Book excerpt: Abstract: According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA Highway Statistics, 2004), almost $900 billion was spent on the maintenance and reconstruction of the U.S. highway system during the ten year period from 1995 to 2004. It is clear that improving the pavement analysis and design methods could result in annual savings in the millions and possibly billions of dollars. The response models based on multi-layer elastic theory and displacement-based finite element methods are currently the most widely used and both are adopted as the structural response models in the recently released Mechanistic Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG). These models are capable of predicting global responses such as surface deflections but are not able to accurately predict the transverse stress distribution which is imperative to model the realistic behavior of in-service pavement systems and prevent premature failure caused by pavement layer debonding. A stress-based model developed at Ohio State for composite laminates has shown the capability of accurately predicting the dynamic stresses at layer boundaries while retaining the ability to determine displacement behavior. In this study, the stress-based multi-layer plate theory was extended to layered pavement systems as an alternative to existing pavement response models for the analysis and design of pavements. The proposed model was verified by comparing its solutions to existing analytical, numerical solutions, and experimental results. Good agreement was obtained in the predicted surface deflection response from existing analytical, numerical solutions and the stress-based model. It was shown that the current stress-based model can overcome the limitation of displacement-based method and predicted more accurate and realistic transverse stress at the pavement layer interfaces. Overall, a reasonably close prediction was obtained between calculated and measured responses from the two full-scale pavement experimental studies. Moreover, a sensitivity study was carried out in order to obtain a better understanding of the different factors that affect the interface transverse stresses at the interface between surface layer and base layer. Finally, the stress-based model was used to analyze thin concrete overlay rehabilitation of rigid and flexible pavements.

Book excerpt: A full-scale accelerated pavement test on unbonded concrete overlays was conducted in 2006 to 2009, sponsored by the IPRF (Innovative Pavement Research Foundation), and performed at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) National Airfield Pavement Test Facility (NAPTF). Extensive strain gage data was collected by embedded strain gages both in the overlay and the underlay, due to tridem dual and tandem dual axle loads in a controlled distribution of wander paths. It provided new data and information, which has been used in this work to develop a concrete overlay pavement model in a manner that was not done before. A semi-analytical model was conducted in this thesis to simulate dynamic behavior, specifically designed for airfield concrete overlay pavements, with consideration of multi-axle moving loads. Within the concrete overlay pavement model, interface condition is important to define. The interface conditions, from fully bonded to fully unbonded conditions, have a significant influence on dynamic responses of the pavement system, especially for the overlay and the underlay, and may also affect the corresponding performance and serviceability of pavement. . By using Ks, the shear reaction modulus, the interlayer could be seen virtually with its function remaining such that its shear stress could be obtained by multiplying Ks by relative displacement between overlay and underlay. All the bonding conditions could be described by relative displacement; when there is no relative displacement, the shear stress between the overlay and the underlay is also zero, which represents the unbonded condition. The fully bonded condition and partially bonded condition have similar mechanism. Characterization of load is another important factor affecting dynamic responses, so the loads were simulated as uniform constant pressure and harmonic load, respectively. In addition, the viscosity property of pavement layers below the underlay was considered in the model. Governing equations were compiled for overlay and underlay from equilibrium relations. To get an analytical solution, Fourier Transform was performed. The closed-form of Inverse Fourier Transform seldom works out for complex kernel functions. Alternatively, one of the numerical methods, self-adaptive numerical integration algorithm, was tried and successfully worked for the final result, and reached agreement with examples in the literature. Then the model was verified with embedded strain gage data, after parameter study of Ks, harmonic load frequency and viscosity, and strain calculated by the model showed characteristics of strain history very clearly. The analytical model is effective and with good performance, which is much faster than numerical modeling. However, the particular analytical model in this thesis can only fit for a pavement system whose geometric shape is infinite plates. The fundamental approach is always appropriate; other constitutive models could be considered for further study, such as elasticity solutions under circular loaded area, rectangular loaded area, or strip loaded area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is concerned with analytical and numerical procedures applied to multi-layered concrete pavement systems. In the first part of this Thesis, analytical solutions for interior and edge loading are presented. The Burmister analytical solution for interior loading of a multi-layered system is expanded to the more general case of systems in which each component may be treated as a Burmister layer, or as an elastic spring bed, or as a plate. This study is useful for comparison of different models of pavement systems. The proposed procedure is implemented in the FORTRAN code DIPLOMAT. An edge loading solution for two semi-infinite plates resting on a general, multi-component linear elastic foundation is also obtained. The solution is implemented in the FORTRAN code DIPLOMAT-E. Several particular cases are considered in detail. The second part of this Thesis focuses on finite element models for concrete pavement systems. Finite element formulations for higher order subgrade soil models are developed. The corporation of the subgrade models by Vlasov-Pasternak, by Kerr and by Zhemochkin-Sinitsyn-Shtaerman into a new version of the computer program ILLI-SLAB, code-named ILSL2, is described. A comparative study of these foundation models has been conducted. The effect of the size of the loaded area on the applicability of the conventional dense liquid model has been investigated. A formulation for finite element analysis of the Totsky model is also developed and incorporated into ILSL2. Thus, ILSL2 is capable of analyzing the effect of separation between and compressibility of constructed layers in a multi-layered concrete pavement system. A general formulation for the analysis of the effect of nonlinear temperature (or moisture) differentials on the stresses and deflections in concrete pavement systems is presented. The concept of "Equivalent Temperature Distributions" is explored for a multi-layered systems. It is anticipated that the results of this study will contribute toward the improvement of current mechanistic-based design procedures. Findings may be implemented in future "unified" or "limit state" design procedures. This study will also enhance current methods used in interpreting nondestructive testing deflection measurements from in situ multi-layered PCC pavements.
