Book excerpt: A classical problem in fluid mechanics, laminar to turbulent transition in pipe flow, was investigated. Transition in pipe flow was first studied in detail by Reynolds (1883) and continued subsequently by numerous researchers. Nevertheless, there are still number of unknown issues that need clarification. As is well known, two distinct types of flow structure exist during a laminar to turbulent transition in pipes, namely puffs and slugs, termed by Wygnanski (1973). Investigations described in this dissertation were concentrated in the development of puffs and slugs in a pipe at different Reynolds numbers, following some preliminary research works. Also considered is a transformation from puffs to slugs through puff splittings, occurring while they propagate in a pipe or by an increase in Reynolds number. In low Reynolds number pipe flows, a dissipation of puffs was observed and then investigated. The time between when puffs were created and dissipated was termed `full- lifetime' and measured directly by a pressure transient. According to the investigations, possible evolutions of puffs were found and discussed.

Book excerpt: Transition to turbulence in pipe flow has puzzled scientists since the studies of Hagen, Poiseuille and, most prominently, Osborne Reynolds in the nineteenth century. Much of the difficulty in understanding the transition is connected with the linear stability of the laminar flow, which implies that a fully nonlinear analysis is required. In this work we apply methods from dynamical systems theory and nonlinear dynamics to explore the system's state space close to the transition. We analyze lifetime distributions of turbulent signals in domains of different lengths and study their variation with Reynolds number Re. Lifetimes are found to follow the exponential distribution typical of a chaotic saddle, with a characteristic time that increases rapidly with Re. The absence of a divergence in the lifetimes suggests that turbulence remains transient even at high flow velocities. The coherent states which appear transiently during the turbulent evolution are characterized. Correlation functions for their detection are introduced and their statistical properties extracted. They can be detected during more than 20% of the time. Finally, the stability border between laminar and turbulent dynamics is studied. Using a specially tailored tracking algorithm the dynamics between laminar and turbulent motion can be followed and an invariant dynamical object whose stable manifold separates the laminar from turbulent dynamics is identified. This object should provide useful for further studies on triggering turbulence or relaminarization.

Book excerpt: When fluid flows through a channel, pipe or duct, there are two basic forms of motion: smooth laminar flow and disordered turbulent motion. The transition between these two states is a fundamental and open problem which has been studied for over 125 years. What has received far less attention are the intermittent dynamics which possess qualities of both turbulent and laminar regimes. The purpose of this thesis is therefore to investigate large-scale intermittent states through extensive numerical simulations in the hopes of further understanding the transition to turbulence in pipe flow. We begin by reviewing the spectral-element code Semtex which is used to perform the simulations. We discuss modifications to this code to impose a constant flowrate to the flow through a pipe and to improve the computational efficiency on certain multicore architectures. We then move on to examine the reverse transition from turbulence to laminar flow in a long, 125 diameter periodic pipe, which unlike the forward transition does not depend on finiteamplitude perturbations to the flow and thus captures the natural dynamics contained within the transition. The Reynolds number Re is reduced from Re = 2,800 to Re = 2,250 over a long timescale, and by investigating the resultant spatio-temporal dynamics we discover that the transition can be characterised by three fundamentally different states separated by two Reynolds numbers. The turbulence - as intensity divided by shear velocity and macroscale in ratio to pipe radius - in rough pipe flow appears the same in rough as in smooth pipe flow.
