Book excerpt: We present values of the static and dynamic fracture-initiation toughnessat different loading rates of the aluminum alloy Al 7075-T651 obtained onthree-point bend specimens with different thicknesses and initial crack lengths. In static conditions, the critical stress intensity factor was measured accordingto well known procedures. The methodology of dynamic fracture initiation toughness is not yet standardized, and the dynamic tests were done with a modified Hopkinson pressure bar coupled to high-speed cameras to measure the crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD) of the specimens. The critical stress intensity value was obtained from the CMOD at the time that crack starts to grow. This instant was detected by means of crack gauges at the crack tip.

One of the 1-1/2-inch thick plates was in the T7351 condition and one was in the T651 condition. The tensile properties of the T651 plate were higher than those of the T7351 plate. Nearly all of the fracture toughness tests were invalid by ASTM test standards; those that were valid indicate the material possesses good toughness. The conditional toughness values (K sub Q) for identical test conditions indicate the T7351 processing possesses the superior toughness property. The smooth and notched fatigue properties were about equal to those of other 7000-series aluminum alloys. Constant amplitude fatigue crack growth resistance was better than some older 7000-series alloys and similar to other new 7000-series alloys while the stress corrosion cracking properties in a salt water environment were excellent. Most of the tests were repeated using specimens that had been subjected to 250 F (121 C) for 1000 hours. This time- temperature exposure resulted in: (1) a slight reduction in tensile strength, (2) a slight increase in conditional toughness (K sub Q) for the T651 plate and a small decrease in K sub Q for the T7351 heat treated plate, (3) a slight reduction in fatigue properties, and (4) negligible effect on the fatigue crack growth rate and corrosion properties.

Book excerpt: Dynamic fracture in solids has attracted much attention for over a century from engineers as well as physicists due both to its technological interest and to inherent scientific curiosity. Rapidly applied loads are encountered in a number of technical applications. In some cases such loads might be applied deliberately, as for example in problems of blasting, mining, and comminution or fragmentation; in other cases, such dynamic loads might arise from accidental conditions. Regardless of the origin of the rapid loading, it is necessary to understand the mechanisms and mechanics of fracture under dynamic loading conditions in order to design suitable procedures for assessing the susceptibility to fracture. Quite apart from its repercussions in the area of structural integrity, fundamental scientific curiosity has continued to play a large role in engendering interest in dynamic fracture problems In-depth coverage of the mechanics, experimental methods, practical applications Summary of material response of different materials Discussion of unresolved issues in dynamic fracture

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The plane-strain fracture toughness KIc represents the resistance of a material against crack initiation. The material toughness in the case of a run-arrest event involves a special "material property" called the crack arrest toughness KIa, which within certain limitations, is a measure of the ability of a material to arrest a fast running crack under linear elastic conditions. It has been indicated that KIa is a material property independent of specimen geometry, but this is not a universal belief. Whether or not KIa is a material property is still being debated. The objectives of this project were to measure the crack arrest fracture toughness of 7075-T6 aluminum alloy and to determine the effect of specimen size and thickness on KIa. The tests were performed in accordance with a proposed ASTM procedure developed for high-toughness and mediumstrength steels. Specimens that were used in this program exceeded the proposed minimum linear elastic size requirement of ferritic steel specimens by a factor of 4 between 2 and 10. KIa showed a slight dependence on test parameters such as stress intensity at crack initiation, specimen thickness, and crack jump lengths. However, KIa was not a strong function of the stress intensity at crack initiation K0. The mean value of KIa was an adequate representation of the crack arrest toughness value within the test matrix. The average KIa was only 10% lower than the average plane-strain fracture toughness KIc.

Book excerpt: Axial load fatigue life, fatigue-crack propagation, and fracture toughness experiments were conducted on sheet specimens made of 7075-T6 aluminum alloy. These experiments were conducted at pressures ranging from atmospheric to 5 x 10 to the minus 8th torr. Analysis of the results from the fatigue life experiments indicated that for a given stress level, lower air pressures produced longer fatigue lives. At a pressure of 5 x 10 to the minus 8th torr fatigue lives were 15 or more times as long as at atmospheric pressure. Analysis of the results from the fatigue crack propagation experiments indicated that for small stress intensity factor ranges the fatigue crack propagation rates were up to twice as high at atmospheric pressure as in vacuum. The fracture toughness of 7075-T6 was unaffected by the vacuum environment. Fractographic examination showed that specimens tested in both vacuum and air developed fatigue striations. Considerably more striations developed on specimens tested at atmospheric pressure, however.

Book excerpt: "Friction stir welding is an aluminum plate joining process that has been found to be more superior to that of fusion welding. The need for information on this process regarding its response to fracture is vital in understanding the working life of high strength aluminum alloy plate structures in the aerospace industry. The objective of this study is 1) to perform plane strain fracture toughness tests to understand how the friction stir welded material will resist crack growth both in the longitudinal (T-L) and transverse (L-T) planes, 2) to perform plane strain fracture toughness tests through the weak areas of the weld, and 3) to perform tests on fatigue crack growth rates through the weak areas of the welds"--Abstract, leaf iii.

Book excerpt: Instrumented impact testing has been used to measure the dynamic fracture-initiation toughness of some precipitation hardened aluminum alloys. The results of these tests have been calculated by the energy method GIc = ?/?A and by the K calibration formula. The difference in origin and interpretation between the initiation toughness GIc = ?/?A and specific fracture energy ?/A has been considered.

Book excerpt: Plane strain fracture toughness tests have been made at room temperature, -112, and -320 F on plates of six aluminum alloys and tempers: 2014-T651, 2024-T851, 6061-T651, 7075-T651, 7075-T7351, and 7079-T651. The data indicate that the plane strain fracture toughness, KIc, of each of the alloys at the subzero temperatures is as high as or higher than that at room temperature. At -320 F apparently valid values of KIc ranged from 4 (7075-T7351) to 23 percent (2014-T651 and 7075-T651 ) higher than at room temperature. An even larger difference was indicated for 6061-T651 (about 40 percent higher), but the specimens tested at -320 F were not thick enough to satisfy the requirements of ASTM Test E 399 - 70 T. For the alloys of most interest for cryogenic applications, 2014-T651 and 6061-T651, the critical crack sizes at cryogenic temperatures are indicated to be as large as or larger than those at room temperature when evaluated at either a fixed operating stress or a constant percentage of the yield strength.
