Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Terrorist bomb attacks and threats are on the rise all over the world. High explosive detonations cause extensive damage to both the target structure and nearby buildings. It is estimated that the majority of nonfatal injuries from bomb blasts result from flying fragments from architectural glazing. Use of laminated glass, two soda lime glass plies are adhered to a polyvinyl butyral (PVB) interlayer, has the potential for limiting such hazards. Most of the work on laminated glazing subjected to blast loading has been experimental and primarily geared towards product evaluation and certification rather than to understand the failure modes and post-failure response of panels. The stress characteristics and the failure modes of such laminates need to be analyzed and understood. A three-dimensional nonlinear dynamic finite element model is used to study the dynamic response of a glazing subjected a bomb explosion on ground. For computational efficiency, a closed-form formulation is presented for the blast loading parameters. The glass and PVB are treated as elastic and viscoelastic, respectively. The dynamic response of the glazing is studied using closed-form solutions based on the classical small deflection and the von Karman's thin plate theory. Two-parameter Weibull distribution is adopted to describe the cumulative probability of failure. Effect of various parameters on the damage probability is studied. The size of glass shard (fragment) is determined using the Griffith's energy balance approach"--Abstract, leaf iv.

Book excerpt: "Laminated glazing has been a popular form of window glazing in recent years and is found to be effective during extreme weather conditions like hurricane. Laminated glass is composed of two glass layers with a polymer as an interlayer. The main objective of this work involves studying the stress response, failure and damage analysis of rectangular laminated architectural glazing against combined wind and windborne debris impact. Here both small-hard (like roof gravel) and large-soft (like timber) windborne debris are considered. The stress response of the rectangular laminated architectural glazing was modeled using the finite element code ABAQUS. The effect of geometric and material properties of glass and PVB on the stress response is studied to find an optimum configuration with impact resistance as criteria. Also, the stress distribution through the thickness of glazing is studied. The cumulative probability of failure of the inner ply of the laminated glazing is studied by using a mechanics based analytical model. Based on cumulative damage theory, a two-parameter Weibull distribution is used to predict the existence of flaws capable of causing failure in the inner glass ply. The stresses in the laminate are determined from finite element analysis. Effects of combined wind and debris impact and geometry of glazing on failure probability is studied. The fracture of the laminated glazing has been studied in an average sense using Continuum Damage Mechanics (CDM). An anisotropic elastic damage tensor with a linear damage evolution has been chosen to model the damage through the glass. This model is implemented in finite element code to study the damage. A parametric study involving the geometry of glazing is used to study the damage. The damage patterns and zone sizes are predicted with this model"--Abstract, leaf iv.

Book excerpt: The present doctoral dissertation contributes to the analysis of glass panels subjected to blast load, concentrating on monolithic and laminated glass prior to glass fracture. A straightforward graphical solution for monolithic glass is presented to identify maximum deformation and maximum principal stress for small and large deformations for static and idealized blast load without software. On the basis of experimental tests, load duration factors kmod for impact and blast load design for annealed glass, heat strengthened glass and fully tempered glass are proposed. In addition, design strength values for impact and blast design based on the European and German standards are suggested. As a result, blast pressure capacity charts for monolithic fully tempered glass plates subjected to idealized blast load are presented. Moreover, design temperatures of interlayer in blast design situation based on empirical data in accordance with Eurocode are determined for vertical double glazed and triple glazed units for Germany, showing that laminated glass should not be regarded with monolithic glass approach in general.

Book excerpt: Dynamic Failure of Materials and Structures discusses the topic of dynamic loadings and their effect on material and structural failure. Since dynamic loading problems are very difficult as compared to their static counterpart, very little information is currently available about dynamic behavior of materials and structures. Topics covered include the response of both metallic as well as polymeric composite materials to blast loading and shock loadings, impact loadings and failure of novel materials under more controlled dynamic loads. These include response of soft materials that are important in practical use but have very limited information available on their dynamic response. Dynamic fragmentation, which has re-emerged in recent years has also been included. Both experimental as well as numerical aspects of material and structural response to dynamic loads are discussed. Written by several key experts in the field, Dynamic Failure of Materials and Structures will appeal to graduate students and researchers studying dynamic loadings within mechanical and civil engineering, as well as in physics and materials science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SUSI XIII contains the proceedings of the 13th International Conference in the successful series of Structures Under Shock and Impact. Since the first meeting in Cambridge, Massachusetts (1989) the conference has brought together the research works of scientists and engineers from a wide range of academic disciplines and industrial backgrounds that have an interest in the structural impact response of structures and materials. The shock and impact behaviour of structures is a challenging area, not only because of the obvious time-dependent aspects, but also due to the difficulties in specifying the external dynamic loadings, boundary conditions and connection characteristics for structural design and hazard assessment, and in obtaining the dynamic properties of materials. Thus, it is important to recognise and utilise fully the contributions and understand the emerging theoretical, numerical and experimental studies on structures, as well as investigations into the material properties under dynamic loading conditions. Any increased knowledge will enhance our understanding of these problems and thorough forensic studies on the structural damage after accidents will lead to improved design requirements. The range of topics in this very active field is ever expanding. The following list of topics gives an idea of the wide number of applications covered: Impact and blast loading; Energy absorbing issues; Interaction between computational; and experimental results; Aeronautical and aerospace applications; Response of reinforce concrete under impact; Response of building facades to blast; Seismic behaviour; Structural crashworthiness; Industrial accidents and explosions; Hazard mitigation and assessment; Active protection and security; Tunnel and underground; structures protection; Dynamic analysis of composite structures; Design against failure; Damage limitation.

Book excerpt: "The glass structures of exterior window panels may become a debris hazard to building occupants when high explosives, for example, a terrorist vehicle bomb or body bomb, are detonated outside of a building. It is much more hazardous in body bomb case than in other types of terrorist attacks because the attack could happen in close proximity of the buildings. The dynamic response of glass structures subjected to small blast load at a short distance, however, has not fully understood. To address this issue, a 3-D, nonlinear, dynamic finite element model has been developed in this work to analyze the stress in a monolithic glass panel subjected to small blast load at a short distance. In this study, the small blast load at a short distance is modeled as a spherical blast wave"--Abstract, leaf iii.

Book excerpt: It is well-known that the topic of composite mate- rials affects many engineering fields, such as civil, mechanical, aerospace, automotive and chemical. In the last decades, in fact, a huge number of scientific papers concerning these peculiar constituents has been published. Analogously, the industrial progress has been extremely noticeable. The study of composite materials, in general, is a challenging activity since the advancements both in the academia and in the industry provide continually new sparks to develop innovative ideas and applications. The communication, the sharing and the exchange of views can surely help the works of many researchers. This aspect represents the main purpose of this Conference, which aims to collect high-level contributions on the development and the application of composite materials. The establishment of this 21st edition of International Conference on Composite Structures has appeared appropriate to continue what has been begun during the previous editions. ICCS wants to be an occasion for many researchers from each part of the globe to meet and discuss about the recent advancements regarding the use of composite structures, sandwich panels, nanotechnology, bio-composites, delamination and fracture, experimental methods, manufacturing and other countless topics that have filled many sessions during this conference. As a proof of this event, which has taken place in Bologna (Italy), selected plenary and key-note lectures have been collected in the present book.

Book excerpt: This book presents a broad view of the current state of the art regarding the dynamic response of composite and sandwich structures subjected to impacts and explosions. Each chapter combines a thorough assessment of the literature with original contributions made by the authors. The first section deals with fluid-structure interactions in marine structures. The first chapter focuses on hull slamming and particularly cases in which the deformation of the structure affects the motion of the fluid during the water entry of flexible hulls. Chapter 2 presents an extensive series of tests underwater and in the air to determine the effects of explosions on composite and sandwich structures. Full-scale structures were subjected to significant explosive charges, and such results are extremely rare in the open literature. Chapter 3 describes a simple geometrical theory of diffraction for describing the interaction of an underwater blast wave with submerged structures. The second section addresses the problem of impact on laminated composite structures with chapters devoted to ballistic impacts on pre-stressed composite structures, tests developed to simulate dynamic failure in marine structures, damage mechanisms and energy absorption in low velocity impacts, perforation, the numerical simulation of intra and inter-ply damage during impact, and hail impact on laminated composites. Sandwich structures with laminated facings are considered in Section 3 with chapters dealing with the discrete modeling of honeycomb core during the indentation of sandwich structures, the behavior of fold core sandwich structures during impact, and impact on helicopter blades. The fourth section consists of two chapters presenting experimental results and numerical simulation of composite structures subjected to crash. This volume is intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and engineers interested and involved in analysis and design of composite structures.
