Book Synopsis Efficient Nonlinear Transient Dynamic Analysis for Structural Optimization Using an Exact Integral Equation Formulation by : Joshua H. Gordis
Download or read book Efficient Nonlinear Transient Dynamic Analysis for Structural Optimization Using an Exact Integral Equation Formulation written by Joshua H. Gordis and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report serves to document progress made to date on the National Science Foundation Project #97-13481, Earthquake Hazard Mitigation Program. The focus of this phase of the project is the development of an improved solution algorithm for fast transient analysis of large, locally nonlinear structures using time domain structural synthesis. The report documents the development of several algorithms intended to improve upon the original algorithm developed by the first author. The last algorithm developed meets the stated goals of the project. This algorithm is a newly developed recursive, block by block convolution solution to the governing nonlinear integral equation. As is demonstrated with a realistically large nonlinear base excitation problem (51, 300 DOF finite element model), the new algorithm provides a 78% reduction in time required for the nonlinear transient base excitation solution, as compared with traditional direct integration. The new algorithm provides an even greater reduction in computer time for subsequent analysis. The nonlinear base isolation solutions calculated using the new algorithm take approximately 7 seconds, as compared with the direct integration solution which takes approximately 30 minutes. The rapid reanalysis capability will facilitate the development of numerical optimization for the design of nonlinear isolation. The theory of transient synthesis is documented, along with a new proof of the exponential convergence properties of an iterative solution to the governing nonlinear integral equation.

Book Synopsis Design of Seismic Isolated Structures by : Farzad Naeim
Download or read book Design of Seismic Isolated Structures written by Farzad Naeim and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1999-03-25 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. (04/99)
Book Synopsis Earthquake-Resistant Design with Rubber by : James M. Kelly
Download or read book Earthquake-Resistant Design with Rubber written by James M. Kelly and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Base isolation technology offers a cost-effective and reliable strategy for mitigating seismic damage to structures. The effectiveness of this new technology has been demonstrated not only in laboratory research, but also in the actual response of base-isolated buildings during earthquakes. Increasingly, new and existing buildings in earthquake-prone regions throughout the world are making use of this innovative strategy. In this expanded and updated edition, the design methods and guidelines associated with seismic isolation are detailed. The main focus of the book is on isolation systems that use a damped natural rubber. Topics covered include coupled lateral-torsional response, the behavior of multilayer bearings under compression and bending, and the buckling behavior of elastomeric bearings. Also featured is a section covering the recent changes in building code requirements.

Book Synopsis Geotechnical Reconnaissance of the Effects of the January 17, 1995, Hyogoken-Nanbu Earthquake, Japan by : Koichi Akai
Download or read book Geotechnical Reconnaissance of the Effects of the January 17, 1995, Hyogoken-Nanbu Earthquake, Japan written by Koichi Akai and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1997 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jan. 17, 1995, Hyogoken-Nanbu Earthquake was one of the worst disasters to hit Japan in almost half a century. It has been compared in its impact to the great Kanto (Tokyo) Earthquake of 1923. The Kobe-Osaka region held many similarities in its geologic and tectonic setting to many areas along the West Coast, and possibly, other areas of the U.S. A geotechnical reconnaissance to identify the relevant problems and issues was organized. This report provides a timely, first-hand overview of the type and extent of the geotechnical aspects of the damage.

Download or read book Executive Summary On: Phase 3: Evaluation and Retrofitting of Multilevel and Multiple-column Structures written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes the principal findings of a four year study for Caltrans of the seismic response of older multi-level, multi-column reinforced concrete bridge structures. Methods have been devised to improve prediction of the global response of these structures, to analyze and assess their local behavior, and to retrofit them to achieve adequate seismic behavior. The behavior of these structures has been found to be complex and influenced by a wide variety of parameters. Moreover, existing analysis methods often provide non-conservative estimates of behavior. The investigations conducted provide greater insight into the response characteristics of existing multiple column bridge structures. These have permitted development of improved analytical models and tools, retrofit strategies and design concepts.
