Book excerpt: The Internet of Things (IoT) is a dynamic global information network consisting of Internet Connected Objects (ICOs), such as RFIDs, sensors, actuators, as well as other instruments and smart appliances that are becoming an integral component of the future Internet. In parallel, the sensing as a service model has emerged as a business solution that enables new business opportunities and adds additional value to IoT technologies. Currently, ICOs outnumber both people and computers connected to the Internet, and their population is expected to grow to 50 billion in the next 5 to 10 years. To be able to develop IoT applications, such ICOs must become dynamically integrated into emerging information networks supported by architecturally scalable and economically feasible Internet service delivery models, such as cloud computing. In this thesis, we proposed a number of novel approaches that enable non-technical users to dynamically configure sensing as a service platforms without knowing technical details. Our overall objective is to simplify the tasks that need to be done in the sensing as a service domain. Therefore, anyone with no technical background can successfully use these systems to achieve their own goals. Further, our solutions also accommodate technical experts to perform their tasks much faster with less effort. Firstly, we propose an approach called Context-aware Dynamic Discovery of Things (CADDOT) which facilitates efficient and effective sensor discovery and configuration. Then, we propose Mobile Sensor Data Processing Engine (MOSDEN), a plug-in based IoT middleware for mobile devices, that allows collecting, processing, fusing, and filtering sensor data without programming efforts. MOSDEN establishes the link between sensors and cloud IoT platforms. Together, CADDOT and MOSDEN allow non-technical users to connect sensors to cloud services easily and efficiently without requiring much technical expertise. Secondly, we propose the Context-aware Sensor Configuration Model (CASCOM) to addresses the challenge of automated context-aware configuration of filtering, fusion, and reasoning mechanisms in IoT middleware. In this cloud solution, non-technical sensor data consumers are allowed to define their requirements in an abstract way. CASCOM is capable of identifying the sensors and data processing components that need to be composed together in order to produce the desired outcome. As outcome, CASCOM produces data streams that can be fed into other applications/services easily where further analysis or visualization may occur. To support CASCOM, we propose the Context-aware Sensor Search, Selection and Ranking Model (CASSARAM) to address the challenge of efficiently selecting a subset of relevant sensors out of a large set of sensors with similar functionality and capabilities. It is evident that sensing as a service platforms require significant improvements in order to bring them to a level that non-technical personnel would be able to use them. This thesis demonstrates some of the solutions and future research directions.

We can see that the photos are assisting clinicians in detecting infection in patients even in the current COVID-19 pandemic condition. With the aid of ML/AI, medical imaging, such as lung X-rays for COVID-19 infection, is crucial in the early detection of many diseases. We also learned that in the COVID-19 scenario, both wired and wireless networking are improved for data transfer but have network congestion. An intriguing concept that has the ability to reduce spectrum congestion and continuously offer new network services is providing wireless network virtualization. The degree of virtualization and resource sharing varies between the paradigms. Each paradigm has both technical and non-technical issues that need to be handled before wireless virtualization becomes a common technology. For wireless network virtualization to be successful, these issues need careful design and evaluation. Future wireless network architecture must adhere to a number of Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. Virtualization has been extended to wireless networks as well as conventional ones. By enabling multi-tenancy and tailored services with a wider range of carrier frequencies, it improves efficiency and utilization. In the IoT environment, wireless users are heterogeneous, and the network state is dynamic, making network control problems extremely difficult to solve as dimensionality and computational complexity keep rising quickly. Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) has been developed by the use of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) as a potential approach to solve high-dimensional and continuous control issues effectively. Deep Reinforcement Learning techniques provide great potential in IoT, edge and SDN scenarios and are used in heterogeneous networks for IoT-based management on the QoS required by each Software Defined Network (SDN) service. While DRL has shown great potential to solve emerging problems in complex wireless network virtualization, there are still domain-specific challenges that require further study, including the design of adequate DNN architectures with 5G network optimization issues, resource discovery and allocation, developing intelligent mechanisms that allow the automated and dynamic management of the virtual communications established in the SDNs which is considered as research perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm gains popularity, the next few years will likely witness 'servitization' of domain sensing functionalities. In this setting, cloud-based eco-systems will exist in which high quality data from large numbers of independently-managed wireless sensor networks are shared or even traded in real-time. Such an eco-system will necessarily have multiple stakeholders such as sensor data providers, domain applications that utilize sensor data (data consumers), and cloud infrastructure providers who may collaborate as well as compete. Information systems that implement sensors as a service incorporate several major challenges. One such challenge is in the design, development, implementation and management of energy efficient dynamic green information systems. A second major challenge is to provide data streams with high data quality (DQ) to the consumer. A third challenge is to reduce the sensor energy usage and maintain energy efficiency of the sensors while providing dynamically adjustable smart sensors. A fourth challenge is to monitor and adjust the inherent tradeoff between the data quality of the data stream and the energy consumption of the sensor. A final challenge is in creating cloud services that handle the issues associated with the variety of mobile sensor devices including high volume flow, device tracking positioning and data control problems. Our work seeks to explore this tradeoff in detail by combining DQ services for the data stream consumer with customizable energy efficient "EE" throttling algorithms for the data feed producers. To address this issue, a multi-tiered cloud-service architecture called TAU-FIVE was designed and implemented. The technical contributions of this framework include data quality and energy efficiency models based on 7 DQ attributes implemented in a 5 tiered distributed system. This equilibrium is likely to impact energy awareness in the IoT as batch device data streams are integrated with the variety of social and professional networks in the Internet of Everything.

Book excerpt: Cognitive Hyperconnected Digital Transformation provides an overview of the current Internet of Things (IoT) landscape, ranging from research, innovation and development priorities to enabling technologies in a global context. It is intended as a standalone book in a series that covers the Internet of Things activities of the IERC-Internet of Things European Research Cluster, including both research and technological innovation, validation and deployment. The book builds on the ideas put forward by the European Research Cluster, the IoT European Platform Initiative (IoT-EPI) and the IoT European Large-Scale Pilots Programme, presenting global views and state-of-the-art results regarding the challenges facing IoT research, innovation, development and deployment in the next years. Hyperconnected environments integrating industrial/business/consumer IoT technologies and applications require new IoT open systems architectures integrated with network architecture (a knowledge-centric network for IoT), IoT system design and open, horizontal and interoperable platforms managing things that are digital, automated and connected and that function in real-time with remote access and control based on Internet-enabled tools. The IoT is bridging the physical world with the virtual world by combining augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) to support the physical-digital integrations in the Internet of mobile things based on sensors/actuators, communication, analytics technologies, cyber-physical systems, software, cognitive systems and IoT platforms with multiple functionalities. These IoT systems have the potential to understand, learn, predict, adapt and operate autonomously. They can change future behaviour, while the combination of extensive parallel processing power, advanced algorithms and data sets feed the cognitive algorithms that allow the IoT systems to develop new services and propose new solutions. IoT technologies are moving into the industrial space and enhancing traditional industrial platforms with solutions that break free of device-, operating system- and protocol-dependency. Secure edge computing solutions replace local networks, web services replace software, and devices with networked programmable logic controllers (NPLCs) based on Internet protocols replace devices that use proprietary protocols. Information captured by edge devices on the factory floor is secure and accessible from any location in real time, opening the communication gateway both vertically (connecting machines across the factory and enabling the instant availability of data to stakeholders within operational silos) and horizontally (with one framework for the entire supply chain, across departments, business units, global factory locations and other markets). End-to-end security and privacy solutions in IoT space require agile, context-aware and scalable components with mechanisms that are both fluid and adaptive. The convergence of IT (information technology) and OT (operational technology) makes security and privacy by default a new important element where security is addressed at the architecture level, across applications and domains, using multi-layered distributed security measures. Blockchain is transforming industry operating models by adding trust to untrusted environments, providing distributed security mechanisms and transparent access to the information in the chain. Digital technology platforms are evolving, with IoT platforms integrating complex information systems, customer experience, analytics and intelligence to enable new capabilities and business models for digital business.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops a crowdsourced sensor-cloud service composition framework taking into account spatio-temporal aspects. This book also unfolds new horizons to service-oriented computing towards the direction of crowdsourced sensor data based applications, in the broader context of Internet of Things (IoT). It is a massive challenge for the IoT research field how to effectively and efficiently capture, manage and deliver sensed data as user-desired services. The outcome of this research will contribute to solving this very important question, by designing a novel service framework and a set of unique service selection and composition frameworks. Delivering a novel service framework to manage crowdsourced sensor data provides high-level abstraction (i.e., sensor-cloud service) to model crowdsourced sensor data from functional and non-functional perspectives, seamlessly turning the raw data into “ready to go” services. A creative indexing model is developed to capture and manage the spatio-temporal dynamism of crowdsourced service providers. Delivering novel frameworks to compose crowdsourced sensor-cloud services is vital. These frameworks focuses on spatio-temporal composition of crowdsourced sensor-cloud services, which is a new territory for existing service oriented computing research. A creative failure-proof model is also designed to prevent composition failure caused by fluctuating QoS. Delivering an incentive model to drive the coverage of crowdsourced service providers is also vital. A new spatio-temporal incentive model targets changing coverage of the crowdsourced providers to achieve demanded coverage of crowdsourced sensor-cloud services within a region. The outcome of this research is expected to potentially create a sensor services crowdsourcing market and new commercial opportunities focusing on crowdsourced data based applications. The crowdsourced community based approach adds significant value to journey planning and map services thus creating a competitive edge for a technologically-minded companies incentivizing new start-ups, thus enabling higher market innovation. This book primarily targets researchers and practitioners, who conduct research work in service oriented computing, Internet of Things (IoT), smart city and spatio-temporal travel planning, as well as advanced-level students studying this field. Small and Medium Entrepreneurs, who invest in crowdsourced IoT services and journey planning infrastructures, will also want to purchase this book.
