Mach 10 wind tunnel of the von Karman Gas Dynamics Facility to determine the dynamic stability characteristics of a 10-deg half-angle cone at large amplitudes of oscillation. Support interference effects were also investigated. A free oscillation, high-amplitude (+ or - 35 deg) gas bearing balance supported by a transverse rod and yoke system was used. Data were obtained at a nominal Mach number of 10 at Reynolds numbers, based on the model base diameter, ranging from 0.46 to 1.84 x 10 to the 6th power. The dynamic and static stability data are compared with data obtained with a sting-supported model, range data, flow field theory, and conical flow theory. Selected test results are presented. Book excerpt: Tests were conducted in the 30-Inch Hypersonic Tunnel on the Aerospace Research Laboratories, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio to determine the effects of Reynolds number and frequency of oscillation on the damping-in-pitch derivatives of a 10-deg half-angle cone. Free oscillation data were obtained at a nominal Mach number of 20, at Reynolds numbers, based on model base diameter, from 50,000 to 100,000, and at model oscillation frequencies from 8 to 45 cps. Test results are presented, and comparisons are made with modified Newtonian impact theory and an unsteady flow field theory. (Author).

Book excerpt: A 1000-ft hypervelocity range was used to obtain the free-flight static and dynamic stability and drag data presented for a 10-deg semiangle cone. Measurements indicate that the damping-in-pitch derivatives for the cone increase appreciably with increasing Mach number between M = 8 and 16 at a Reynolds number (based on model length and free-stream conditions) of about 400,000. Further, the pitching-moment derivative for the cone decreases significantly as the nose-radius to base-radius ratio of the cone is increased up to 0.1 for amplitudes greater than about 5 deg. Comparisons of the range stability data with wind tunnel data (involving sting-supported models) obtained in different test facilities indicate that appreciable differences in the pitching-moment derivative and the damping-in-pitch derivatives exist in some cases. Book excerpt: Wind tunnel tests were conducted to provide support interference information for planning and directing wind tunnel tests at supersonic and hypersonic Mach numbers. Sting-length and sting-diameter effects on base and surface pressures of a blunt 6-deg cone with a sliced base were investigated at Mach numbers 2, 3, 5, and 8. Dynamic stability tests on a blunt 7-deg cone were also conducted at Mach numbers 2, 5, and 8. The objectives of the 7-deg cone tests were to define critical sting lengths as determined by the measurement of dynamic stability derivatives, static pitching moment, and base pressure. Two frequencies of oscillation were investigated, and data were obtained for laminar, transitional, and turbulent boundary-layer conditions at the model base. The data from the 6- and 7-deg cone tests showed that the critical sting length depended on the interference indicator, Mach number, angle of attack, state of the model boundary layer, and frequency of oscillation. The critical sting length was generally less for models with turbulent boundary layers than for those with laminar boundary layers. A critical sting length of 2.5 model diameters was determined to be suitable for all test conditions that produced a turbulent boundary layer at or ahead of the model base.

Book excerpt: Wind tunnel tests were conducted to provide sting-support interference information for planning and directing wind tunnel tests at subsonic and transonic Mach numbers. Sting-length effects on dynamic stability derivatives, static pitching moment, and base pressure of a blunt, flat-base 7- deg cone were investigated at Mach numbers 0.2 to 1.3 in the Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC) Propulsion Wind Tunnel Facility (PWT). Two frequencies of oscillation, nominally 5.3 and 2.9 Hz, were investigated. The boundary-layer state at the model base was turbulent for all Mach numbers greater than 0.2. The interference effects of two types of model-wake splitter plates were also investigated. The results showed that the critical sting length depended on the Mach number, angle of attack, and type of data used as the interference indicator. A critical sting length of three model diameters was determined to be suitable for all test conditions for the ratio of sting-diameter-to-model-base- diameter (0.22) for this test.

Book excerpt: The report presents a summary of the important results obtained on a combined analytical and experimental program for investigation of the hypersonic dynamic stability of re-entry vehicles. An unsteady flow field solution is described which predicts the static and dynamic stability characteristics for vehicles which are executing small amplitude oscillations about zero angle of attack. Solutions were obtained for sharp and blunted, axisymmetric and two-dimensional shapes in real gas equilibrium flow. The experimental program was conducted in AEDC tunnel 'C' at Mach 10 and in the Ling-Temco-Vought Hot Shot tunnel at Mach 14 and 20 to obtain dynamic stability characteristics of a 10 degree cone. Data are presented to show the effect of bluntness ratio, reduced frequency, center of gravity location, Reynolds number and Mach number. Comparisons are made with various theoretical results and limited correlations are shown which establish significant trends.

Book excerpt: Wind tunnel tests were conducted at Mach number 10 on a 9-deg half-angle cone model using a unique dynamic stability balance having three angular degrees of freedom. Data obtained at Re = 1,970,000 on models having different types of compound asymmetries revealed vast differences in the developed motion. A model with a center-of-gravity offset and a small, out-of-plane nose slice as the second asymmetry was found to have a totally unexpected type of instability. The instability was the rapid divergence of the precession arm caused by a Magnus-type moment resulting from an out-of-plane force generated by the nose slice. When the slice was removed (sharp nose model) and the second asymmetry applied by uing a small tab at the base, the classical roll resonance was found. (Author).
