Book excerpt: The sixth symposium on "Dynamics in Small Confining Systems", held November 27-30 at the 2000 MRS Fall Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts, celebrated a decade of this series. The program of the symposium covered a broad range of topics related to static and dynamic properties of confining systems: probing of confined systems, structure and dynamics of liquids at interfaces, nanorheology and tribology, adsorption, diffusion in pores, polymers and membranes, dielectric relaxation and biological aspects. Participants from various disciplines shared different points of view on the questions of how ultra small geometries can force a system to behave in ways significantly different from its behavior in the bulk, how this difference affects molecular properties, and how it is probed. There appears to be a continuing interest in the dynamics and thermodynamics of confined molecular systems. This symposium was an effective way to bring together different disciplines interested in common problems.

Book excerpt: Interfacial science has rapidly expanded beyond the original realm of chemistry to include specialized subfields. This book covers an exapnding body of work dealing with the dynamics and thermodynamics of molecular systems in spatial confinement. Participants from various disciplines share their views on how ultrasmall geometries can force a system to behave in ways significantly different than its behavior in bulk, how this difference affects molecular properties, and how it is probed. Investigators are studying phenomena in a broad range of materials, and confinement of liquids is also an important issue. Advances in experiment, theory, and computation have greatly increased our understanding of dynamics in confined systems, but this book proves that there is still much to be learned. Topics include: confined and anomalous dynamics in porous, supramolecular and biological systems; methods to probe dynamics in confinement; microfluidics and hydrodynamics near solid surfaces; friction and structural properties of fluids under shear; dynamic force spectroscopy; and numerical modeling and computational techniques of confined systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interfacial science has rapidly expanded beyond the original realm of chemistry to include physics, mechanical and chemical engineering, biology, materials science, and other specialized subfields. This book in a series from MRS emphasizes the effects of confinement on the physical and chemical properties of equilibrium and nonequilibrium systems. Of particular interest is the question of how nearby surfaces or ultra-small geometries can force a system to behave in ways significantly different than it behaves in bulk. Theoretical, experimental and computational evidence of the effects of confinement on gaseous, liquid and solid systems is presented. Topics include: probing confined systems; structure and dynamics of liquids at interfaces; nanorheology and tribology; adsorption; diffusion in porous systems and reaction dynamics.

Book excerpt: The fourth symposium on 'Dynamics in Small Confining Systems, ' held as part of the 1996 MRS Fall Meeting, covered a broad range of topics related to static and dynamic properties of confining systems: probing of confined systems, structure and dynamics of liquids at interfaces, nanorheology and tribology, adsorption, diffusion in pores, and reactions. Participants from various disciplines shared different points of view on the questions of how ultrasmall geometries can force a system to behave in ways significantly different from its behavior in the bulk, how this difference affects molecular properties, and how it is probed. There appears to be a continuing interest in the dynamics and thermodynamics of confined molecular systems. The symposium was an effective way to bring together different disciplines interested in. The contributions in the book reflect the broad range of topics discussed at the meeting, all related to dynamics in small confining systems. The papers appear in the book in the order of their presentation during the symposium.

Book excerpt: This book, the fourth in a series from the Materials Research Society, follows the tradition of earlier volumes in the series and covers a broad range of topics relating to structure and dynamics under geometric restrictions. Emphasis is on methods of probing confined systems, diffusion in porous media, polymers and membranes, dielectric and mechanical relaxation in nanopores, rheology and friction studies of embedded liquids, and properties of dendrimer supermolecules. Participants from many varied disciplines share their points of view on the fundamental questions of how spatial restrictions modify a system to behave significantly different than in bulk, how this difference relates to the molecular properties, and how it can be probed.

Special emphasis is given to polymer aspects of this interdisciplinary problem. Taken together, the contributions offer ample evidence of how the field of polymer science continues to evolve with the passage of time. The topics revolve around the tendency of surfaces to impede chain relaxation and to stimulate new sorts of chain organization. These have been implicated in a variety of spectacular phenomena. Book excerpt: Polymers are essential to biology because they can have enough stable degrees of freedom to store the molecular code of heredity and to express the sequences needed to manufacture new molecules. Through these they perform or control virtually every function in life. Although some biopolymers are created and spend their entire career in the relatively large free space inside cells or organelles, many biopolymers must migrate through a narrow passageway to get to their targeted destination. This suggests the questions: How does confining a polymer affect its behavior and function? What does that tell us about the interactions between the monomers that comprise the polymer and the molecules that confine it? Can we design and build devices that mimic the functions of these nanoscale systems? The NATO Advanced Research Workshop brought together for four days in Bikal, Hungary over forty experts in experimental and theoretical biophysics, molecular biology, biophysical chemistry, and biochemistry interested in these questions. Their papers collected in this book provide insight on biological processes involving confinement and form a basis for new biotechnological applications using polymers. In his paper Edmund DiMarzio asks: What is so special about polymers? Why are polymers so prevalent in living things? The chemist says the reason is that a protein made of N amino acids can have any of 20 different kinds at each position along the chain, resulting in 20 N different polymers, and that the complexity of life lies in this variety.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides working tools for the study and design of nonlinear dynamical systems applicable in physics and engineering. It offers a broad-based introduction to this challenging area of study, taking an applications-oriented approach that emphasizes qualitative analysis and approximations rather than formal mathematics or simulation. The author, an internationally recognized authority in the field, makes extensive use of examples and includes executable Mathematica notebooks that may be used to generate new examples as hands-on exercises. The coverage includes discussion of mechanical models, chemical and ecological interactions, nonlinear oscillations and chaos, forcing and synchronization, spatial patterns and waves. Key Features: Written for a broad audience, avoiding dependence on mathematical formulations in favor of qualitative, constructive treatment Extensive use of physical and engineering applications Incorporates Mathematica notebooks for simulations and hands-on self-study Provides a gentle but rigorous introduction to real-world nonlinear problems Features a final chapter dedicated to applications of dynamical systems to spatial patterns The book is aimed at student and researchers in applied mathematics and mathematical modelling of physical and engineering problems. It teaches to see common features in systems of different origins, and to apply common methods of study without losing sight of complications and uncertainties related to their physical origin.
