Book excerpt: An infinitely long cylindrical shell of nominal radius R0 (the target) is surrounded by a cylinder of a bilinear material of radius RL much greater than R0. The material behaves bilinearly in bulk but linearly in shear. The shell is treated as a linear oscillator of mass n per unit area and frequency omega. At a time t = 0, the outer surface of the material at RL is suddenly loaded by an axisymmetric pressure which decreases with time. The shock is followed to the target and the reflected shock is followed back to the outer surface RL. Interest is centered on the response of the target, so that the computation is stopped at the time that the reflected wave reaches RL. A pseudo - characteristic method is used for the computation. The results presented permit the independent checking of results from finite difference or finite element codes for the case of axisymmetric wave propagation. (Author).

The solution is obtained from a characteristic approach. This is a two-dimensional development of previous work which was axi-symmetric in nature. Comparisons of this solution with results from a finite-element computer code using the same two-dimensional configuration are given. The comparisons are good. Computations are also presented for cases with and without slip between the medium and the shell.

Finally, a criterion is given which permits one to judge the order of agreement which is to be expected in other situations, for the case of an incoming wave. (Author).

Book excerpt: A numerical algorithm was developed for computing the nonlinear dynamic response of a ring-stiffened, nearly circular cylindrical shell of finite length under transient, axisymmetric radial loads of arbitrary axial distribution. Nonlinear Donnell-type equations were solved using Fourier series expansions of the dependent variables in the circumferential coordinate, modified finite difference approximations of the axial derivatives, and Newmark's beta-method, combined with Gauss elimination, for the time integration. The response of a simply supported shell under an exponentially decaying, uniform pressure was computed for peak pressures and total impulses between the static buckling limit and the dynamic buckling limit. The significance of damping, the initial imperfections, and the nonlinear coupling were also investigated. (Author).

Book excerpt: "Dynamic pulse buckling, vibration and failure of laminated, composite cylindrical shells subjected to blast loading were studied. The dynamic response of the shells with orthotropic, symmetric, anti-symmetric and quasi-isotropic layups subjected to both uniform and asymmetric pressure pulse loading (side-on explosion) were examined by use of Fourier series and Lagrange's equation of motion. The solutions for the radial shell deformations were represented by Mathieu differential equations. Dynamic stability of the shells was determined from a Mathieu stability diagram. It was found that the stability of the shells were affected by lay-up, aspect ratio as well as impulse distribution. The stable vibration response of the orthotropic cylindrical shell with side-on explosion compared well with finite element solutions using an implicit dynamic analysis in ABAQUS Standard. First-ply failure of the orthotropic composite cylindrical shell was predicted using a modified Hashin-Rotem failure criterion. It was observed that the thinner shell were more likely to fail by dynamic instability, whereas the thicker shells were more likely to fail by first-ply failure."--Abstract.
