Book excerpt: The generation of mixed-frequency fields by interaction of a longitudinal space-charge wave, carried by an electron stream through a plasma, and an electromagnetic wave - or a gyro-wave is studied. The direction of propagation of the interacting waves, of different frequencies, is assumed to coincide with that of a static magnetic field. It is demonstrated that the generated difference-frequency field may propagate as an electron gyro-wave or possibly as an ion gyro-wave or even hydromagnetic wave, if the difference-frequency is sufficiently small and the effect of collisions negligible. The investigation is limited to the case of an infinitely extended homogeneous medium. (Author).

A complete second order nonlinear magneto-ionic theory has been developed and is presented with all relevant field, velocity, differential space charge density and polarization expressions. For ionospheric application this theory is adequate under most conditions. Even for the most powerful radio transmitters on the ground, do the second order non-linear relations hold. This is not so in technical plasma devices. However, the second order nonlinear theory should be very useful as a tool in studying the further build-up of non-linearities in such devices, since it contains all important non-linear resonances. The general theory, involving arbitrary wave normals, will be dealt with in a forthcoming eport. It is shown that, as expected, travel ling wave resonances occur in the magneto-ionic medium, not only between waves of the same kind (e.g. between waves of ordinary polarization) but equally frequently between waves of opposite kinds. From the non-linear interaction point of view there, thus, is not much difference, at least in principle, between the ordinary and extraordinary waves. One also finds, which is of interest in this connection, that the second order non-linear waves are characterized by two different kinds of polarization which become equal only at travelling wave resonance. Rydbeck. The various reflection and refraction laws for the mixed frequency components, and the radiation for the same is discussed in the report. It is also shown that one can make use of non-linear resonance effects to echo sound the ionosphere at mixed frequencies (in the 25 Mc/s range) to obtain the true height of reflection (at the difference frequency) and the electron density gradient. Pulse powers of the order of 5 MW would have to be used for the purpose. (Author).
