Book excerpt: Dynamic fracture initiation and propagation in 4340 steel was investigated experimentally using the optical method of reflected caustics combined with high speed photography. A new crack propagation testing configuration consisting of a three point bend specimen loaded in a drop weight tower was used. It was found that prior to crack initiation the stress intensity factor time record calculated using the dynamic tip load and a static formula disagrees with the actual stress intensity factor measured by caustics. During crack propagation, the crack tip velocity and stress intensity factor time records varied smoothly and repeatably allowing for a straightforward interpretation of the data. The experiments show that for the particular heat treatment of 4340 steel used, the dynamic fracture propagation toughness depends on crack tip velocity through a relation that is a material property. Keywords: Dynamic fracture initiation, Dynamic crack propagation, Caustics, 4340 steel, High-speed camera, Stress-intensity factor, and Three point bend specimen.

Book excerpt: A transient three dimensional full field analysis of a three point bend fracture specimen dynamically loaded into the fully yielded plastic state has been carried out. The specimen is rapidly loaded by means of a concentrated transverse force applied at midspan on the uncracked surface of the specimen. The material is ductile and fracture initiation occurs after substantial plastic deformation has developed in the uncracked ligament. Furthermore it is supposed that the crack tip conditions are such that the J integral may be adopted as a characterizing parameter. An expression is derived for the local energy flux appropriate to a three dimensional crack front. Based on this fundamental crack tip flux integral, a domain integral representation for J, suited for the finite element method is obtained. Using the domain integral, accurate pointwise/local values of J along a three dimensional crack front can be extracted from numerically determined field quantities. Transient loading, geometry and plastic deformation on the variation of J along the crack front are examined. The present study determines conditions under which the value of J at initiation may be inferred from quantities that are directly measurable in a dynamic fracture experiment. Earlier a transition time was introduced to provide a practical bound on the time range over which conditions of J dominance prevailed and the deep crack formula was applicable under transient loadings. The transition time concept is further examined. The full field solutions allow comment on the suitability of proposed surface locations for measurement of moment deep crack formula for J, Implications for fracture testing of tough materials at relatively high loading rates are discussed.

Book excerpt: A dynamic finite-element code was used to determine dynamic initiation fracture toughness, KId, in 25.4-mm-thick (1 in.) notched bend specimens of A533B steel and a 15.9-mm-thick (5/8 in.) dynamic tear specimen of 6061 aluminum alloy. These specimen types can reflect varying dynamic fracture response due to differences in test temperature, specimen geometry, and material as well as notch tip sharpness. Measured load-time histories were applied to the tup as modeled by finite elements, and the dynamic stress-intensity factor was computed by a calibrated crack opening displacement procedure. Dynamic stress-intensity factors were also computed by the ASTM Test for Plane-Strain Fracture Toughness of Metallic Materials (E 399-74) using a load based on local dynamic strain measurements and a static K calibration.

Book excerpt: A dynamic finite element code was used to determine dynamic initiation fracture toughness, K sub Id. in 25.4 mm (1 in.) thick notched bend specimens of A533 B steel and a 15.9 mm (5/8 in.) thick dynamic tear (DT) specimen of 6061 aluminum alloy. These specimen types can reflect varying dynamic fracture response due to differences in test temperature, specimen geometry and material as well as notch tip sharpness. Measured load-time histories were applied to the tup as modeled by finite elements and the dynamic stress intensity factor was computed by a calibrated COD procedure. Dynamic stress intensity factors were also computed by the ASTM E-399 procedure using a load based on local dynamic strain measurements and a static K-calibration. Reasonable agreements between measured and computed dynamic strains in the vicinity of the crack tip verified the accuracy of the dynamic finite element model. The attendant agreement between measured versus computed time-varying dynamic stress intensity factors also verified, for the first time, the applicability of the ASTM E-399 procedure for computing dynamic initiation fracture toughness, K sub Id on the basis of local dynamic strain measurements. Book excerpt: Testing and data analysis procedures developed from a recently completed fracture toughness testing program on ferritic nuclear pressure vessel steels are presented. These procedures describe the measurement of dynamic fracture toughness at stress intensification rates near 105 MPa?m/s using instrumented impact testing of three-point bend specimens. These procedures have been submitted to several ASTM task groups, and it is hoped that these guidelines will be incorporated into current and future interlaboratory activities eventually leading to a standard method for testing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of this study was to demonstrate the applicability of a J-based approach to fracture characterization of ductile alloys subjected to dynamic loading. Three-point-bend [SE(B)] fracture specimens of a high-strength steel were subjected to impact loading in a drop tower, and appropriate strains and displacements were measured to allow estimation of J. A finite element analysis of these experiments was conducted to evaluate the applicability of a J-based fracture characterization scheme and to provide guidance for the experimental measurements. The concept of a transition time was introduced to provide an estimate of the time during which the controlling crack-tip field [Hutchinson-Rice-Rosengren (HRR) field] stabilizes. The paper demonstrates that for fracture times greater than the transition time, J can be accurately evaluated by the quasi-static deep-crack formulation. For the case of the steel SE(B) specimen geometry used for this study, the transition time was approximately 300 s. The finite-element analysis indicated that the net moment carried by the remaining ligament of the specimen could be evaluated by measurements of the flexural and stresses at the quarter-span position on the SE(B) specimen. This was verified experimentally in drop tower experiments utilizing strain gages at the quarter-span position. These results were found to compare well with a load estimation scheme based on a full bridge of strain gages attached to the tension and compression surfaces of the SE(B) specimen. The load accuracy obtained using the full bridge was also found to be insensitive to crack extension and plasticity at the crack tip. Methods of determining the crack initiation point in these dynamic experiments were evaluated. It was found that the double capacitance crack-opening displacement (COD) gage used in the experiments provides an accurate estimate of the crack initiation point.

Book excerpt: An experimental investigation is undertaken to assess three-dimensional effects near a crack front in a ductile three-point bend specimen. The possibility of using the optical method of caustics for the measurement of the J integral in the presence of large scale yielding and three dimensional fields is also investigated. Experiments using the optical methods of caustics by reflection and Twyman-Green interferometry are performed simultaneously on either side of the test specimen. The load and load-point displacement are also measured. The experimental results are compared with very good agreement to the results of a finite element simulation of the experiment. The caustics experiments are used to obtain a calibration relation between the value of the J integral and the caustic diameter for load levels up to fracture initiation. It is proposed that such a calibration be used in dynamic fracture initiation experiments for the measurement of the time history of the dynamic J -integral. (mjm).

Book excerpt: Dynamic fracture in solids has attracted much attention for over a century from engineers as well as physicists due both to its technological interest and to inherent scientific curiosity. Rapidly applied loads are encountered in a number of technical applications. In some cases such loads might be applied deliberately, as for example in problems of blasting, mining, and comminution or fragmentation; in other cases, such dynamic loads might arise from accidental conditions. Regardless of the origin of the rapid loading, it is necessary to understand the mechanisms and mechanics of fracture under dynamic loading conditions in order to design suitable procedures for assessing the susceptibility to fracture. Quite apart from its repercussions in the area of structural integrity, fundamental scientific curiosity has continued to play a large role in engendering interest in dynamic fracture problems In-depth coverage of the mechanics, experimental methods, practical applications Summary of material response of different materials Discussion of unresolved issues in dynamic fracture

Book excerpt: The dynamic fracture toughness of the high-strength steel VCN-100 (UNI 38 NiCrMo4) is derived from tests on TPB 9 (three-point-bend) specimens. A wide range of crack velocities was obtained by changing the ER (energy ratio) of the specimen at crack instability; the crack velocity was evaluated from load versus time records during crack propagation. The results show a dependence of KID on crack velocity in good agreement with literature data.
