Book excerpt: Experiments were conducted on ASTM A572 50 and A992 steel over a range of intermediate strain rates in order to determine material strength properties of structural members subjected to dynamic loadings. The yield and ultimate tensile stress (UTS) of the steels were determined at increasing strain rates using a hydraulic apparatus and compared to static values obtained from ASTM E8 standardized tensile experiments. Results revealed that A572-50 steel exhibited an increase in yield stress of up to 35% and UTS of up to 20% as strain rate increased from 0.002 to 2.0 s-1. A992 steel demonstrated a similar increase in yield stress of up to 45% and UTS of up to 20%. Ratios of dynamic-to-static strengths were used to develop dynamic increase factor curves spanning the range of strain rates studied. These curves provide designers with material property values required for accurate and economical design of protective structures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of the literature has been conducted to obtain and compile existing experimental data on the pertinent mechanical properties of steels subject to dynamic loading conditions and under a wide temperature range. Data showing the variation of yield strength and elongation with strain rate and temperature are categorized and tabulated. The effect of the dynamic properties of steels due to strain rate variation at room temperature is shown graphically. Separate curves for steels in tension and compression are presented. A comprehensive reference and bibliography section is provided. The behavior of steels under dynamic loading is generally different from that under static loading. The yield strength is higher under dynamic loading, and it decreases with increasing temperature. (Modified author abstract).

Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive presentation of the fundamental aspects of analysis and design of steel structures. It is primarily meant for the undergraduate students of civil engineering and postgraduate students of structural engineering. It will also be immensely useful for structural engineers engaged in design, consultancy and construction involving steel structures. The important theoretical and practical concepts which need to be assimilated prior to undertaking analysis and design—general principles and practices, functional aspects of structures, basic design concepts, alternative arrangements of equipment and service, clarity of structural behaviour, and calculations of loadings on structures—are covered in the first two chapters. The ensuing chapters provide stepwise presentation of the analysis and design procedures for various steel structures and structural elements/members on the basis of Eurocodes and British (BS) codes of practice. The three types of structures specifically covered, on the basis of functional aspects, are scrap yard structures, conveyor structural systems, and turbo-generator buildings. In the Second Edition, analysis and design of steel structures have been carried out based on Indian Standard code of practice IS 800:2007. Every component of the structure comprising the beams and columns is designed in compliance with the code IS 800:2007. A comparison has been made between the results of the steel structures analysed and designed in compliance with EC3: Part 1-1 and those obtained in accordance with Indian Standard code of practice IS 800:2007. The book discusses the various structural analyses and design calculations in an exhaustive manner. The text is illustrated with an abundant number of visuals. Important sources of information relevant to steel structures can be found in the references at the end of various chapters. Audience Undergraduate students of civil engineering and postgraduate students of structural engineering.

Book excerpt: Tension test results are presented including stress-strain curves obtained in the temperature range of 25 to 927/sup 0/C (75 to 1700/sup 0/F) from specimens of SA 516 (Grade 55) steel, a low carbon pressure vessel steel recommended for cell liners in liquid metal fast nuclear reactors. The tensile properties and stress-strain curves at very high temperatures are required in the analysis and design and in the post-accident integrity analysis of the cell-liners. The values of properties such as yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, reduction in area and total elongation are presented at various test temperatures. Functional relationships between the above properties and test temperature are also presented. In the wide range of temperatures and strain rates at which the tests were performed it was found that the material exhibits dynamic strain aging at temperatures up to about 315/sup 0/C resulting in increased tensile strength and uniform elongation with impaired reduction in area and total elongation. At temperatures above 315/sup 0/C the material gradually loses tensile strength. The strain rate effects on tensile properties are significant and become pronounced at elevated temperatures.

Inputs have been obtained from the titanium industry, fabricators, users, government and academia. This up-to-date package covers information from almost the inception of the titanium industry, in the 1950s, to mid-1992. The information, organized by alloy, makes this exhaustive collection an easy-to-use data base at your fingertips, which generally includes all the product forms for each alloy. The 60-plus data sheets supply not only extensive graphical and tabular information on properties, but the datasheets also describe or illustrate important factors which would aid in the selection of the proper alloy or heat treatment. The datasheets are further supplemented with back-ground information on the metallurgy and fabrication characteristics of titanium alloys. An especially extensive coverage of properties, processing and metallurgy is provided in the datasheet for the workhorse of the titanium industry, Ti-6Al-4V. This compendium includes the newest alloys made public. even those still under development. In many cases, key references are included for further information on a given subject. Comprehensive datasheets provide extensive information on: Applications, Specifications, Corrosion, Mechanical Design Properties, Fatigue and Fracture

Book excerpt: For all practical purposes, the useful life of a plastic component is equal to its fatigue life under conditions of cyclic loading such as those that occur in vibration. Equally important to materials engineers and designers are abrasion, friction and wearùtribological properties. Over 80 generic families are covered including thermoplastics, thermosets, thermoplastic elastomers and rubbers. Neat resins, blends and alloys, plastics with various combinations of fillers, additives and more are covered. Also covers plastics mated to plastics and metals.
