Book excerpt: Prucha and Nadiri (1982,1986,1988) introduced a methodology to estimate systems of dynamic factor demand that allows for considerable flexibility in both the choice of the functional form of the technology and the expectation formation process. This paper applies this methodology to estimate the production structure, and the demand for labor, materials, capital and R & D by the U.S. Bell System. The paper provides estimates for short-, intermediate- and long-run price and output elasticities of the inputs, as well as estimates on the rate of return on capital and R & D. The paper also discusses the issue of the measurement of technical change if the firm is in temporary rather than long-run equilibrium and the technology is not assumed to be linear homogeneous The paper provides estimates for input and output based technical change as well as for returns to scale. Furthermore, the paper gives a decomposition of the traditional measure of total factor productivity growth.

Book excerpt: Studies of the firm's demand for factor inputs often assume a constant rate of utilization of the inputs and ignore the fact that the firm can simultaneously choose the level and the rate of utilization of its inputs. In particular, the literature on dynamic factor demand models has, until recently, largely overlooked the issue of capital utilization and/or did not distinguish carefully between the distinct concepts of capital and capacity utilization. In this paper we allow for variations in the rate of capital utilization within the context of a dynamic factor demand model by adopting a modeling framework within which the firm combines its beginning-of-period stocks with other inputs to produce its outputs as well as its end-of-period stocks. We also derive measures of productivity and capacity utilization for the adopted modeling framework. Given the depreciation rate is endogenous a consistent capital stock series must be generated during estimation from the investment data. This yields, as a byproduct, a consistent decon1position of gross investment into replacement and expansion investment. As an illustration, the model is applied to U.S. Electrical Machinery data.

Book excerpt: In this paper we discuss recent advances in modeling and estimating dynamic factor demand models, and review the use of such models in analyzing the production structure, the determinants of variable and quasi-fixed factors, and productivity growth. The paper also discusses the traditional approach to productivity analysis based on the Divisia index number methodology. Both approaches may be seen as being complementary. The conventional index number approach will measure the rate of technical change correctly if certain assumptions about the underlying technology of the firm and output and input markets hold. The approach is appealing in that it can be easily implemented. However, if the underlying assumptions do not hold, then the conventional index number approach will, in general, yield biased estimates of technical change. The econometric approach based on general dynamic factor demand models allows for a careful testing of various features of a postulated model. Furthermore it not only provides a framework to estimate technical change, but can also yield a rich set of critical information on the structure of production, the dynamics of investment in physical and R&D capital, the effects of spillovers, the depreciation rate of capital, the impact of taxes, expectations, etc. The paper provides both a review of recent methodology developed for the specification and estimation of dynamic factor demand models, as well as a review of recent applications. The paper also explores in terms of a Monte Carlo study how estimates of important characteristics of the production process can be affected by model misspecification. The study suggests that characteristics of the production structure such as scale and technical change are sensitive to model misspecification, and that adopting a simple specification for reasons of convenience may result in serious biases

Book excerpt: This book investigates the impact of production input factors on the market, consumer and producer energy demand characteristics in 30 industrial sectors for South Korea over the period 1980–2009, and for Japan over the period 1973-2006, with special emphasis placed on the effects of ICT investment on the demand for energy. A dynamic factor demand model is developed, accounting for the adjustment costs that are defined in terms of forgone output from current production. It addresses four key aspects of production and energy demand in manufacturing: first, it establishes the various relationships between different factors of production. Second, it investigates whether the energy demand in the industrial sectors in South Korea would be decreased or increased by substituting/complementing with other input factors such as ICT capital and labor. Third, it looks at sources of growth in the industrial sectors through decomposing the Divisia index based total factor productivity (TFP). Finally it provides appropriate policy recommendations based on these findings. The results of this study may provide industrial sectors’ stakeholders and environmental and industrial policy makers with a flexible model that has the capacity to assess outcomes of various policies under certain scenarios. The factor demand methodology described in this book is very advanced and up-to-date. It can be used when teaching advanced graduate courses and in empirically advanced research. Therefore, it is highly relevant in both teaching as a main or supplementary text and in particular as a reference handbook in conducting empirical research. There have been many attempts by scholars from a wide range of disciplines to explain this remarkable history, but for economists interested in the quantitative analysis of economic growth and the principal question addressed is how Japan was able to grow so rapidly. The contributors focus their efforts on the accurate measurement and comparison of Japanese and U.S. economic growth. Assuming that any sustained increase in real GNP must be due either to an increase in the quantity of capital and labor used in production or to the more efficient use of these inputs, the authors analyze the individual contributions of various factors and their importance in the process of output growth.
