Book excerpt: This monograph is intended to provide a snapshot of the status and opportunities for advan cement in the technologies of dynamics and control oflarge flexible spacecraft structures. It is a reflection ofthe serious dialog and assessments going on all over the world, across a wide variety of scientific and technical disciplines, as we contemplate the next major milestone in mankind's romance with space: the transition from exploration and experimentation to commercial and defense exploitation. This exploitation is already in full swing in the space communications area. Both military and civilian objectives are being pursued with increasingly more sophisticated systems such as large antenna reflectors with active shape control. Both the NATO and Warsaw pact alliances are pursuing permanent space stations in orbit: large structural systems whose development calls for in-situ fabrication and/or assembly and whose operation will demand innovations in controls technology. The last ten years have witnessed a fairly brisk research activity in the dynamics and control oflarge space structures in orderto establish a technology base forthe development of advanced spacecraft systems envisioned for the future. They have spanned a wide spectrum of activity from fundamental methods development to systems concept studies and laboratory experimentation and demonstrations. Some flight experiments have also been conducted for various purposes such as the characterization of the space enviroment, durability of materials and devices in that environment, assembly and repair operations, and the dynamic behavior of flexible structures. It is this last area that has prompted this monogram.

Book Synopsis Dynamics Characterization of Highly Flexible Beams Using a 3D Motion Analysis System by : Suresh Ramanathan
Download or read book Dynamics Characterization of Highly Flexible Beams Using a 3D Motion Analysis System written by Suresh Ramanathan and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent developments in aerospace exploration have stimulated extensive research into the mechanics of large flexible space structures, such as dish antennas, space telescopes and solar collectors. Highly flexible structures are designed to undergo large displacements and rotations without plastic deformation. But when a structure undergoes large displacements, various secondary effects (e.g., rotary inertias, cross section warping) may become significant, and its statics and dynamics may involve several nonlinear effects, such as shortening effect, nonlinear curvatures, mid-plane stretching and modal couplings among vibration modes. Hence, nonlinear structural theories that can model large displacements and rotations are needed. Moreover, it is important to understand the nonlinear static and dynamic behaviors of highly flexible structures in order to design such structures. In this thesis we derive and use a geometrically exact beam theory to analyze large static deformations of beams, and perform numerical and experimental studies on the nonlinear dynamics of highly flexible beams. The multiple shooting method and the method of multiple scales were used to solve the nonlinear governing equations of a highly flexible cantilevered beam. A 3D motion analysis system is used to perform dynamic testing and to verify numerical results. Comparison of numerical and experimental results shows that the derived nonlinear beam theory can model very large displacements and rotations of beams.

Book Synopsis Nonlinear Dynamics and Control of Flexible Structures by :
Download or read book Nonlinear Dynamics and Control of Flexible Structures written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goals of these research projects were to examine the nonlinear dynamics and control of flexible structures, some of which might be used for space applications. This project was a collaborative one involving structural, electrical and mechanical engineers. A major part of the research was on trusses/frames structures. Five different truss structures from three to ten meters in size were constructed, two with active controls. However, nonlinear dynamics of continuous beam type structures were also investigated. One of the principal themes was to explore what types of nonlinearities would result in chaotic and unpredictable vibrations. Loose joints in truss structures, friction, buckling and geometric nonlinearities were all found to lead to chaotic motions under certain periodic forcing conditions. Actuators and sensors for space truss active vibration suppression was investigated. New methods were developed for structural control using techniques for simulated annealing for actuator placement, nonlinear random vibrations of pin-jointed trusses, vibration analysis and new models to analyze chaotic dynamics in nonlinear structures with large deformations and friction forces. Finally, a major numerical effort resulted in new codes to predict large motions of structures under active control using parallel processing algorithms.
Book Synopsis Flexible Multibody Dynamics by : Michel Géradin
Download or read book Flexible Multibody Dynamics written by Michel Géradin and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2001-03-05 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flexible Multibody Dynamics comprehensively describes the numerical modelling of flexible multibody dynamics systems in space and aircraft structures, vehicles, and mechanical systems. A rigorous approach is followed to handle finite rotations in 3D, with a thorough discussion of the different alternatives for parametrization. Modelling of flexible bodies is treated following the Finite Element technique, a novel aspect in multibody systems simulation. Moreover, this book provides extensive coverage of the formulation of a general purpose software for flexible multibody dynamics analysis, based on an exhaustive treatment of large rotations and finite element modelling, and incorporating useful reference material. Features include different solution techniques such as: * time integration of differential-algebraic equations * non-linear substructuring * continuation methods * nonlinear bifurcation analysis. In essence, this is an ideal text for senior undergraduates, postgraduates and professionals in mechanical and aeronautical engineering, as well as mechanical design engineers and researchers, and engineers working in areas such as kinematics and dynamics of deployable structures, vehicle dynamics and mechanical design.

Download or read book Flexible Spacecraft Dynamics, Control and Guidance written by Leonardo Mazzini and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-27 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an up-to-date compendium on spacecraft attitude and orbit control (AOC) that offers a systematic and complete treatment of the subject with the aim of imparting the theoretical and practical knowledge that is required by designers, engineers, and researchers. After an introduction on the kinematics of the flexible and agile space vehicles, the modern architecture and functions of an AOC system are described and the main AOC modes reviewed with possible design solutions and examples. The dynamics of the flexible body in space are then considered using an original Lagrangian approach suitable for the control applications of large space flexible structures. Subsequent chapters address optimal control theory, attitude control methods, and orbit control applications, including the optimal orbital transfer with finite and infinite thrust. The theory is integrated with a description of current propulsion systems, with the focus especially on the new electric propulsion systems and state of the art sensors and actuators.
