Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do organisms become extremely abundant one year and then seem to disappear a few years later? Why do population outbreaks in particular species happen more or less regularly in certain locations, but only irregularly (or never at all) in other locations? Complex population dynamics have fascinated biologists for decades. By bringing together mathematical models, statistical analyses, and field experiments, this book offers a comprehensive new synthesis of the theory of population oscillations. Peter Turchin first reviews the conceptual tools that ecologists use to investigate population oscillations, introducing population modeling and the statistical analysis of time series data. He then provides an in-depth discussion of several case studies--including the larch budmoth, southern pine beetle, red grouse, voles and lemmings, snowshoe hare, and ungulates--to develop a new analysis of the mechanisms that drive population oscillations in nature. Through such work, the author argues, ecologists can develop general laws of population dynamics that will help turn ecology into a truly quantitative and predictive science. Complex Population Dynamics integrates theoretical and empirical studies into a major new synthesis of current knowledge about population dynamics. It is also a pioneering work that sets the course for ecology's future as a predictive science.

This book was released on 1982 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A banding program for mourning doves (Zenaida macroura) was conducted by the 14 Central Management Unit (CMU) States and the U.S. FIsh and Wildlife Service during 1967-74. Banding and recovery records, as well as data from annual call-count and harvest surveys, were subsequently analyzed by a subcommittee of the Central Migratory Shore and Upland Game Bird Technical Committee. This paper presents information on mourning dove habitat, hunting regulations, and harvest in the CMU; distribution and derviation of band recoveries in and from CMU; distribution of mourning dove harvest in Mexico and Central America; chronology of migration; survival and recovery rates; effects of hunting on CMU mourning dove populations; and indirect nationwide mourning dove population estimates.

Book excerpt: An authoritative, accessible, and gorgeously illustrated exploration into the lives of these remarkable animals Lions are the only social cat. They hunt together, raise cubs together, and defend territories together against neighbors and strangers. Lions also rest atop their ecological pyramid, with profound impacts on competitors and prey alike, but their future is far from assured. Craig Packer interweaves his discoveries from more than forty years of research—including a substantial body of new findings—to provide an unforgettable portrait of the African lion. He shares insights into the intricacies of lion life from birth until death and describes efforts to conserve lions in an increasingly crowded continent. With a wealth of breathtaking photographs by Daniel Rosengren, The Lion sheds light on a host of intriguing scientific questions, such as why males have manes, why lions are social, how sociality limits and stabilizes lion populations, how close inbreeding affects lion health, why lions become man-eaters, how lions and people can best be protected from each other, and how to ensure the lion’s survival into the next century. Engagingly written by the world’s foremost expert on African lions Integrates a wealth of findings from two of the most comprehensive field studies on any animal Features hundreds of stunning photographs that capture a broad range of lion behaviors, ecological interactions, and conservation challenges Blends vivid field anecdotes and graphics to give the reader a sense of adventuring into the lion’s world

Book excerpt: Analysis and Management of Animal Populations deals with the processes involved in making informed decisions about the management of animal populations. It covers the modeling of population responses to management actions, the estimation of quantities needed in the modeling effort, and the application of these estimates and models to the development of sound management decisions. The book synthesizes and integrates in a single volume the methods associated with these themes, as they apply to ecological assessment and conservation of animal populations. - Integrates population modeling, parameter estimation and decision-theoretic approaches to management in a single, cohesive framework - Provides authoritative, state-of-the-art descriptions of quantitative approaches to modeling, estimation and decision-making - Emphasizes the role of mathematical modeling in the conduct of science and management - Utilizes a unifying biological context, consistent mathematical notation, and numerous biological examples

Book excerpt: Consciously or not, wildlife managers generally act from a theoretical basis, although they may not be fully versed in the details or ramifications of that theory. In practice, the predictions of the practitioners sometimes prove more accurate than those of the theoreticians. Practitioners and theoreticians need to work together, but this proves di
