Book excerpt: In the laser-induced cavitation (LIC) technique, a vapor-gas cavity is generated in water, or a soft material by focusing an intense laser pulse into the sample. The high-strain-rate mechanical properties of these samples can be investigated through a real-time size measurement of the expanding cavity bubble. Although this LIC technique has been applied to multiple research fields such as mechanical, biological and medical areas. It is possible to simplify and improve this LIC method by introducing optical-fibers. In this approach, we propose to employ an optical-fiber to deliver the intense laser pulse to an arbitrary position of an optical opaque specimen. At the same time, we also attempt to generate LIC at one end of the optical-fiber. This optical-fiber based LIC is achieved by dip-coating of the laser absorbing film on the fiber end. Thus, the film can absorb the laser pulse and generate LIC within the sample. In this study, the development of the coating material, the introduction of the optical-fiber into the existing LIC system, and the optical-fiber based LIC experiments are performed to characterize high-strain-rate mechanical properties of soft materials. We investigate the coating conditions and verify the consistency of the ablation based on the optimized coating materials. By conducting LIC experiments with gelatin samples, the feasibility of developed LIC method is investigated, LIC events are successfully formed at the fiber end which is inserted into the sample, and the rapid expanding dynamics are imaged with ultrafast stroboscopic microscopy. Using the multiple-exposure images, the expanding speeds and maximum cavity sizes are quantified to provide high-strain-rate characteristics of the soft materials. The inconsistency of the cavitation behavior resulted by the fluctuation of the coating condition and the high power intense laser conducting optical-fiber destruction can be improved by developing new coating method and new protective coating on the fiber end in the future.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Cavitation is often the result of rapid and intense hyperthermia using high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) to treat malignant tumors deep in tissue. With proper parameters, cavitation bubbles are very efficient in transforming acoustic energy into heat. In vivo and in vitro studies have shown that bubble enhanced heating can potentially increase HIFU efficacy. However, sporadic nucleation of bubbles and subsequent nonlinear oscillations allow uncontrolled cavitation to induce irregular lesions and other unpredictable and thus undesirable effects. This work takes a modeling approach to investigate the physical mechanisms necessary for developing bubble-mediated HIFU therapy with a satisfactory degree of predictability and controllability. Controlled nucleation is possible with a transient vapor cavity generated from a laser heated gold nano-particle in combination with proper acoustic conditions. Preliminary experimental studies in optically transparent gel phantoms have been conducted and results show that the combined use of laser, HIFU and nano-particles reduces the cavitation threshold significantly, and the temporal and spatial characteristics of cavitation events can be controlled by the sound-light interaction mediated with the particles. A mathematical model for particle heating, vapor bubble nucleation and the subsequent bubble dynamics is constructed to predict cavitation thresholds of laser and HIFU energy, and results are comparable with experiments. A parametric study is presented to investigate the effects of particle size and laser pulse length for the optimization of this technique to generate cavitation on demand. In another effort, the interactions of acoustic propagation and the thermal effects in the presence of cavitation bubbles (mostly gas) and boiling bubbles (mostly vapor) are modeled. By introducing temperature dependent viscosity, surface tension coefficient and vapor pressure into the nonlinear gas bubble dynamics, the variation of the bubble radial oscillations, size distributions and subsidiary heating due to the temperature elevation are studied. A continuum bubbly medium is constructed with effective sound speed and attenuation derived from the temperature dependent nonlinear gas bubble When boiling occurs, the vapor bubbles are simply modeled as pressure release cavities. An iterative simulation for acoustic, cavitation(boiling) and thermal fields is then constructed to model the lesion developments, with updating time scales estimated from intrinsic space-time scales related to the evolution of bubble clusters observed from experiments. Results indicate that cavitation enhances ultrasonic absorption and creates larger and wider lesions in a shorter time. The scattering due to the impedance mismatch in the cavitation zone is responsible for the irregular lesions. The heating from cavitation bubbles also accelerates the emerging of vapor bubbles and boiling. The current scheme has exhibited its effectiveness in predicting the position, shape and size of an evolving lesion during bubble-mediated HIFU therapy, given the thermal and acoustical properties of the target tissue and the ultrasonic insonation parameters such as focal intensity and exposure duration.

However, when the bubble collapses above a blank solid boundary, a f ast liquid micro-jet is formed owing to the asymmetry of the surrounding flow fi eld. The jet starts by penetrating the upper bubble wall, impacts the lower side of the bubble and then continues its path towards the wall, leading to a deform ation in the bubble. This fast micro-jet seems to be responsible for cavitation erosion and damage in hydro-machinery. In this work, we are motivated by the fas t liquid micro-jet formation from laser-induced cavitation bubbles and the poten tial for cultivating this jet for a variety of applications such as micro surger y of soft tissue. If a hole is intentionally drilled in the solid boundary under neath the collapsing bubble, it is hypothesized that the jet might pass through and be cultivated on the other side of the hole. Bubbles will be generated in an infinite medium, as well as above blank and drilled solid boundaries. Investiga tions will be focused on the dynamics of the bubble and jet, as a function of th eir distance to the wall for the case of blank solid boundary, and as function o f the hole diameter once a hole is present in the wall.
