Book excerpt: A numerical solution technique is presented for determining the dynamic response of a thin, elastic, circular, cylindrical shell of constant wall thickness and density, immersed in a potential fluid. The shell may be excited by an arbitrary radial forcing function with a specified time history and spatial distribution. In addition, a pressure history may be specified over a segment of the fluid outer boundary. Any of the natural shell end conditions may be prescribed. A numerical instability prevented direct solutions where the ratio of the hydrodynamic forces to shell inertial forces is greater than two. This instability is believed to be the result of the weak coupling between the equations describing the fluid to those describing the shell. To circumvent this instability, an effective mass was calculated and added to the shell. Comparison of numerical to experimental results are made using a 1/12 scale model of a nuclear reactor core support barrel. Natural frequencies and modes are determined for this model in air, water, and oil. The computed frequencies compare to experimental results to within 15%. The use of this numerical technique is illustrated by comparing it to an analytical solution for shell beam modes and an uncertainty in the analytical technique concerning the proper effective mass to use, is resolved.

This book was released on 1964 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dynamic response of a periodically simply supported, infinitely long, circular cylindrical shell to a pressure suddenly applied through the surrounding acoustic medium is investigated. The incident particle velocity is zero, and the pressure is assumed to have an harmonic spatial variation parallel to the shell axis. The exact solution is obtained by use of a Fourier integral transform, and the resulting inversion integral is evaluated by numerical and asymptotic integration. Two solutions to the same problem are obtained by using a plane and cylindrical wave approximation for the radiated field. The range of their applicability is investigated. For a steel shell in water, it is found that when the supports are placed three shell diameters apart, the use of the cylindrical wave approximation results in a 5% underestimation of the maximum deflection, while when the supports are placed one-sixth of a shell diameter apart the approximations are invalid. Download or read book Fluid-plasticity of Thin Cylindrical Shells written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dynamic plastic response of a thin cylindrical shell, immersed in a potential fluid initially at rest, subjected to internal pressure pulse of arbitrary shape and duration is considered. The shell is assumed to respond as a rigid-perfectly plastic material while the fluid is taken as inviscid and incompressible. The fluid back-pressure is incorporated into the equation of motion of the shell as an added mass term. Since arbitrary pulses can be reduced to equivalent rectangular pulses, the equation of motion is solved only for a rectangular pulse. The influence of the fluid in reducing the final plastic deformation is demonstrated by a numerical example.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various methods of solution for the dynamic response of infinitely long, circular, cylindrical shells submerged in an infinite acoustic medium are discussed. Two new approximations for transient response are introduced, along with a criterion for testing the validity of some approximate solutions for other than very short times. One new approximation is based on the natural frequencies of the shell-fluid system, while the other introduces an approximation for the dependence of the fluid on the axial coordinate. This dependence has been neglected in previous investigations. Results based on new approximations are compared with those previously published. (Author).

This book was released on 1980 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transient response of an elastic cylindrical shell immersed in an acoustic medium that is engulfed by a plane wave is determined numerically. The method applies the USA-STAGS code which utilizes the finite element method for the structural analysis and the Doubly Asymptotic Approximation (DAA) for the fluid-structure interaction. The calculations are compared to an exact analysis for two separate loadings: a plane step wave and an exponentially decaying plane wave. The results of the comparisons are within six percent of the exact solution; a fact that supports the applicability of USA-STAGS for fluid- structure interaction problems.

This book was released on 1974 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Governing equations for an infinitely long, periodically supported, cylindrical shell containing a fluid and submerged in an unbounded region of another fluid are solved directly by means of Fourier harmonic expansions. Steady state, harmonic excitation for the fluid-structure system is provided along a cylindrical boundary of the internal fluid. An expression for the power radiated into the external fluid by the membrane is derived. A long wavelength approximation for radiated power is made which conditionally validates the solution for finite length shells. (Author).
