principles of superfluid circuitry that will impact the design of future transport experiments and new generation quantum devices, such as atomtronics circuits and superfluid sensors.

First, the two dynamical regimes of the Josephson junction, that is, Josephson oscillations and self-trapping, are investigated under the application of a large sudden perturbation. It is found that the Josephson dynamics have a strong dependence on the strength of the interatomic interaction, and we observe the breakdown of the two-mode approximation. Second, we study the control of the dynamics through the use of a time-dependent, tilted double well potential. In the context of complete population transfer, the effect of the interactions on the adiabaticity and self-trapping is discussed in terms of a Landau-Zener-like model. We then explore the splitting of the condensate and the resulting dynamical behaviour by keeping the interaction strength constant, but changing the rate of the tilt sweep. Lastly, we examine the effect of the tilt sweep rate on the dynamics of population transfer. We observe a dependence of the self-trapping on the adiabaticity.

Book excerpt: This thesis reports the experimental study of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with tunable interactions, which are exploited as a platform to perform quantum simulation of many-body quantum systems. To perform this experiments, we have implemented an atomic source consisting on a glass cell 2D MOT vacuum chamber and a high resolution optical system to image and manipulate the atoms. Furthermore, we develop and characterize a polarization phase contrast technique which is able to probe optically dense atomic mixtures at intermediate and high magnetic fields in open transitions. This technique has been used to either probe the total column density of a two-component atomic cloud or the difference in column density between both components. We report on the first observation of composite quantum liquid droplets in an incoherent mixture with residual mean field attraction. Strikingly, this novel phase is stabilized due to the repulsive beyond mean field corrections in a weakly interacting system. Moreover, we have characterized the liquid to gas phase transition which occurs for small atom numbers. Additionally, we have compared two different self-bound states in a quasi-1D geometry with incoherent mixtures: quantum droplets and bright solitons. Depending on the atom number and interaction strengths both states can be smoothly connected through a crossover or be distinct entities separated by a transition. We have measured its composition, its phase diagram and mapped out the soliton to droplet transition. Finally, we report on a technique to modify the elastic and inelastic interactions in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate with very unequal and competing interactions under the presence of strong coherent coupling. This technique provides a wide flexibility and has allowed us to observe bright solitons in quasi-1D in a coherently coupled dressed state. We exploit the fast temporal control of the effective interactions to quench them into the attractive regime and study the resulting modulational instability which develops into a bright soliton train.

Of these structures, vortices and two-component BECs are at the forefront in understanding fundamental properties of BECs and have been under intense scrutiny in both experiments and theoretical studies. The behavior of these structures elucidates the mechanics of nonlinear processes that give rise to patterns in vortex lattices and patterns in binary BECs. This has lead to the integration of BECs into the new field of emergent phenomena that has unified many seemingly unrelated disciplines because at a fundamental level, the nonlinear processes provide a blueprint to give rise to coherence out of randomness. First, we study the interactions between two atomic species in a binary BEC to determine conditions for miscibility, oscillations between species, steady state solutions and their stability. Second, the two component system is extended to a quasi-2D systems for a pancake-shaped condensate. Third, the shape of the background atomic density as well as the background with a vortex is studied to determine the role of the phase and background on the precession of a vortex. Lastly, the dynamics of small clusters of same charge vortices in a trapped BEC is studied giving fixed point configurations that rotate at a constant speed.
