Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demography is destiny for most populations. At this juncture of its demographic transition, it is, however, migration that is destiny for the Kerala population According to the first Kerala Migration Study (1999), migration had provided the single most dynamic factor in the otherwise dismal economic scenario of Kerala in the last quarter of the twentieth century. This Book documents Kerala's deepening socio-economic nexus with the Gulf countries through emigration based on the second Kerala Migration Survey conducted in 2004, funded the South Asian Network of Economic Institutes (SANE) and the special grant from the Centre for Development Studies, Kerala. It provides information on the size, trend, geographical distribution, socio-economic composition of migrants, and remittances sent home by migrants.// Analysis based on this new study indicates that migration is continuing to provide the most dynamic factor in the economic growth of Kerala State in the new century. The new century is likely to see migration encompassing a wider section of the Kerala population and the migration-impact spreading to newer sectors of the Kerala economy. Migrants of the 21st century would be structurally different from those of the 20th century. They would be better qualified and would be occupying higher positions in the job market abroad. The economic and political climate in the State seems to be becoming more receptive to profitable investments in developmental projects on a much larger scale in the coming decades. Emigration is likely to bring in, besides the much-needed capital, entrepreneurship and business leadership for Kerala's development. Migration is poised to determine more closely Kerala's destiny in the socio-economic development in the coming decades.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines international out-migration from North India, focusing on the state of Punjab. It is the first-ever empirical exploration of the causes, processes, patterns and consequences of international out-migration based on a robust sample of 10,000 households drawn from both rural and urban areas. The volume explores a range of issues such as current migration, return migration, remittances, reverse remittances, diaspora philanthropy, migration consultancy services, international marriages, campaigns for safe migration abroad and plans for emigration in future. It also addresses questions surrounding the use of paid labour by households to replace the work done by the emigrants and studies villages as the migration setting. Additionally, the book organically links to a well-spread-out and vibrant Punjabi diaspora, as well as providing viable baseline data on a range of indicators. A key text on migration studies, this volume will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of development studies, economics, demography, sociology, social anthropology and diaspora studies.

Book excerpt: International migration and workers’ remittances have, of late, become a significant economic and social phenomena affecting the fortunes of millions of families in the developing countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America. Yet, the measurements and methods of analysis of their impact on the individuals, families, economy, and society have not received the attention they deserve. A first-of-its-kind study of international migration, based on large-scale surveys across a span of 15 years of fieldwork, this book: includes methods of conducting field surveys, estimating migration, and analysing migration trends, remittances, selectivity, and differentials; assesses other demographic, socio-economic phenomenon, such as education, employment and women’s status; provides a methodology to evaluate remittances and their influence on the economy; and examines social costs of migration on those left behind — parents, wives and children — a neglected area in the field of migration. This handbook will be invaluable to scholars and students of migration studies, demography, development studies and sociology as well as policy-makers, administrators, academics, and non-governmental organisations in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handbook of Internal Migration in India is an inter-disciplinary, multi-faceted and thought-provoking book on internal migrants and their dynamics among the states in India. The first of its kind, this handbook provides novel information on processes, trends, determinants, differentials and dynamics of internal migration and its inter-linkages with individuals, families, economy and society. Most of the chapters have been written by scholars of repute who have spent their lifetime working on migration and the factors associated with it. This handbook is an attempt to address the lacunae in internal migration studies using both big data, such as Indian censuses, National Sample Surveys, India Human Development Surveys and Kerala Migration Surveys, and micro-level data collected by enthusiastic researchers in most parts of India to explore the unknown facets of internal migration. This book employs interdisciplinary and mixed methods to examine issues such as climate change, gender, urbanization, caste/tribe, religion, politics and emergence of migration policies. It addresses the crucial question as to why temporary and short-term migration continues to be an important livelihood strategy for millions of migrants thereby having an everlasting impact on the sociopolitical and economic structure of the country.
