Book excerpt: The investigation presented in this report shows that non-linear interaction between two transverse waves, propagating along a magnetic field in an electron stream which interpenetrates an ionized gas, can cause differentfrequency longitudinal space charge wave. Under certain conditions on the primary waves the degree of coupling may become appreciable. (Author).

Wilhelmsson and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The generation of mixed-frequency fields by interaction of a longitudinal space-charge wave, carried by an electron stream through a plasma, and an electromagnetic wave - or a gyro-wave is studied. The direction of propagation of the interacting waves, of different frequencies, is assumed to coincide with that of a static magnetic field. It is demonstrated that the generated difference-frequency field may propagate as an electron gyro-wave or possibly as an ion gyro-wave or even hydromagnetic wave, if the difference-frequency is sufficiently small and the effect of collisions negligible. The investigation is limited to the case of an infinitely extended homogeneous medium. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The text presented here is an extended english version of a report by the authors which appeared in April 1983 at the Institute of Cosmical Research of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR in German. It covers several selected topics on nonlinear wave-plasma interactio,ll in a treatment based on a hydrodynamic plasma description. Thus, no attempt has been made to give a comprehensive view on all aspects of the interaction of strong electromagnetic waves with plasmas. The text is partly introductory and presents partly current results. The authors hope that it will be of interest to students and scientists not only in the field of plasma physics. The authors thank Akademie-Verlag, Berlin and Birkhiiuser-Verlag, Basel for their encouragement to prepare the English manuscript and Mrs. Ch. Geier for carefully typing the final off-set version. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review is presented of the current literature pertaining to high power rf field-plasma interactions. In the survey, the class of nonlinear interactions is restricted to the case where the effective dielectric constant of the plasma is a function of the local electric field intensity. Since the propagation characteristics of an em wave depend upon the effective dielectric constant, the presence of an intense rf field can modify the propagation characteristics of an em wave. The assumptions and basic theoretical approach of each author are discussed and the most significant results are summarized. The approaches used by different authors are compared. A critique is made of the various appraches and their advantages and limitations are pointed out. (Author).

Book excerpt: The purpose of the present report is to demonstrate that two interacting strong waves which propagate perpendicular to the direction of a static magnetic field in an ionized gas can generate, as nonlinear products, difference-frequency fields, which may be hgdromagnetic waves or exhibit so-called hybrid resonances. In our investigation it is considered an infinitely extended homogeneous medium and the effect of collisions is neglected. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking work, Youngping Pao presents an original theory of nonlinear wave propagation in plasma. He explains how longitudinal waves, which are ubiquitous in plasma physics, can undergo nonlinear evolution and become solitons - self-reinforcing waves that maintain their shape and intensity as they propagate. Pao's theory has important implications for a wide range of fields, from astrophysics to fusion research. His clear and concise writing style makes the book accessible to students and researchers alike. It is an indispensable resource for anyone interested in plasma physics or nonlinear dynamics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expressions for the components of a nonlinear ac conductivity tensor have been derived - corresponding to a temperate, weakly ionized, lossy magnetoplsma. The electrical conductivity tensor is nonlinear because its components are functions of the isotropic part of the electron velocity distribution function f, where f depends upon the amplitude and polarization of the local rf field By diagonalizing the conductivity tensor and referring Maxwell's field equations to the principal co-ordinate directions, it is shown that an elliptically polarized em wave normally incident upon an inhomogeneous magnetoplasma slab will launch only a right-hand and left-hand wave into the plasma if both the dc magnetic field and the electron density gradients are perpendicular to the interfaces. The net reflection transmission coefficients for left-hand and right-hand modes are computed using a Runge-Kutta numerical integration procedure. For low power levels, the right-hand and left-hand waves propagate independently of one another. For high field intensities, the propagation of the right-hand mode depends upon the amplitude of the left-hand mode, and vice versa. Reflection and transmission coefficients are presented as a function of normalized plasma parameters. (Author).
