Book excerpt: The effect of nuclear reactor radiation on the performance of a solid film lubricant was studied. The film consisted of molybdenum disulfide and graphite in a sodium silicate binder. Radiation levels of fast neutrons (E or = 1 MeV) were fluxed up to 3.5 times 10 to the 12th power n/sq cm-sec (intensity) and fluences up to 2 times 10 to the 18th power n/sq cm (total exposure). Coating wear lives were much shorter and friction coefficients higher in a high flux region of the reactor than in a low flux region. The amount of total exposure did not affect lubrication behavior as severely as the radiation intensity during sliding.

This book was released on 1966 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear reactor irradiation and laboratory testing were performed on four solid-film lubricants suitable for use in aerospace systems: Vitrolube, MLF-5, Almasol SFD-810, and Surf-Kote M-1284. With the exception of Surf-Kote M-1284, all the lubricants were applied by the developing agencies. Several test temperatures were investigated for each lubricant, and in some instances a lubricant was evaluated on two different substrates. Data obtained in this experiment and the statistical treatment employed (Weibull plots and ranking of data) lead to the conclusion that static exposure to reactor radiation might possibly have had a significant effect on the wear life of the Vitrolube and MLF-5 coatings at 600 F on substrates of M-10 steel and Rene 41, respectively. No significant effects were detected at the other test temperatures or with the other substrate materials employed with these two lubricants. Test results on Almasol SFD-810 were inconclusive as far as determining its radiation resistance; however, the lubricant displayed excellent wear life at 1200 and 1500 F. Wear life of Surf-Kote M-1284 was unaffected by the radiation exposure. Wear life of all the lubricants decreased as test temperature was increased.

Book excerpt: In the 1970s and the early 1980s there was an enormous volume of research and development into the subject of molybdenum disulphide lubrication, much of which was supported by national governments for the benefit of defence, aviation or space activities. There were already some well-established practical guidelines for deciding when and how to use molybdenum disulphide, but there was still a considerable lack of universally-accepted theoretical understanding of some of the important and fundamental aspects of molybdenum disulphide technology. However, the state of knowledge was growing rapidly. In the past fifteen years the situation with regard to the technology of molybdenum disulphide lubrication has stabilised in many respects, and a measure of consensus has been reached about some of the mechanisms involved. The use of molybdenum disulphide has become routine in some industries, and there are many well-established and reputable commercial products available. Except in the high-technology field of physical deposition techniques, especially sputtering, the output of new research publications has fallen from perhaps two hundred a year in the 1970s to fewer than ten a year in the 1990s. In spite of this maturing of the subject, it is clear that there are still many aspects in which disagreements persist about the mechanisms involved, and which as a result are unclear or misunderstood among current, and perhaps even more importantly, potential users. One of the primary objectives of this book is to analyse the various aspects of molybdenum disulphide lubrication technology about which there are still disagreements or controversy, and to attempt to come to firm conclusions about some of the mechanisms involved. In particular, it will place emphasis on the importance and effects of burnishing and film consolidation.

Book excerpt: Nuclear reactor irradiation and laboratory testing were performed on five high-temperature solid-film lubricants (Midwest Research Institute, PbS + MoS2 + B2O3; NASA Lewis Research Center, CaF2 coating, Navy Aeronautical Materials Laboratory, MoS2 + graphite + sodium silicate; Almasol Corporation, Almasol SFD-810; and General Dynamics/Fort Worth, Dynalube). The specimens were exposed to an average gamma dose of 2.2 x 10 to 11th power ergs/gm(C) and associated neutrons of 5.2 x 10 to 16th power n/sq cm (E>2.9 Mev). The lubricants were applied by the developing agencies. Inconel-X was used as substrate material for all films; Timken standard test races were also used on the Midwest film. The Hohman A-6 wear tester was used for all wear-life measurements. Rub shoes were of Rex AAA; load, 110 lb per shoe; sliding speed, 128 ft/min; machine cutoff, automatic at mu = 0.4. Several test temperatures were investigated for each lubricant. Weibull plots and a ranking method were employed for data analysis. Reactor radiation had no significant effect on the wear life of the PbS + MoS2 + B2O3 or the CaF2 lubricants. However, detectable decreases in wear life were noted at 80F for Dynalube and at 900F for Almasol SFD-810. The wear life of MoS2 + graphite + sodium silicate suffered a decrease at 80F but improved at 600F and 1200F. (Author).

Book excerpt: Three solid-film lubricant formulations - PbS + MoS2 + B2O3, GD/FW dynalube, and Almasol SFD-560 - were exposed to reactor radiation and tested for wear-life on a Hohman A-6 wear tester. Rub shoes were of Rex AAA steel, load per shoe was 110 lb, and sliding speed was 128 ft/min. Substrate materials were T-1 tool steel for GD/FW Dynalube and Timken standard test races (T-54148-3-233) for the other two lubricants. Several test temperatures up to 1150F were employed. The solid-film lubricant specimens received an average radiation exposure of 1.7 x 10 to the 11th power ergs/ gm(C) of gammas and 3.7 x 10 to the 16th power n/sq cm (E>2.9 Mev) of neutrons. Significant decreases in wear life occurred at 80 and 900F for Dynalube and at 900F for SFD-560; PbS + MoS2 + B2O3 showed no change; and SFD-560 improved markedly at 80F.
