Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The underlying principles of dynamic fracture and crack arrest in fiber composites are reviewed in terms of the conservation of mechanical energy. An approximate Mode 1 dynamic crack extension force for a highly orthotropic 0 degree unidirectional fiber composite is derived. The governing partial differential equations for dynamic crack propagation in double cantilever beam unidirectional composite specimens are derived. A finite-difference scheme for solving these equations is presented along with the stability and convergence criteria for a numerical solution. A conductive grid system for measuring the crack-tip velocity profile is described. This system is capable of assisting in the measurement of the dynamic fracture toughness of fiber composites.
